July is always a vacation month for Jill and I. The last 2 years we have been gone a couple weeks to Wing Ding and then a short trip to visit family in Chicago. Since we are not seen at chapter events for several weeks, it must give the impression to many members that we have abandoned the chapter during this time! Not so of course! If you recall, we still got the newsletter out on July 1

st. I think this was while we were

staying in Savannah, or maybe Charlotte! We also try and keep in touch with the weekly updates. But we did miss all of you as much as you missed us! Things will be on track to be back to normal for us in August even though Jill’s summer vacation will be ending soon!

Wing Ding was fun even though we were only there for 2 nights and one day. It was great to visit all the great vendors and see what is available. It was also nice to see several Chapter U folks there! We managed to catch up with Bill & Jane Johnson and Duke and Chela Thompson for supper one evening, and then caught up with Sal & Phylis Pest for lunch. Somehow between the Trailering and two-up ERC courses, Ken & Connie Jordan managed to elude us! We did talk to them on the phone a couple times!! We attended several seminars at Wing Ding that were very informative in a number of ways! One was on recruiting and retention where we gained new ideas on how to “get and keep” folks in GWRRA. Next was a general membership enhancement forum. The new Membership Enhancement Directors (MED) hosted it and lots of great ideas, comments and concerns were brought up. I think they have a better idea now where we stand anyway! Lastly was an open forum with the GWRRA Executive Director, Melissa Eason. She entertained comments and questions from the floor. Not a lot of earth shattering news came out, but it was fun to see her up close!

Our trip planning this year was a bit flawed. Somehow in our concern for the planning of the Horizons training, we managed to book our trip to Chicago the week of the monthly meeting! Oops, yep, we goofed! But thanks to Olin & Martha Gover, all worked out fine. Olin covered for us in our time of need and did a great job to boot! Thanks to Olin for a job well done and all of you for supporting him!

26-27 July the chapter hosted Horizons Seminar. This may not seem like a big thing but relatively few classes are conducted every year and San Antonio has not had one in at least 4 years!! Twelve of your fellow members gave up their weekend to learn a bit more about leadership and working with volunteers. Take a peek at the pictures on the website and their comments elsewhere in this newsletter and you will see they had FUN.

There have been times that we’ve all ridden in groups where several bikes didn’t have CB radios. For some groups of riders this may be a problem; however, not Chapter U! That’s because we use hand signals on a regular basis.

This article is designed to remind us of just some of the signals used when group riding or with those we don’t normally ride with. Most common hand signals are below.

The illustration on the left shows the distances we need to maintain with riding in staggered file, and single file. This is not the distance we should maintain when following four-wheel (or larger) vehicles. And last, but not least is the “I need a break” sign, which can be used for drink, food, or restroom break. Or if you simply need to take a break, like when riding on a bike other than a Gold Wing.

These signals, along with others that may be used, should be reviewed prior to every group ride and especially for those without CB radios.

Remember, if there’s a co-rider they can give the signals; especially when there’s a hazard to the right. Happy Riding! And always keep the sunny side up, and two on the road.

WingWingWingWing D D D Dinginginging ANDANDANDAND Then Then Then Then S S S Somomomomeeee Thank goodness for Charlie Brown. He had worked with us in his PLP’s for a 2-up session in the past and were we glad for that bit of practice. We signed up for the ERC 2-up and the 2-upTrailering courses at Wing Ding. In the ERC-2 up, the instructors had us turning the bike every which way but loose. We practiced turning and cornering, weaves and swerves, normal and quick stops on a straight and curved course. Over and over, the instructors impressed the importance of looking past our turns (turning our heads)—BOTH the rider and the co-rider. As our day went on, it was obvious how much this helped Kenny control the bike in turns. On our trip following Wing Ding, this practice was extremely beneficial with our many “J” turns (instructor terminology for Texas U-turns). The 2- up Trailering Course the next day, had many of the same maneuvers, but backing up and parking with the trailer were included. Much discussion was held regarding the handling of the bike with a trailer attached which involves extra weight and length. In both courses, how the balance and extra weight of a co-rider affects driving was an important topic, as well as the “atmosphere” between rider and co-rider. Having the co-rider as an extra set of eyes is always a big plus when riding. We know that everyone feels they are a “good” rider and/or co-rider, but you would be surprised at the helpful information picked up during these courses. Your confidence, comfort and awareness levels are raised a few notches. A small fee was charged for the training with most of it refunded after completion of the classes. If you ride 2-up and ever have the opportunity to take one or both of these courses, we would encourage you to do so. You never know when something may jump out at you to test your skills. From Wing Ding, we continued our extended vacation through the eastern part of the U.S. with Maine and then Niagara Falls as our ultimate destinations. Traveling mostly smaller back roads, we saw some fantastic scenery with nothing out of the ordinary occurring. After seeing the Falls, we headed home through more states we had never visited. We had 26 states and 5,300 plus miles under our belts. Then we were back in Texas and what a welcome we received! Just north of Marshall, TX, we were meeting another vehicle when a deer suddenly ran in front of that vehicle and straight into us, hitting Kenny’s ankle and foot on the left side of the bike, falling under the back tire and then was run over by our trailer. Kenny was able to keep the bike upright and stopped. This was some scary experience, but we truly feel that the courses we took at Wing Ding helped tremendously with this situation—that and the grace of God. As is discussed at our meetings, you never know what kind of surprises you may encounter on a ride. We would like to thank everyone for the phone calls and cards we received about our mishap after getting home. This is what friends do. Looking forward to the next ride. Safe riding, everyone Ken and Connie Jordan

GWRRA Members to the Rescue A very important detail about our deer mishap while on vacation was intentionally left out of our write-up – To Wing Ding and Then Some. We want the spotlight to shine on 2 very special people—Lloyd and Bonnie Curry, past CD’s for Chapter I in Marshall, TX. After the deer hit us, we limped on to H & W Honda in Marshall. Connie rushed inside to see that the bike was fixed, at least enough to get us home. In explaining what had happened and asking for the repairs, she also asked if someone could get Kenny to the hospital. We thought his foot/ankle was broken. Out of the blue, this gentleman interrupted her and offered to take us. He went outside to talk with Kenny, helped us get the trailer and bike secured and he and his wife took us to the emergency room. They sat in the waiting room with Connie where information about each other was bantered around, helping Connie keep her cool. They took the time to locate a rental car for us and made sure we would be all right, even though they were supposed to be at a meeting that evening. A great big thank you was sent to the Currys on our return home. It’s wonderful to experience for sure that GWRRA people will help whenever and wherever they can. We’ve asked the Currys to contact us if ever they are in the Schertz or San Antonio area. I’m sure we’ll meet again and you can be sure we will give them another hug and another big thank you. Kenny & Connie Jordan

What a weekend, what do I say except congratulations! Congratulations Chapter U, Brad and Jill for a very successful Horizons program. And we can’t forget Dave, thank you for such a great facility. It is always a thrill to see participants go from; “what did I get into” to ownership and team work. Take this newly gained information and use it both on a personal level and to grow your Chapter. Your final presentations were great; I laughed so hard my sides hurt, you have raised the bar. I was totally unprepared for the “Harley Chapter” meeting; I can safely say that was a first. As always it was great working with Ron, Magaly and John and it was an honor that I could accomplish my goal of Senior Instructor with you. Thank you.

Lynn Heene, Instructor Leadership Training

“We didn't know what to expect when we signed up for the Horizons training but we are very glad to have gone thru the training. The thing that we remember the most about the training, is that you must not confront someone who is having an issue during the meeting but talk to them and let them know you want to hear their concerns and would be willing to meet with them one on one after the meeting. We also learned how to control "rabbit holes" during a meeting. We were very pleased and surprised by the meeting demonstrations. We didn't realize that we had such talented individuals. We also learned the difference between a manager and a leader. We would like to know where the Severe Tattoo Parlor is located? This was a very informative meeting and the trainers did an awesome job. We had been told for a long time about Horizons and we are very happy to finally be able to take this training class.” Steve and Susan Ochs

“I had the opportunity to attend the Horizons course offered by the GWRRA this weekend and once again was extremely impressed and amazed by the GWRRA organization. From the very moment of arriving to the closing ceremonies it was non-stop entertainment and education. My original expectations were to learn more about the GWRRA organization and how it operates within a non-profit volunteer status. What I gained was a deeper knowledge of my personality and an understanding of how to interact with other types of personalities. This was a seminar that presented a ton of information but in such an entertaining way that it did not feel boring or mundane. My original thought that they are only here to teach me to be an officer/staff member within a chapter was quickly diffused when they explained that the intent was to show techniques for a successful gathering. I did learn about leadership and team building but it was presented from a member’s point of view. I am no where ready for a staff position but I do have a deeper understanding of what the staff sacrifices to provide the wonderful activities that I participate in. The techniques I learned do not apply to just chapter life but daily activities outside the GWRRA as well. Even though the seminar was completely free, I did have to sacrifice my weekend but I feel that it was definitely worth the investment and the camaraderie was hilarious. In my unique situation I attend 5 chapter meetings without even attending my first official one yet :-) Since this is getting long I will close with one thought, if you have not attended one of these training sessions before I would recommend it even if you are not interested in an officer/staff position. It will give you the opportunity to become a more productive member of society or at the very least provide you a deeper compassion for what your current leaders do for us.” Cooper “J” Smyth

“What can I say? This weekend was a hoot. We gathered with old friends, made new friends and just all around had a good time. Horizons is structured to teach us to be leaders, vice managers; to have fun and enjoy ourselves while working as a team, and to build on our common goal within the chapter...........Fun for the members. I won't lie to you, there is some work involved and a little public speaking, but it was in a positive environment filled with good nature and camaraderie. We all had a great time. Ron, John, and Lynn, our instructors were very knowledgeable and kept us entertained and involved throughout the seminar. Through their encouragement, we all succeeded in growing in our roles within the chapter. I highly recommend Horizons if you're interested in improving your and your chapter's Fun Factor.” Mike Mills

To say I was little bit apprehensive about the recent Horizons training would be an accurate statement. I get that way when ever I am involved in a "Training" class. I found the information to be very relevant not only for GWRRA but that it could be applied in many aspects of life. It was a low threat and fun environment where you could let lose a little or a lot in some cases. Without a doubt the meeting skits were the most enjoyable part. Seeing how people (including me) responded outside of their comfort zone was a sight to see. It just doesn’t seem to matter what we do, when we do it together, we are just gonna have fun!

Dave Weaver

As everyone knows, Chapter U hosted the GWRRA Horizons Training Program this past weekend. Twenty participants, Brad and Jill, and 4 instructors attended. The main purpose of the training was to help individuals develop basic team building skills. After all, a single chapter is really one team, but often smaller teams break out to accomplish various goals. In my view, a prime example would be the committees for our upcoming rally. True, we are all volunteers, but within these committees or teams, it is helpful if someone steps up to see that things are getting done without “stepping on toes”. Another example of a team might be the Road Captain and Drag person who take charge of our rides. These individuals probably have leadership skills they are not aware of and are already using them. These skills were the topic of discussion this weekend. The seminar helped attendees understand the many details involved in being a team leader. Granted, the program was structured with hopes to prepare and encourage more individuals to volunteer as officers and staff members, but leading a team doesn’t only pertain to these levels. Before the program began, attendees were asked to complete a self-assessment form which helped shed light on an individual’s personality. I discovered, among other things, that I am an “introvert”. Kenny is an “extrovert”. Who’da thunk it! I guess I don’t know us as well as I thought I did. The program included discussions on having effective meetings, communication skills and techniques, leadership concepts, and the officer-couple partnership. Duties of and requirements for being an officer (which for GWRRA includes only the CD, ACD and Educator—for those of us who didn’t know) or staff member were explained thoroughly. One module contained discussion about the basics of being a good leader—someone who will have the full support of his team. I found that these basics which involve such things as good communication, actively listening, not prejudging the content or intent of a conversation carry over to life in general and I will try to practice them on a daily basis. The 20 attendees were divided into teams of 4 who worked together in different situations. Throughout the seminar, trivia contests were held and each team worked collectively to answer questions. The questions ranged from history to items in a purse/wallet to GWRRA. You would be surprised how many simple things you don’t know. Points were awarded to the team who may have answered correctly. On closing day, these teams were responsible for holding a “mock” 10 minute chapter, staff or district meeting—their choice-- using the information and pointers the instructors had passed on to us for doing so. We had 5 teams going 5 different ways in their presentations and what a hoot! You really had to have been there to understand how funny and creative these teams were. Many individuals were totally out of their comfort zone but participate, they did. When you saw how silly and ridiculous everyone else was, your only thought was to go with the flow to support your team. This seminar was absolutely not a waste of my time. There were some up and some down times, but overall, I found the information very interesting and useful. There is no commitment required before or after attending, just that you come expecting to meet different people, to become more informed about leadership, and to enjoy yourself. BY THE WAY, Chela Thompson, Mandy Mew (Chapter R), Leona McDade (Chapter R), and I won the “mock” meeting presentation with the Beatles running our meeting. You should have been there. Connie Jordan

Cindy Elizondo Cooper Smyth

From Cooper Smith...

Greetings, I had a wonderful opportunity for a portion of the Chapter "U" Goldwing Riders to be a part of "my ride". I am not only new to riding Goldwings but I am only 2-3 weeks experienced at riding motorcycles all together. Originally, I was going to an event in Poth, Tx and must have jotted down the wrong time/place; but without disappointment I meet up with Mike Mills , and Steve & Sue Ochs who were going to Alamo City in Brackettville, TX. I have to admit that I was nervous about participating in a group ride, something I have never done before. All Three Wingers took me under their wing (intentional pun) and put me at ease by explaining how things would go, and different hand signals and communications that might occur. They also explained that this is really "my ride" with some extra members joining along.

As we rode off into the morning sunrise I was thinking "what in the world did I get myself into". But as I was riding I definitely did not feel alone; they radioed road hazards, lane placement, construction tips. There is an indescribable feeling of bliss while riding through the highways that can only be explained by someone who has experienced it as well. They really allowed me to build my confidence and help me gain more experience. I started by mimicking their movements and listening to which hazards were of greater concern on highways. I learned that even as a group, we tend to be invisible to the other vehicles on the road. When we were about to arrive at our destination, they even warned about the gravel roads and some helpful tips on survival. I must say that I am not too keen on gravel roads but I would have been more fearful, possibly to the point of not even attempting them, without the aid and guidance of the other riders.

After a day of fun and frivolous activities, it was time to return home. This was definitely more relaxing due to a solid foundation of what to expect. It provided me with the confidence and control that I was even able to actually participate in the use of the radio while driving. I even was bold enough to use the outer pegs; boy did I cool down when using those. Stopping at each DQ along the way didn't hurt either ;-)

For any future "new" riders out there I truly recommend this group of folks. They take what you learn in the MSF classes and build upon those skills. I was able to gain 300 miles under my belt in a safe manner while still enjoying one outstanding ride… It has truly made a lifetime impression on me and has sparked a desire to be able to return the favor; I do realize that I still have a long way to go. Mike, Steve and Sue, I thank you for everything and look forward to other activities.

Cooper -new motorcycle rider -new Goldwing owner -One proud customer of the Chapter "U" hospitality.

As an additional note, Cooper also attended the Horizons Training on 26-27 July! He is being fully immersed in GWRRA and Chapter U!

Thank you to Martha Gover who not only helped me shop for the snacks for the seminar but showed up with a list to make sure we had what we needed! Thanks to Dave Weaver who coordinated use of the building through his connections in the Alamo Community College District. The numbers had

grown to be just too big for the conference room at Yamaha of San Antonio. Brad made up a certificate for Dave to give to St. Philip’s for their assistance in securing the building. Thanks to Lynne Heene, Chapter O Chapter Director, who facilitated the seminar, and to John Simonick (Chapter H) and Ron and Magaly Griffis (Chapter X) who acted as trainers for our Horizons seminar. Our Texas District sure is in good hands with the Trainers we have on board! Thanks to everyone who showed up early to help set up, and to those who pitched in to make sure we left everything ship-shape in the classrooms we used. Clean up happened so fast I had a hard time tracking where everything was moving to! Last but not least, thanks to the Chapter U participants who showed up, willing to give up a weekend to learn more about GWRRA, each other, and themselves. Not only did all the “Red Shirts” who participated in the seminar and in the Saturday night dinner show a lot of chapter spirit to our visiting District Trainers and other GWRRA members, but we had a whole lot of fun! Some of our Horizons Chapter U participants at Horizons came up with some great ideas on the relationship between Chapter U and FUN: “Remember U is always in the middle of FUN” and “There is no FUN without U”! The latest entrant to the snappy Chapter U sayings is “U keeps FUN together!” Can you come up with any original sayings we should add to our list? Let us know! Co-riders can always email me directly at [email protected].

From The CD Continued From Page 2 On Monday the 28

th, we had our first “Playing Hookie” impromptu ride as Maria Delaughter calls it! She and Ron are off on

Mondays and several of the rest of us are retired or semi so we can ride on Mondays as well. Moving on to August, everyone should be getting back into the grove. Most of us will be finished with vacations and school will be starting up again. Still hot, so most of the ride will be leaving early and getting back before the heat of the day. Several new ride locations and some others we have not been to in a while! Check out the ride schedule and Mike Mills’ “Ride Coordinator Ramblings” further on in this issue! Tom Byrd does most of the pictures for the chapter and I fill in when I can. Many others have also contributed on rides and the pictures are greatly appreciated! So, when we head out on a ride, take your camera along and don’t hesitate to send all those great photos so we can get them on the web and in the newsletter! Oh, even if they a bit too dark or light, I can usually fix ‘em up! We can always use write-ups on chapter functions. You should be tired by now of the ones Jill & I write! We do have some great writers in the chapter so bring it on!

Accident Avoidance

The following article pops up on my reminder board quarterly as a reminder to practice emergency braking and contains some good accident avoidance techniques.

As Candy and I ride through the countryside on the way back from the scenic Northwest and the Black Hills, we

thought you might be able to use a fresh approach to our monthly drive.

by Jerry Palladino (MOTORMAN)

“I read somewhere recently that 99% of the crashes most riders get involved in are avoidable. While that may seem a little hard to believe, it just may be true.

t's look at the most common motorcycle crash which of course, occurs when another vehicle violates your right of way. This usually happens as you approach an intersection and a vehicle turns left in front of you. It also occurs when a vehicle pulls out from a side road into your path, but let's look at the left turning vehicle first and how to avoid the crash since your actions should be pretty much the same for both scenarios.

Here are the best ways to avoid a crash in these situations. First, look at least 12 seconds ahead of your motorcycle. Your eyes should be scanning from left to right and up and down. The sooner you see the potential hazard, the more time you'll have to react. Second, since most crashes happen in an intersection, slow down when approaching one. Cover both your front and rear brakes as you get closer to the intersection. Position your bike to the left side of your lane. If you're going to have to swerve around the left turning vehicle, your swerve will usually be to the left around the back of the vehicle and then quickly back to the right. However, most of the time in that situation, your only course of action will be to stop quickly using both your front and rear brakes. That's why it is so important to practice emergency braking using both brakes. The average rider never does practice braking, consequently, in that situation, the average rider slams on the rear brake, locks the tire and skids right into the vehicle. Even if he misses the vehicle, he still slides onto the ground. Either way, he crashes for no reason. By looking way ahead of your motorcycle, you'll be able to anticipate the actions of that vehicle and be able to apply your brakes long before it becomes an emergency. If you spend just a few minutes a week practicing emergency braking, you will lessen the chances of locking the rear wheel dramatically.

The second most common motorcycle crash involves only the motorcycle and it’s called failure to negotiate a turn. What usually happens is the rider gets into a turn and suddenly believes he's going too fast to make it around the curve. Maybe the rider hears the pegs start to scrape. Since he's not familiar with that sound, he panics, straightens up the bike, then looks at the yellow line in the road, the guard rail, or even the oncoming vehicle and a crash occurs. In over 600 cases of failure to negotiate a curve studied, in every case the bike was capable of making the turn at the speed the rider was going, the rider was not.

So, how do you avoid this crash? It's simple. Learn to use head and eyes properly. When rounding a curve to the left, position your bike to the right side of the lane and focus on the end of the turn and no where else. Never, never, look at the yellow line, the guard rail, or the oncoming car. If the road curves to the right, position your bike to the left side of the lane as you enter the curve. In addition, find your bikes' limits in a parking lot at 5mph where the worst that could happen is a simple tip-over. The bottom line, practice makes perfect. Learn to use your head and eyes properly. It is the key to safe riding. Learn to use both your front and rear brakes and keep them from locking so you very well may be able to avoid 99% of the crashes you're likely to be involved in. At the very least, you will minimize injuries to yourself and damage to your bike. Don't be an average rider who depends on dumb luck. Instead, practice and Ride Like a PRO.”

Remember Our Safety Is Your Responsibility.

What are some sources for coupons (both on-line and paper)? There are numerous sources for coupons that members could consider. Check the Sunday newspaper Smart Source (smartsource.com) for free coupons on line. Also, other flyers that are in the Sunday paper such as redplum.com. If one checks Google, there are in excess of 3 million web sites. To get to these sites, put in Free Coupons and this listing will come up. I can never keep coupons organized. What are some ways to organize coupons so they are easy to find and in the right location? There are several ways to organize your coupons. Each person needs to make their choice. They can be by alphabetical order, by month/date, by isle in your super market and by store you would consider making the purchase from. Or, if you have a great memory, just put them all in a packet, go shopping, and go through the whole stack and grab the ones you need. Of course, you need to go through all coupons from time to time to ensure they are still valid and up to date.

Are there any great local coupons for restaurants, movies, etc? Great local coupons for restaurants, movies, etc: The Entertainment Book lists local restaurants, etc, where you purchase one entree and get the second free or half price. You may also go on line for the entertainment book for coupons. www.mysa.com also lists discount coupons that can be printed for your use. Travel coupons: You can pick up the Travel Coupon Guide and Room Saver for Texas and some out of state lodging at the Valero station at IH 35 and 3009. These are free publications. You can get these on line at HotelCoupons.com and Roomsaver.Com. CAUTION: Some folks clip all kinds of coupons that they will never use and others will feel they must use a coupon that has a decent savings. But, among us, needs to purchase Pampers for our children? Hey, if it was Depends, might be something we would want to purchase at a discounted price.

Each new month brings another newsletter article suspense. One would think that writing an article each month would be hard and very time consuming. I mean how do you come up with a topic each month? Even though I was unsure if I could actually pen something that anyone would be interested in I decided to give it a whirl. That was over two years ago! Now, I do tend to give Brad a bit of anxiety due

to the untimely completion of my article for his suspense to get the newsletter out, but even so his talents prevail each month. So Brad here is my empty promise to get my article in earlier. The importance of the newsletter and web page can not be understated. Even more important, we must recognize what a great job in time and effort Brad and Jill put into them. This is the best way for a vibrant chapter to keep the information flowing and bring new people into the fun. Our chapter has garnered recognition for the newsletter, web page, and shirts. I hope our CDs will expand on those accolades in their article or at least our next gathering. We all can help to continue that success. I found that it just doesn’t matter what the topic, there is a place for your articles in OUR newsletter. You can contribute to “Nancy Knows,” have an idea for a “Healthier U”, write a “Member Spotlight,” or “What I Learned From Riding.” We have only had a few articles written on trips and they were all fantastic. Trip reports are great because it lets those of us who have JOBS live through your exploits. The subject of a topic each month just seems to get easier for me. Belonging to TX-“U” allows me to sing the praises of the greatest membership in GWRRA. I don’t say this lightly! You only have to look back through our newsletters to see where our membership has stepped up to the plate to make things happen time and again. This month has been no exception. On a personal note Maria Delaughter has asked if she could help with our chapter contact list. Of course we said yes! So you will be seeing Maria working hard to get the list updated. You can give her your information at the next meeting or simply email her at [email protected] Thanks Maria! This month’s big event was the Horizons training held at the Northeast Lakeview College and hosted by TX”U”. I think the biggest thing to highlight was that we had a newcomer to Chapter “U” attend the training and that, according to our District Officers was a first. I am sure Cooper didn’t know what he was getting into but having him on my team was definitely a great asset. I look forward to seeing him on future chapter rides and working with him on projects like the upcoming Rally. Horizons gave us the chance to explore our communication and organizational skills in a low threat environment. Our District Staff should be commended on an outstanding job. The materials were presented in such a way that everything flowed smoothly and could easily be applied to our end of course exercises. I will not go into details here but I will tell you that we all had a really great (hilarious) time. So, if you truly want to know about the experience of Horizons, I highly recommend that you attend the next time it is offered. You won’t regret it! Thanks again for all your support!

Steve & Susan Ochs, Schertz, TX

Steve was born and raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He joined the Air Force in 1970 and was stationed at Lackland AFB. His love of motorcycles came in 1973 when he bought a used Harley Davidson 125 Dirt Bike. He bought the bike while he was at Lackland. In 1974 he decided to sell that one and buy a newer Harley Davidson 125 Dirt Bike. In 1975 he bought a Honda 454. In the early 80's, he bought a used police bike that was a Honda Goldwing 1000. He had that bike for 4 years and drove it with friends in and around San Antonio before moving to Houston and he then sold the bike. In 2004, he was in need of transportation and he decided it would be cheaper to buy a bike than a vehicle, so we began our search. We finally decided on a Yamaha 650 Classic. A friend/co-worker of ours who belonged to GWRRA in Victoria, invited us to a meeting. We finally went to one and at the time we didn't feel we were ready to join. A few months later he asked us to another meeting and when we met one of the members, he told Steve that he had a '89 Goldwing 1500 that he wanted to sell. We became GWRRA Associate Members at this time. He had always wanted another one and we told him we want the bike but we would need to sell our Yamaha. Steve was working as a detention officer for Victoria County, so he decided to park the bike in the parking lot near a busy street. The first weekend he had it out there, a gentleman called and wanted to purchase the bike. We rode the 1500 until May of 2006. Steve had his eyes set on the pearl white 2005 Goldwing 1800 at the local dealership in Victoria for quite awhile. In April 2006, he had gone on the yearly man's trip the local chapter had planned and experienced some problems with the bike. We decided it was time to get a newer bike and we bought the new bike just in time to go to our first Wing Ding in Nashville, TN. We had so much fun. I was born in Yorktown, TX but lived in Cuero until 1975, when I moved to Victoria. My love for motorcycles started when I was in high school and a boy I dated in high school had one. I don't remember what type of motorcycle it was but it was fun and I was hooked. My brother had a motorcycle for a little while after I had left home. He had a wreck on the bike the day before my daughter was born. He was very lucky to have just suffered some bruises and scrapes, it could have been much worse; he had flown over the car that hit him and the bike went underneath. In later years, I worked with a cousin who rode a Harley and he would take me riding with him. We had so much fun. I met Steve while he was working at an armored car company in Houston in 2003 and I worked at the home office in Victoria. I had several co-workers in Victoria that rode motorcycles and our security alarm manager needed someone to go with him to pick up a vehicle for him but they would have to ride on the back of his Harley. No one wanted to ride with him, so I went to everyone's amazement. Steve and I got married in May of 2005 and we have ridden to many places on our motorcycles. I think our greatest treasure is the 2005 Goldwing. We love riding and I really love the idea that he had while we were at our first Wing Ding. We started purchasing magenta color matched pieces for the bike because my favorite color is purple. Steve has been in San Antonio since September of last year and I just moved here in May. We have met many people that we consider friends since becoming GWRRA members. We love to travel and we love to plan trips on the bike because you are able to really see things that you don't in a vehicle.

How to Treat Shock: A victim may go into shock for many reasons including injury, blood loss, allergic reaction, internal bleeding and infection. Shock is caused by the heart not pumping enough blood to provide oxygen to the victim's body. Shock is a life-threatening medical condition,

therefore, paramedics must be called immediately while first-aid is being performed. First call 911, time is very important!! Step 1: Learn the signs of shock: Clammy, pale skin, confusion, disorientation and general weakness. If someone you know starts to go into shock, it is important you call for paramedics, wait for them to arrive and stay calm while doing all you can for the victim. Step 2: Wrap the victim in a blanket to preserve body temperature if they are shivering or shaking. A coat or jacket may be substituted for the blanket. Step 3: Lay the victim down with their feet elevated above their heart to increase circulation to major organs, if they have not been in a major accident. Keep talking to the victim and be reassuring. Stay calm, hold their hand; let them know you are not going to leave them. Step 4: Make the victim as comfortable as you can and check that their airway is not obstructed. Although breathing may be shallow, observe the condition of the victim in case it worsens and you need to perform CPR. Stay calm and in charge of the situation until paramedics arrive and can take over. This is the first article, of a planned series, regarding the topics of first aid and buddy care. Our main concern when an unfortunate incident occurs is to lessen the effects. It can be really simple actions that make a huge difference when an emergency arises. Please continue to send in your requests for future articles. I recently learned how to set my email spam filters more accurately and hope I did not miss anyone's email. Things are moving a bit quicker now for the rally. We have a great group of sponsors already on board. These include Yamaha of San Antonio, Woods Cycle Country, Acosta, Moto Liberty, Cycle Gear, Cycle Rider and Joe Harrison Motor Sports. Cowboy Honda in Kyle may be coming on board next week! We hope to have many more confirmed soon! We can always use more door prizes. If you know someone or a company willing to donate something, just let us know! We do have a donor letter on the website if they request one. Even small little things to put into “goodie bags” would be great to. Don’t forget your donations to the silent auction as well! Some chapters make more on the silent auctions than on the rally! We also have ads placed in a few magazines and several online sites. These include Wing World, Ride Texas, Letsride.com, motorcycleevents.com, bikerplaza.com and digitaltexas.com. By the time you read this, we should be listed in a few more! The more we get the word out, the better the participation should be. We are putting rally flyers everywhere we can. We even have a few standup types with pull-off registration forms! All Texas GWRRA chapter CDs, MECs and newsletter editors have had the rally flyer sent to them and will get it again a few weeks prior to the rally. It should start hitting the newsletters soon! We want to make sure the word is out! If you want some flyers to put out, we should have a bunch at the chapter gathering! Next rally meeting will be Sunday 14 September, 12:30 at the Longhorn Café. Check our website for the latest information. http://www.texaschapteru.org/2008ChapURally.htm We have lots of folks who have volunteered to help out. Most of the help we will need is the day of the rally. Setting up, tearing down and clean-up will go much quicker if we have a bunch of folks! For lots of us, October 18

th will be a long day!

BY THE BOOK By: Dale Wingrove

Region H Trainer

The “By The Book” articles are intended to help familiarize Volunteer Leaders and GWRRA Members with the guidelines, policies,

procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer’s Guidebook. Any quotes or references to topics contained in our OGB

should not be taken “out of context”. Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District and Chapter newsletters.

The GWRRA WAY is found on pages B-3 and B-4 of the OGB. I hope this helps our members to know what the differences are between a

Club and GWRRA.

HOW GWRRA DIFFERS FROM MOTORCYCLE “CLUBS”

“GWRRA is not a motorcycle club.” We’ve all heard it, haven’t we? But just what does it mean? Simply put, it means that our Association and our chapters don’t function in the same organizational and procedural format that “clubs” do. That is, we don’t elect anyone to any position by running candidates against each other and having the membership vote on them. We don’t choose our officers with popularity contests. We don’t impose our wishes on others. We select, not elect. Clubs usually are local in scope. Chapters are national or international and tied to a single organization. We don’t have long and heated debates, make motions, second motions, call for votes or go into long, detailed reports in our chapter meetings. We don’t need uniforms, people giving us rules to obey, or exorbitant fees or dues. We try not to do any “heavy-breathing. ”In other words, a GWRRA chapter meeting is not presided over by a “president” and conducted according to Roberts’ Rules of Order or the parliamentary procedure process. That is the format that many “clubs” use in their meetings. We don’t say that we are better than clubs, we are just different. Some people like the club format of operation. This is all well and good. Those folks should be encouraged to attend and participate where they are the most comfortable. We think when they “try it”(our format!), “they’ll like it. ”The GWRRA chapter format of operation is more flexible than a club format. A GWRRA chapter is not a “club,” either in its organizational structure or its operational format. It is PART of something bigger than itself. Sometimes, less-informed chapter participants will try to lead the chapter into the “club” format of operation. It’s the responsibility of GWRRA officers to work together to retain the non-political, non-club environment in the chapter. If this becomes a problem, other members of the Operations Team will be able to assist you.

AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT IS...

A CLUB usually consists of:

1. Self-governing and regulated body of local individuals 2. Monthly dues 3. Political officers and events, campaigns, voting, etc. 4. Popularity contests decide outcomes 5. Individual’s qualifications may not be important in holding office 6. Attempts to maintain control and build “empires” 7. Many personality conflicts 8. “Bosses” and the potential for power struggles 9. Majority rules - 49% disagreement 100% of the time 10. Funding and disbursement disagreements 11. Seldom clear “directions” and goals” 12. Non-educational 13. Everything must be VOTED upon

A GWRRA CHAPTER usually consists of:

1. Officers selected and appointed based upon qualifications and desire 2. Continuing officer development and training 3. Regular Operations seminars and meetings to establish new concepts 4. Officers are volunteer “employees” 5. Members wants and needs are the only guiding forces 6. Meetings with purposes - dissemination of valuable information, fun, education 7. Common purposes - no popularity contests 8. Decisions based upon member response and input from staff and committees 9. Limited financial goals and maximum stability - all officers have corporate liability insurance 10. Members participate as they choose 11. Members are WELCOMED by all chapters 12. No additional dues or fees at the chapter, state or regional level 13. Full time Rider Education Division with trained professionals and Rewarding Programs

Honda Aims To Increase Motorcycle Production And Business June 4, 2008 - 11:48 AM In a 2008 mid-year speech, Honda CEO Takeo Fukui talks about a new 3-year mid-term plan that began in April of this year. There were three main points;

1) Strengthening motorcycle business 2) Innovation of automobile manufacturing in Japan 3) Hybrid strategy to achieve full-scale market penetration

Here is a summary of the first section of this plan, as according to Honda's website. 1. Strengthening motorcycle business [ Importance of motorcycle business / 50th anniversary of Super Cub ] · Honda began its business with motorcycles, entered into the global market with motorcycles, and established a business foundation which later enabled Honda to enter into the automobile business. · Motorcycle business is the driving force of Honda’s growth and expansion, and it is one of the key strengths of Honda that other automakers do not have. · Honda currently sells more than 13 million motorcycles annually including commuters which provide an essential means of transportation for people in their daily lives as well as recreational large-size motorcycles which provide the joy of riding. · Among such Honda motorcycle products, the Super Cub model that represents Honda is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. · The Japanese-born Super Cub has maintained its original creative concept and basic style, but has continuously advanced as a model that accommodates the needs and preferences of people in different areas around the world. As a result, the Cub series achieved cumulative worldwide production of 60 million units (as of the end of April 2008). · Demand for motorcycles as a means of transportation is expected to continue to grow mainly in Asian and South American nations. In addition, considering the global high price of crude oil, there is a good chance that motorcycles will be considered not only in developing countries but on a global basis. · Honda will create motorcycle products which reflect the unique characteristics of Honda and exceed the expectations of customers while striving to develop another model which creates a new motorcycle category and market as did the Super Cub. 2. Strengthening motorcycle production · Toward this end, it is important to strengthen motorcycle production. The new motorcycle plant at Honda’s Kumamoto Factory, which began operating in April 2008, will play a key role. · The goals of the transfer of motorcycle production from Hamamatsu, the birthplace of Honda, to Kumamoto are; 1) to improve efficiency by consolidating production and 2) to strengthen Honda’s ability to build motorcycle products which offer new value with even higher quality. · Moreover, Honda will thoroughly strengthen its manufacturing operations at the starting point in Japan, dramatically enhance its competitiveness, and leverage this enhanced competitiveness to further grow and advance its global motorcycle business. · Production at the new motorcycle plant at Kumamoto Factory will reach its full-capacity in the first half of 2009. · In order to efficiently produce approximately 60 models, from commuters to large-size motorcycles, Honda conceived and built from scratch highly efficient and ideal production lines to accommodate the unique characteristics of each model.

TexTexTexTexas Chapter U Newsletteras Chapter U Newsletteras Chapter U Newsletteras Chapter U Newsletter August 2008 August 2008 August 2008 August 2008 Continued From Previous Page · In addition to employing various state-of-the-art equipment, reducing the number of production processes and increased automation are used for mass production models. The new plant will produce motorcycles on three main lines which achieve a high level of human resource efficiency and high flexibility. The new plant also has 15 cell lines where high value added products are assembled completely by a small team of associates. · These cell lines make it possible to build a product with enhanced attractiveness and quality. At the same time, a cell line has a significant benefit in the area of human resource development as it is ideal for the advancement of associates’ skills and sharing of production know-how. · Through these initiatives, including a 20% improvement in workforce efficiency compared to the existing plant, Honda will strive to establish a strong motorcycle production system which will remain highly competitive even if the exchange rate of the Japanese yen to the U.S. dollar is in the 90s. · The new plant also is an environmentally-responsible plant which reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 20% compared to the existing plant through various efforts including utilization of natural energy. · As the leader plant within Honda’s global motorcycle production network, and as a source of Honda’s strength to create products that will exceed the expectations of our customers around the world, Kumamoto Factory will be a driving force of motorcycle business growth in the future. 3. Strengthening technological and product attributes · In the area of environmental technology, installation of PGM-FI (Honda’s Programmed Fuel Injection) on all scooters sold in Japan is now virtually completed, and PGM-FI will be installed on to all Honda motorcycles sold in Thailand by the end of 2009. Honda plans to install PGM-FI on most of its motorcycles worldwide by the end of 2010. · In the area of safety technology, Honda will install a motorcycle airbag system and ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) on more products. Honda plans to install ABS in all 250cc or larger class models worldwide, except off-road models, by the end of 2010. · In advancing nations, Honda will introduce a new model, in the most popular 100cc class, which achieves high fuel efficiency, high performance, and low cost. Sales of this new model will begin first in Thailand in summer 2008 and then in other Asian countries. · In advanced nations, Honda will introduce its innovative environmental and safety technologies including a Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system for motorcycles which significantly improves fuel efficiency as well as electronically-controlled combined ABS (C-ABS), an advanced brake system which further improves stability while braking. Moreover, Honda will improve the product attractiveness of medium-to-large size models and strengthen those aspects of a product which contribute to the joy of riding . · Motorcycle R&D will also be strengthened with a determination and passion to create the Super Cub of the next generation.

Hey Wingers!!! I sure hope you’re ready to do some riding this month because we have a full schedule. I know it’s a bit warm out on the road, but they are dry and beckoning us to do some ridin’. We will start our rides early and hopefully finish up before the full force of the heat hits. Always bring along some water or Gatorade, and use your Coolvest if you have one; they really work well to beat the heat.

So here we go. Our first ride this month is to Lake Travis to dine at the Oasis Restaurant. This place is fabulous. It sits right on the water on the east side of the lake. This not only provides the patrons with a 180 degree view of the lake and surrounding vistas; but, also spectacular evening sunsets as well. Brad is leading the ride and has a fun route lined up. I’m positive everyone who joins us on this ride will have an enjoyable experience. The following weekend, we had initially planned to go to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin. One of our members suggested we go up to Marble Falls for the Drag Boat Races instead. Since the races are only once a year and the Center is open all year long, I decided to make the change. We are going to the Drag Boat Races. My source says we can get good parking close to the river. I’ve seen these type of boats run in San Diego Harbor, and they are awesome. You won’t believe how fast these folks can get across the water. This should be a blast. Next up, on the 16

th of August, we’re headed to the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History in Rosanky. The museum

has numerous restored automobiles spanning the last 100 years. Their goal is to entertain and educate, showcasing the history and impact of automobiles on society. After completing our tour, we will proceed down the road to the community of Lockhart and Black’s Bar-B-Que, said to rival the Luling offerings. We will see. And please remember, Duke is having his 70

th

Birthday bash at his home that evening. Remember to RSVP before 10 August if you plan to attend. You will have a full day with ridin’ and partyin’. Who all has ridden over Choke Canyon Reservoir? I sure haven’t, so this is a ride I plan to attend. On 23 August, Steve and Susan Ochs will lead this ride, and they always seem to find some nice back roads to travel. The planned lunch stop will be at the Nolan Ryan Steak House, said to be one of the best around. I always enjoy a juicy steak with all the fixin’s. How about you? To complete our rides for August, Duke and Chela Thompson have invited all who want to come to their home (Terra Fina) for lunch on the 30th. But first, we will enjoy a back roads trek to Bandera for “Celebrate Bandera Days” and a parade where they bring the longhorns through town for a cattle drive demonstration. Better find a good spot to park the bikes and another good spot to watch the parade. Don’t want to have any injuries to bike or body. This is definitely a ride out of the ordinary. Well, I hope you can join us for all the rides this month, but if you can make only one that would be super too. Looking forward to ridin’ with you. Ride safe and keep the rubber side down. Remember, “U” holds FUN together…hee, hee, hee.
