Golden Acres purchases Syngenta sorghum line

The growing season has arrived once again. Everywhere I look I see green stalks stretching for the sky or golden tassels spinning out across broad fields. Things are ripening. And it’s more than just crops that are busy growing around here.

We just announced an agreement with Syngenta that will grow our sorghum product offering. Through a wider selection of top-notch sorghum products we’ll begin branching out into new territory. We’re also gaining access to some products that are already tried and true favorites right here in our own backyard. The newly enhanced sorghum lineup is just one more way of providing Southern farmers with custom seed solutions.

We’re also excited to be one of the first independent companies to introduce RIB Complete (or Refuge In the Bag). This unique product offers a game-changing level of convenience and profitability to growers in select areas across the South. If you’re one of the lucky ones eligible to take advantage of this opportunity, believe me, you do not want to miss out! ♦

Golden Acres Genetics, Ltd. and Syngenta Seeds, Inc. announced an agreement on June 3, 2011 that will result in the purchase by Golden Acres of Syngenta’s remaining portfolio of sorghum products. This purchase includes grain sorghum, forage sorghum and sorghum sudan hybrids currently marketed by Syngenta’s Garst®, Golden Harvest®, and NK® brands.

The acquisition “means we’ll take ownership of these products and continue to make them available to growers across the U.S.,” said Lou Buice, President of Golden Acres. “This expansion of our sorghum portfolio will allow us to offer a broader line of high performing hybrids to growers – not only across our Southern market area, but everywhere sorghum is grown.”

“We’re pleased that Golden Acres is acquiring Syngenta’s sorghum portfolio and will continue to provide farmers with high-quality hybrid sorghum seed,” said Steve Sick, Syngenta sorghum product manager. “We believe Golden Acres Genetics has proven their ability to provide high-quality products and service for this important market segment.”

“Golden Acres is excited to add these proven Syngenta sorghum products to our offering for 2012,” said Lou Buice, president, Golden Acres Genetics, Ltd. “These hybrids will further help us in our mission to professionally serve farmers with custom seed solutions.”

Golden Acres will continue testing Syngenta sorghum products in 2011 across the market area, in order to provide data to support 2012 sales efforts. ♦

Sorghum Expansion Q & AQ. Why is Golden Acres purchasing Syngenta’s sorghum seed business?

A. In pursuit of our mission to professionally serve Southern farmers with custom seed solutions that cultivate independence and success, Golden Acres constantly seeks new products with proven Southern performance. The additional sorghum hybrids from Syngenta’s lineup will round out the current Golden Acres product offer, providing new products to current customers and allowing Golden Acres to expand into new markets.

Q. Why is Syngenta selling their sorghum business to Golden Acres?

A. Syngenta has made the decision to exit the sorghum business and focus on other core crops and technology platforms. Golden Acres Genetics, Ltd., headquartered in Waco, TX, is an independent seed company focused on serving the southern market. Sorghum is a key product in their business. They have been in the sorghum business since 1952 and have a solid reputation with southern growers.

Q. What is the agreement with Syngenta Seeds, Inc.?

A. Golden Acres Genetics, Ltd. will acquire all existing inventory of Syngenta sorghum seed products, including all forage and grain sorghum hybrids and sudangrass products. (continued, page 3)

IN THE CORN GROWING REGIONS

Farmers in select areas across the South are about to experience the simplicity, convenience, and refuge compliance benefits of the industry’s first, single-bag refuge solution for corn. Genuity® SmartStax® RIB Complete™ (Refuge In the Bag) received registration from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on April 11, 2011 and Golden Acres will be one of the first independent seed companies to bring this step-change in technology to Southern farmers. Approvals for Genuity® VT Double PRO® RIB Complete™ are expected soon.

Golden Acres Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete is a single bag solution containing 95% SmartStax corn seed and 5% refuge (non-Bt) seed that farmers can plant across their entire field; providing a convenient way to maximize protected acres. For growers who purchase Genuity SmartStax without the RIB Complete option, the structured refuge is still required.

Golden Acres will introduce two RIB Complete products for the 2012 season: 24T62 (SmartStax) and G1518 (Double PRO). Both product are 111 day hybrids with proven Southern adaptation and exceptional performance in those “corn-growing areas” where RIB Complete currently has EPA approval. Approved areas include parts of the Texas panhandle, most of Oklahoma and Tennessee, and all of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Kansas.

RIB Complete is not yet approved in other “cotton-growing areas” across the South. Instead, farmers can choose from six different Golden Acres Genuity® VT Triple PRO® products for maximum insect protection with reduced refuge requirements.

You can find more information about RIB Complete and other Golden Acres products at www.GAseed.com. ♦
