Hello! Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the award winning Goin’ Band from Raiderland! As a potential member of Goin’ Band, you are invited to share in the “Foot and a Half” experience that is guaranteed to each member that earns a position in our organization. This foot and a half of prime real estate is a reminder of our commitment to music and our appreciation for our eighty-‐eight years of history. Summer Band begins Saturday, August 17th at Noon in the Student Union Building (Red Raider Ballroom). Auditions are Sunday, August 18th. We do NOT limit how many students we accept into the program, but there are music and visual expectations associated with our selection process. We are looking for students that are actively engaged in making positive contributions to Goin’ Band musically, physically and socially. MUSIC COMPONENT Goin’ Band serves as a spirit organization and a university course so the musical demands of our ensemble are highly valued. We want you to be successful so we provide several opportunities for you to receive instruction from our student leaders and graduate assistants before your audition.
(1) The music component is 60% of your overall audition. (2) Auditions are NOT blind and either a School of Music faculty member and/or a designated graduate student
will adjudicate your audition using a box system (attached below). Our section leaders will give small and large sectionals on Saturday, 8/17.
Note: If you are interested in Court Jesters, our indoor athletic band, this Goin’ Band music audition will serve as your Court Jester audition.
VISUAL COMPONENT We are offering four optional instructional camps this summer to give all potential members an opportunity to learn our marching techniques before summer band. We use a straight-‐leg technique (with a soft/relaxed knee on the cross). We also use the Tech Step, a traditional high step, for our pre-‐game show.
(1) The visual component is 40% of your overall audition. (2) The band staff and graduate assistants will do all visual auditions. You will do a multitude of marching
fundamentals that typically include forward march, backwards march and our pre-‐game Tech step sequences.
INSTRUMENTS We will check out Piccolos, Tenor Saxophones, F Marching Horns (not Mellophones), Trombones, Baritones and Sousaphones on day one of summer band. There is no charge for these instruments. Audition results will be posted no later than two hours AFTER all have auditioned on Sunday, August 18th. Once you have earned a position with us, you have committed yourself to a semester to entertain, to inspire and to be excellent. We look forward to you joining our team; it will be one of the best experiences you will have in your collegiate career!
Sincerely,
Duane Hill Director of Athletic Bands Associate Director of Bands
