Going green, in baby steps

The green movement should be absolutely part of our spiritual responsibility.

We consider ourselves one with all living beings on

the Earth and with the Earth.

Whatever we do that hurts the Earth hurts us.

We want to be responsible.

We see the environment as a portal to connect withthe divine.

Why now? Because, we are at the crisis level.

As congregations we have a bigopportunity to substantially reduceour collective carbon output. The

bigger the building, the more energysavings can be found. By actively

“greening” our buildings, we can not

only reduce our carbon output andsave money, but we will be a witnessto our neighbors.

Salvation in the Bathroom

Salvation in the Bathroom Saving preciouswater resources is good by itself, but it alsoreduces CO2 released in the process of extracting, transporting and treating water

for our use. In California, 6.5% of totalenergy used (over 15,000 Gwz) is used foractivities related to water.

Simply adding an aerator to a faucet can

reduce water use by 50%!, fix leakypipes and faucets and repair “running” toilets to conserve water and reduce CO2.

Churches preaching green

Even churches not normally associated withenvironmentalism are going on the offensive.Earlier this month, Southern Baptist leaderssigned a declaration calling for action onclimate change. On March 9, the Vaticansuggested that pollution could be a new sin. In2006,

the Presbyterian Church asked its members tobecome carbon-neutral, or to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions. A Call to Action, formed lastyear, generated controversy by urgingevangelicals to push the government, companies and the faithful to reduce fossil-fuelemissions
