Gold in North Carolina
• The first gold rush in the United States occurred a few years after its discovery
• In 1799, of a hunk of "heavy yellow' metal in or along Little Meadow Creek in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, by Conrad John Reed, aged 12.
First gold rush 1803
• A gold rush started as a slave found a 28 pound gold stone next to a lake
• Many of discoveries continued to happen until gold was discovered in California in 1849
Gold Found in California
• James Marshall was building a saw mill and saw something shine in the water.
• People everywhere dropped everything and ran to California to dig for gold.

• Americans who joined the rush for gold in 1849

• Almost all Men. People recall seeing towns with only 2 women in it.
• Men would pay 5 dollars for a biscuit made by a women.
• Small villages turned into towns of thousands of people overnight
