AHEPA District Governor’s MessageTo all members of our AHEPA family.

I was honoured to be elected your District Governor at last years District Convention, hosted by the San Francisco Chapter. Other than a few logistic problems the Golden Gate-Pacific Chapter #150 did a great Job.

As your District Governor I attended every Chapter Visitation with at least one other Officer, also

our Executive Secretary Brother Bill Booras was in atten-dance. I was able to attend the morning session of the Fall Conference, hosted by the San Jose Chapter. I would like to thank our Lt. Gov., Nick Pries, for chairing the afternoon ses-sion. All of the events hosted by our Chapters are done very well. The Spring Convention was hosted by the Sacramento Chapter #151 also did a great job. The attendance at both Conferences was quite good, As always we would like to see more Brother attend are District events. I would urge every Chapter Officer and member to make every attempt to attend.

A very positive aspect for our District is that our mem-bership has increased this past year.

For that I thank everyone who sponsored a new member. We all realize that without new members, and ideas, our beloved Order cannot survive.

Many Chapters send me their monthly bulletins, which I am great full. The projects that many Chapters participate in is very commendable. The March 25th parades, the flag raising at many City Halls and the State Capital which show-cases our Hellenic heritage. Many Chapters perform worthy projects for our Church’s, from rebuilding a kitchen area by the Oakland Chapter #171 at Ascension Cathedral to support for students at Holy Cross Seminary by the Modesto Chapter. The rebates from our Charitable Raffle have to be used for outside charitable purpose, and I am glad that edit is being followed.

In closing I would once again thank all of your hospita-bly, and great food at all of the visitations. Let all of us put our best foot forward to make District #21 one of the best in the AHEPA world.

Our District Convention is coming up, hosted by the Fresno Chapter. Let all of use make every effort to attend and support the Fresno Chapters.

I would like to thank my District Lodge for their support and help in the last Ahepa year. v

Fraternally, Steve Miller DG.

Stephen MillerDistrict Governor

AHEPA District Governor’s MessageI hope that everyone had a wonder-

ful Easter Holiday. Christos Anesti. I cannot believe that May is just around the corner and we are winding down another year. As this business year is coming to a close, it is time to evalu-ate our year and celebrate our success-es. Congratulations to each of you on your efforts for the betterment of the Daughters of Penelope.

Where do we go from here? It is time to evaluate, look back at the goals that your respective chapters have set. Make sure to take the time to celebrate the goals you have achieved. But most importantly examine the goals that you did not meet. Take time to analyze whey these goals were not attained. Was the goal given the attention and effort; is the goal still impor-tant to the chapter. Now it is time to formulate new goals making sure they are specific, attainable, realistic and timely.

As the year winds down remember to thank the dedicated and talented sisters of your chapter’s board. These women serve each year out of their love and dedication to the Daughters of Penelope and your chapter. Take time to say “thank you” for their time and efforts.

The Sacramento AHEPA Family hosted a well attended and informative Spring Conference in Elk Grove. The Annual Sisterhood Tri District Conference hosted by District 21 was very well attended with 61 Sisters from Arizona, Utah, Southern California, Washington & Oregon attending. Grand President Karen Stamatiades, Grand Vice President Barbara Stavis Wolf, Grand Governor & District Liaison Lois Kotzambasis and Grand Advisor to the Maids of Athena Joanne Saltas were in attendance to observe the reactivation of the Oakland Maids of Athena Eleni Chapter: Grand President Karen Stamatiades administered the oath to initiates.

The Fresno AHEPA Family has been working diligently for many months in preparation of the 2008 District Convention May 30 – June 1, 2008 headquartered at the Radisson Hotel, 324 E. Shaw Avenue in Fresno. All business meetings and the Grand Banquet on Friday May 30 will be at the Radisson; Greek Glendi Nite with music by Fotia and the Charitable Raffle will be held at St. George Church, 2219 N. Orchard Avenue.

Remember the number of paid membership and per capita that was submitted to National Headquarters on or before December 2007 will determine the number of delegates and alternates that each chapter may have at the 2008 Supreme Convention in Athens.

Please remember it is never too late to remember your loved ones or a special friend with a monetary gift to the District Scholarship Fund through our Memorials and Tributes. Simply send your remembrance directly to Chairman Chrisanthy Panagopoulos, District Marshal, 1406 Woodcreek Way, Stockton, CA 95209. v

Oakland Celebrates GreekIndependence Day

Oakland members of AHEPA and Daughters of Penelope celebrated Greek Independence Day at Oakland’s City Hall.

Richard Cowan, Chief of Staff to Councilman Jean Quan, addressed an audience of Greek Americans. Members of the Order of AHEPA and Daughters of Penelope were accompanied by Reverend Thomas J. Paris of the Greek Orthodox Ascension Cathedral at the event which took place at the City Hall on Tuesday, March 25, 2008.

Mr. Robert Cowan presented a proclamation to Chairman Dr. Karl Konstantin (Dr. Konstantin, who has been the chairman for more than thirty years). Mayor Ron Dellums proclaimed March 25, 2008 as Greek American Day in the City of Oakland and encouraged its recognition by all its citizens.

Preparing for the program in observance of the “Celebration of Greek Independence Day” with Dr.

Konstantin and friends.Aliki Siskos, Administrative Officer

from the office of the Honorable Xenia Stefanidou Consul General of Greece

delivered her message on occasion of the National Day Celebration.

Refreshments were served follow-ing the ceremony and were prepared by Mrs. Karl Konstantin.

Annual Greek Independence DayRun/Walk

The Ascension Historical Society presented and sponsored their 14th Annual Greek Independence Day on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the new Boat House on Lake Merritt, Oakland.

More than 350 members and friends attended the celebration by walking or running and enjoying the Greek delicious delicacies. Crowning wreaths and medals were presented to the lucky winners.

Among the guests were honor-

ary Chairman Reverend Thomas J. Paris and George Zuras. Chairpersons

for the event were Dean and Paula Gassoumis.

Among the Daughters of Penelope Chapter #4 serving at the buffet table included Despina Kallas, Sophia Paris, Cleo Lekas and Teddi Carvounis. Pictured above.

Daughters Receive $6,430 Check

Daughters of Penelope received a check in the amount of $6,430 from the Leo Jensing Fund. The same amount was presented to Tula Sostchen, chair-man of the Friends In Deed from Sister Debbie Hand.

Debbie Hand, from Castro Valley, a new member of the Daughters of Penelope, is employed at Rudolph & Sletten, Inc. Yearly, Rudolph & Sletten, Inc. solicits donations from its employ-ees for the Leo Jensing Fund (started to honor estimator working for Rudolph & Sletten who is now deceased). The company encourages 100% participa-tion from its employees and match-es their donations, which in turn are distributed to selected local charitable organizations that contribute back to the community. One of the company’s goal is to reward their employees for the time they donate to charitable orga-nizations. Just two years of member-ship with the Daughters of Penelope was enough to convince Debbie of the many various great acts of charity work this wonderful group of women do. She was so impressed and touched by the way what the Chapter does to help oth-ers. Debbie submitted the Daughters
