The Queensland Medibank Junior Development Series Finals were held in Rockhampton over the 26th and 27th of October. It was a big weekend of tennis and the Gold Coast players really embraced playing as a team and ended up WINNING the overall tournament.

The competition went right down to the wire with the Gold Coast team leading by 3 at the end of day 1. Seeing their lead evaporate, Gold Coast were able to pick up some vitals wins late on day 2 to hold off North QLD and Far North QLD by 1 and 2 points respectively. Gold Coast came home strong to take home the Ken Hick-Murray Whitbread Trophy.Congratulations to all who participated in the event. Alex Furst also took out the 11/Under Boys singles title.

Huge Congratulations to Jesse Stephenson, Laia Pasini and Harrison Turner. All participating in their first ever State Finals and all coming away with fantastic results. Jesse Stephenson and Laia Pasini both won their pools on day one, which put them into the semi-finals for day two. Laia played great tennis but lost her semi-final. Jesse won her semi 6/7 6/3 10/4. Jesse then played a great match in the final where she was beaten and ended up running 2nd overall. Laia played her playoff for 3 & 4th and played a tough match where she won 10/8 in the third set super tiebreak. Harrison Turner played great tennis over the weekend and displayed great sportsmanship where he ran 12th overall.

In the 13/under age group all Gold Coast participants played with great sportsmanship and were all fantastic team players for the Gold Coast. Ben Hielscher played fantastic tennis throughout the two days and ended up running 3rd overall. Darcy Devilliers showed great fighting spirit in all his matches and ended up running 9th overall. In the girls, Rhiannon Frizzell and Emma Mitchell both played well for the Gold Coast Team. Rhiannon had to fight hard in her last playoff match and she ended up running 6th overall. Emma Mitchell played some awesome tennis through out the two days and ran 10th overall.

Tayla Lawson, Shannen Meyer, Karl Mosterd and Josh Piunti all displayed all round great sportsmanship whilst playing over the two days. Tayla Lawson won her pool on the first day and ended up coming 4th place overall. Shannen Meyer played some fantastic tennis and had great results on day two to come 11th overall. Birthday boy Karl came 6th place overall and Josh Piunti ran 7th overall.

The 17/Under age group consisted of Samantha Cameron, Jennifer Clarke, Ben Mitchell and Khyel Bentley-Tucker. All these players showed fantastic leadership over the weekend through their tennis and also through always looking out for the team at all times. Jennifer Clarke and Samantha Cameron played some tough matches where they both competed very well. Jennifer Clarke won her pool on day one and won her semi final. She lost in the final and ran 2nd overall, which was a fantastic result. Samantha Cameron played some great matches and ended up coming 5th overall. Ben Mitchell and Khyel Bentley-Tucker both played a lot of competitive matches throughout the weekend. Ben competed in his last year of the JDS state finals and came 4th overall and Khyel came 7th overall.

A huge thank you to the supervisors for the trip. It was a big weekend and all supervisors watched a lot of tennis. Thank you to Stephen Kua, Connie Chan and Ian Brosman for volunteering their time to this weekend. Also a big thank you to Totally teeth and the Gold Coast Regional Assembly for the funding that was put towards this state finals trip!

The Tennis Gold Coast Annual General Meeting will be held at Queens Park Tennis Centre on Wednesday 26th February 2014. All positions including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Executive Committee are up for re-election.

TGC President Mike Ford said, ‘The 2013 TGC Committee has done a great job this year and implemented considerable changes to raise awareness for our sport and increase player participation. We are keen to continue this hard work in 2014 and hope that as many TGC af�liated clubs as possible would nominate pro-active candidates for committee.’

Gold Coast Tennis enthusiasts, players, coaches, club management and supporters came together for the 2013 annual ‘Celebration of Tennis’ soiree at Southport Golf Club on October 19. 110 guests from the tennis community had a great night of socialising, traditional games and award presentations.

Mike Evans was brilliant as Master of Ceremonies and the raf�es were a highlight of the night with over $3000 in prizes won.

St Hilda's School ExcellenceBursaries - 2015St Hilda’s School is fortunate to be able offer a range of Excellence Bursaries to new students for entry to Years 7 to 11 in 2015. Many of these awards have been established as a result of the generosity of parents, friends, associated organisations and bequests.

St Hilda’s School awards a number of Sport Excellence Bursaries to students who have strengths in particular sports. These will be granted to students who are new to the school and could not otherwise attend St Hilda’s School without �nancial assistance.

EligibilityApplicants must be Australian citizens and new to the school in 2015.Students should have strengths in particular sports and be able to demonstrate individual or team selection at State or National levels.They should also be eager to participate in a wide range of opportunities available at St Hilda’s School. Participation in two out of three of the school’s core sports of Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming at House and QGSSSA levels is a requirement.All applicants also must be able to demonstrate an above average academic performance, which must be maintained throughout the term of the Bursary.Students who are awarded Sport Excellence Bursaries will be expected to sustain their level of participation for the term of the Bursary and respect the philosophy and rules, which govern the school.

ApplicationThese Bursaries are awarded on the basis of completion of an independent scholarship test, current school records and certi�cates of achievement, refereed application and interviews.

The 2013 Tennis Gold Coast Aged & Adult Championships, an Honour Board event, was held at Queens Park and St Hilda’s School on Sunday 24th November. It was a great day with many fantastic matches played. Play was brie�y interrupted by a summer storm mid afternoon but matches resumed until all were played. The Tennis Plus Academy is an exciting venture in tennis player development and high performance pathway programming.

Based at Queens Park Tennis Centre, The Tennis Plus Academy represents a new and innovative beginning in tennis player development. Combining a �rst class vocational education with a high performance tennis training program student athletes are given the skills and knowledge to excel in a professional tennis environment. We have the best coaches and trainers available to ensure that our students are provided the best possible advantage in furthering their tennis and professional careers.

Through the Tennis Excellence Program, students are subjected to an intense training regime with a timetable structured around the study of three vocational education quali�cations. “Education and High Performance sports coaching are becoming increasingly linked. Athletes are looking for programs that allow them to gain an education while not interrupting their training and competition schedule,” says Tennis Plus Academy’s Director Grant Anderson.

Aspiring tennis players enter the Tennis Excellence Program with the aim of giving themselves the best opportunity to further their tennis ability. Each week student athletes supplement their studies with 20 plus hours on court with expert coaches. One of the reasons the educational outcomes of the program are so appealing is due to the integration of student’s theoretical studies with the practical applications they receive throughout the high performance-coaching program. “Any tennis player with the desire to improve and succeed in the sport needs to develop their ability to learn not only on the court but also in the classroom. The innovative combination of education delivery and tennis coaching developed through our Tennis Excellence Program is the ideal environment for players to maximise their success,” says Director of Coaching John Birrell.

On completion of our Tennis Excellence Program students are ideally prepared to continue their career in professional sport. New Elite Coachjoins Sonic New Elite Coachjoins Sonic

Bill McDonald, lifetime coach of Brendan Moore and Brad Clews, and former coach of Matt Klien, Steven Gort, Chris Letcher and Gavin Van Peppersel, has joined the coaching team at Sonic Tennis Palm Beach.

Bill will be available for all elite squad training, private one on one coaching, tournament travel and is always in the trenches watching his athletes do battle.

Sonic Tennis attends all local JDS, Optus Junior Tour and Australian money tournaments. They have two of their very own mini buses to travel to tournaments in and believe in the supporting their athletes at all times.

Miami Celebrates 60 Years Miami Tennis Club recently celebrated their 60th Birthday with over 150 guests reminiscing about tennis at their club in the years gone by. Past Presidents including, Frank Tudball 20 years, Jim Paterson 9 years, Charlie Elms 1 year and Ray West current President for the past 13 years were all present, making up 44 of the 60 years.

Miami Tennis Club started with humble beginnings with 1 court built by Miami Progress Association in 1953. Miami Tennis Club is immensely proud of its history and now has 10 �oodlit courts and Pizzey Park and 3 courts on the highway, clubhouse, buildings and a range of facilities. They offer coaching and �xtures and are experienced at hosting and managing tournaments. Miami Tennis Club would like to thank the many people and volunteers who have contributed to the club over the past 60 years.

Miami Celebrates 60 Years

The Asia Paci�c Tennis League (ATL) is a new and innovative tennis league that has brought together teams of men and women from across the Asia-Paci�c region. The league provided players with the opportunity to play regular paid high-level matches.

The Beenleigh Blaze had a red-hot team in 2013 and were a force to be reckoned with this year! The competition kicked off on the 8th of November and ran through to the 24th of November.

Beenleigh Tennis Club played host to the event on Friday the 22nd of November and hundreds came along wearing red on the night to support the Beenleigh Blaze. It was a great night of entertaining tennis with some very close matches being played.
