Lesson Outlines are divided into two parts: A Teacher’s Notes page, followed by Activity Ideas for each of the different age groups. The lesson plans contain a number of options for you to choose from. Lesson plans have a pre-selected 25-30 minute core lesson shown by the in the choices boxes. For those who have more time, or prefer to make other choices, there are other activity suggestions. Remember you may glean from all age levels and adapt as appropriate for your group.

Unit Outlines

The Manual provides Unit Outlines to explain the thinking behind each unit, content and concepts to be explored by the unit, and how the following lessons will meet the unit aims. There are eight units in each GodSpace book.

Required ResourcesDepending upon your activity selection you will need a number of resources. There are 6 frequently required resources. These are represented by symbols in the lesson plans, i.e.:

Lesson Outlines

Lesson Notes

Each lesson comes with it’s own set of Teacher’s Notes. This is the curriculum page. It provides an overview of the content of the lesson, aims, learning outcomes, teaching tip. Remember that the learning outcomes may not always be immediately measurable.

Activity Ideas

Activity Ideas include a “Required Resources” section and three lesson segments. start up a short ‘hook’ or introduction. These usually relate to the big idea of the lesson. Sometimes it’s a get to know the group activity. get into it the body of the lesson, the time when together you ‘get into’ the Bible and/or content of the lesson. go for it time to reflect on, and think about what they have just learned. The magazines are often the stimuli for responding to the material covered.

Option BoxThe first two segments in each lesson plan have pre-selected choices shown by to help you get started.

Combined/Large Group

These outlines are designed for large group/assembly style presentations for each lesson. We are aware that many people present this way each week.

Lesson ToolsLesson Tools are included visual aids and resources on the USB card. They are support materials for your lessons with games, start up activities, response stimuli, dramas and printable cut out story telling pictures.

ABBREVIATIONS In the lesson outline pages Lesson Tool resources are written in an abbreviated form: i.e. LT, lesson number and title of activity. e.g. LT L8 ‘Unlikely Hero’ (Lesson Tools, Lesson 8, Unlikely Hero). All Lesson Tools will be linked in the appropriate lesson folder. On page 224 you will find a cross reference of story telling pictures past numbering and the new numbering. You can also purchase two double sided A3 size story telling backgrounds to use like a ‘flannel board” to place your story telling pictures on. You can order them when you order your books or do it on line or via email: [email protected] To ensure the longevity of these poster sized pages and the story telling pictures, it is recommended that you either cover them in clear plastic adhesive paper, or even better, ask your church to have them laminated for you.

Explorers MagazineThe Explorers Magazine caters for the pre-reader or emergent reader. They are designed to be completed with the teacher’s guiding help, not as a ‘do alone’ activity.

Power Tools USB card (See page 10 for how to use)

Offering more choices, the Power Tools USB card contains: all you need for each lesson in one folder weekly Bible passages and memory verses to print out or display on interactive whiteboard songs as mp3’s, timed PowerPoints with words and music for each song and words of all the songs to

photocopy or reproduce on a data projector ( NB. Remember to follow copyright requirements and register with CCLI any words that you copy)

‘Extras’ page with reproducible activities sheets for fast finishers all the lesson tools Powerpoint Lesson Presentations (in both 4:3 & 16:9 formats) for use with available technology all the story telling pictures to create your own Powerpoint Presentation answers to the magazine activities

MagazinesWe see the need to provide magazines that the children can ‘own’. They are designed to review the lesson, and help the children work towards the learning outcomes.

Adventurers MagazineThe Adventurers Magazine is designed for early readers and you still may need to clearly explain (read) each activity for the children. The activities reinforce the lesson content and concepts helping the children adventure deeper into GodSpace.

Navigators & Voyagers MagazinesThe Navigators Magazine is used to revise or as a stimuli for responding to the material covered in the ‘Get into it’ section. The Voyagers Magazine is provided to help the children think through their own beliefs, feelings and responses to what has been taught in the lesson. The magazine may also be used throughout the lesson plan to help with group discussions.

Support Material

The card has a flip out part (tab) that goes into your computer.Owning the USB card allows you to make one copy of the contents to use and adapt on your own computer. We recommend that you make a copy and store the original away in the back of your Lesson Manual.Does not require the internet in order to work .

Answers for Magazine ActivitiesA complete list of the answers for the Magazine activities is on the Power Tools USB card.

OVERVIEW This first unit is an overview of God’s good news. It is designed as an introduction for the children, whether or not they have had any teaching at all about God, Jesus or the Bible. It starts with God who created a perfect world with the first humans. Then it explores te choices given t humanity to follow God’s ways and the consequence of not following God, and the difference Jesus makes. The final lesson for the unit introduces God’s plan for all who love him, which is to be with him now and in heaven for eternity.God is eternal. He existed before anything else and has a plan for all eternity, a plan that we can be part of only because Jesus died to make it possible. We want children to understand that they can have a part in God’s big story now by responding to Jesus’ invitation to life with him.We trust that getting a glimpse of God’s Big Story at the start of the year will provide a firm foundation for later lessons and help your group see the relevance of the teaching for their lives. Children take on the worldview of the community they live in, so many will have little or no concept of a loving God who is active, now in this world, and for eternity.

UNIT VERSEShort God sent his son to save the world. (Adapted from CEV)

John 3:17Long God did not send his son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them!

HOT teaching tipBeginning Well Part 1Think First

Devout Bible-believing Christians interpret this account in different ways. Be careful not to teach your own belief about the way creation happened as ‘what the Bible says’, particularly if you are teaching children as a representative from a range of Christian backgrounds.

Our emphasise is on the why - not the how.

the BIG ideaGod created the world and created people to be in relationship with him.

lesson AIMFor the children to engage with the Bible account of creation.

learning OUTCOMEThe children will be able to: Explorers share what they think God wants them to know from the creation account.Adventurers recall that God made the world and people and it was very good.Navigators explore the Bible account of the beginning of the world.Voyagers discuss God’s plans for the world.

INSIDE the storyThrough creation everyone can gain some idea of what God is like (Romans 1:20) so it’s a good thing for children to explore and marvel at creation. But only a limited knowledge of God can be gained from the things God made and that’s why the Bible’s record is so important.

This lesson is part of an overview and there is a whole unit later in GodSpace about Creation. Although the Bible account of creation is included in this lesson, the aim is to focus on the Big Idea that this is God’s world and he made us to be in relationship with him rather than the details or order of creation. Verses 1 and 31 of Genesis 1 sum up this creation account.

Even if you feel very familiar with the Genesis 1 passage, read it thoughtfully now, as God’s revelation to the people he made. Note the rhythm and the repetition of the key ideas that “God commanded” and “Evening came then morning” and “God looked at what he had made and it was good”.

The idea that this world and everything in it, including us, rightly belong to God because God made it, is far from the way most people in Western society think and live their lives. The children probably already have their own ideas about the origins of the earth and whom they belong to. Don’t be afraid to let them express contrary views and doubts but challenge them to take seriously the Bible account as one that millions believe and that God has revealed.

Before there were any people, there was God. God didn’t come from anywhere; God was always here. Nobody made God, because God is not a person like us, God is God.So when there was just God, nothing else, nothing to see or hear or smell or taste or touch, nothing but God, the Bible tells us in Genesis 1 that God decided to make the world.God said, “Let there be light” and light started shining. God saw that the light was good. Next God said, “Let there be sky and water. Let all the water below come together so there is dry ground” and the land and sea appeared. God looked at what he had done and it was good! Then God said, “Let there be all kinds of plants, including fruit trees and plants to eat.” And that’s what happened. God looked at what he had done, and it was good.Next God said, “Let’s make the sun and the moon.” He also made the stars. Then God looked at what he had done and it was good. Then God said, “Let the sea be full of fish and swimming creatures, and let birds fly in the sky.” And it happened. God looked at what he had done and it was good.God said, “Now let’s have all sorts of animals.” And that’s what happened. Then God said, “Now we will make people. They will be in charge, they will look after everything I have made.” So God created people. God blessed them and said, “Take care of my world. Everything you need is here.” Then God looked at what he had done. All of it was very good.Ask: What do you think God wants us to know from this story? (Accept responses)Explain that God wants us to know that we are his most special creation and we have a special job to be in charge of all the other creatures on the planet for God!

LESSON 1start up Different Kinds Of Creatures (3-4min)

Say: The natural world is full of amazing living creatures. The Bible says that this wonderful world didn’t just happen - God is behind it all. Create small groups of 3-4 and give them each an A4 sheet of paper folded into three. Instruct them to think of life in the world of nature and decide on something for each category with a reason for their choice: i. The funniest animal. ii. The most amazing insect. iii The weirdest plant.Share choices.

Game: Creatures of The World (5-7min) Set up a rhythm that everyone joins in, like clap, clap, clap, click. Choose a category (like sea creatures, plants, birds, mammals) and take it in turns to call out (on the click) the name of something in that category that hasn’t been previously called out.

get into it Reading the Creation Account (6-8min)

Show your Bible (if different - and a children’s quality Bible) and explain what it means to youExplain that together we are going to use this book over the year to understand more about God’s plan for us.Say: Let’s begin right at the beginning. Read the creation story (Genesis 1) from a quality children’s Bible. Use the story telling pictures - A1-3; B1,7; C1,6-10; T1 or Powerpoint 1 and outline. Discuss the different progress that happens each ‘day’.Talk about how perfect God’s creation is. Affirming that God is perfect and has a plan for us too.

Creation Recording (5-7min)Say: For hundreds of years, scientists have been trying to discover how the world began. The Bible doesn’t tell us in scientific terms, but the first book in the Bible has the name ‘Genesis’ which means beginnings, so let’s explore what it says about the beginnings of the universe.Play the recording (Song 2 or PowerPoint Creation Reading) and encourage the children to listen for: • the first and last sentences of each stanza • words and thoughts that are repeated • how God is the mastermind behind this world.

Bible Exploration (10-12min) Write on the board (or cardboard): * the world we live in * God * peopleGive out Bibles or the weekly Bible passage print outs. Read it while the group follows, first asking them to watch out for what it says about the three things listed on the board.Say: The Bible makes it clear that there is a mastermind behind the universe - God. That’s good news because it means there’s meaning and purpose to life. God is eternal (God was never created, he always existed) and God created humans to be like him and to manage the earth well, for him.

go for it Creation Prayer (6-7min)

Give each child a piece of paper and allow two minutes to list five random letters of the alphabet, and a living creature starting with each letter. (Alternatively write on board).Say: Let’s praise the God who created all life in this world. We’ll start by saying together “We praise you Creator God for living things” and after I call out each letter, you call out the living creature you listed next to that letter. It’s OK for everyone to say things together. After the last one, let’s finish with “We praise you Creator God for all living things.” (Go through the alphabet in order or randomly)

Navigators Magazines (7-8min)Complete the activities. Listen to the song ‘Extraordinary’ (Song 8) as they work.

start up Creative Genius (6-8min)

Copy and cut LT L1 Creative Genius to hand out. Allow volunteers a few minutes to prepare before presenting to the group. Encourage all in their creative interpretation.Say: Humans are amazingly creative but no one has ever come close to the creativity of God as the Bible records it.

Directed Discussion: Creativity (2-4min)Ask: If we say that someone is “creative” what do we mean? (Allow responses)Who do you think are the most creative people in this group? Who writes great stories? Who draws really well? Who has a vivid imagination? Who often comes up with different ideas to solve a problem? In what other ways can creativity be shown?Say: Humans are amazingly creative but no one has ever come close to the creativity of God as the Bible records it.

get into it Creation Script (10-12min)

Copy LT L1 Creation Drama (5 copies).Allocate parts. Choose a good reader with a loud voice to be ‘God’, then divide the rest into groups 1, 2, 3 and 4. Allow time to underline their part and become familiar with the script so the class can perform it together. Before they start practicing, give the following tips for a good dramatic result.• Underline the most important words in each sentence of your part and stress them.• Appoint a ‘conductor’ so you start and keep together• Practice reading “crisply” and clearly.• Hold your script just below your mouth and glance down while looking straight ahead.• Think about volume, and vary it for extra effect.Bring the groups together and perform the script.

The Genesis Account (8-10min)Read (or follow along with the Song 2) the creation account as recorded in Genesis 1. Discuss.

get into it Big Truths! (6-8min)

Ask the children to indicate with a show of hands:• Who had never heard this account of creation from the Bible before?• Who has questions about the way the Bible describes the beginning? (Suggest that they record their unanswered questions in the back of their magazine so that you can discuss them another time).Say: The Bible doesn’t give a scientific report of how the universe was formed. If it did many people wouldn’t understand it, certainly not people thousands of years ago. Instead it presents some big truths about the world, God, and people - truths that can affect our lives.Ask: What are those main ideas from this passage? (First there was God, God created the universe on purpose, in stages, God was very pleased with what he’d created). You might like to write key words on the board.

Extra Info (3-5min)Say: Much later in the Bible, one writer tells of something that happened before the world was created. Read Ephesians 1:4.Ask: What was God’s plan before the world began? (That we be God’s holy, innocent and loving people). Ask: What does that mean to you? (Accept responses and explain further if needed)Say: That’s still God’s plan for people. It’s the meaning of life, the reason we exist.Ask: What differences would we see in this world if we were all ‘holy, innocent and loving people who belonged to God’? (Accept responses).

teaching tipBe Consistent

At the beginning of each year the children will be testing out your boundaries. They will want to know that you are someone who is credible that they can trust. At this stage of the year it is important that you are consistent in what you do, which means following through on what you say you will do. Do not make threats (e.g I’ll send you to the principal) or promises that you are not able to keep, or are not willing to follow through on. Take the first month to establish the boundaries and a good rapport.

Additional tip for this lesson:

The topic of Adam & Eve, and Jesus dying may raise some questions about death. Don’t let that conversation dominate or continue. As human being we will all die physical deaths at some stage - what God offers us is eternal life in a spiritual sense.

the BIG ideaThe Bible explains how the world changed from being the way God made it due to choices that humans made and then how God continues to offer the opportunity to make better choices.

lesson AIMTo explore how the Bible helps us understand the state of the world and the consequences of wrong and right choices.

learning OUTCOMEThe children will be able to: Explorers say what went wrong in God’s perfect world and how does God fix it.Adventurers explain that the first humans made the wrong choice but God has a plan to fix it.Navigators say what impacted this world is no longer perfect. Voyagers discuss the consequences of wrong and good choices.

INSIDE the storyThere were two trees of note in the garden. One gave life; the second gave the power to know the difference between right and wrong. God wanted the people he made to eat freely from the tree that gave life but he told them not to eat fruit from the one that could give them the power to know the difference between right and wrong (CEV). There would be consequences for the choices they would make.

The issue was one of trust. Who were they going to believe, the God who created them or the snake who told them that God was holding out on them by saying they couldn’t eat from the second tree? We understand the snake to be a representation of Satan, God’s enemy. God left the man and woman free to choose but the choice had consequences and in choosing not to believe God, their close contact with God ended.

God’s love for the people he made didn’t stop when they decided not to trust him. They had to suffer the consequences of their choice, which meant they had to leave the garden and no longer had access to the life-giving tree and so would die, but God had a way to overcome the death that had taken hold on the world he created.

Refusing to trust God has had consequences for every person since then. The New Testament calls it sin and tells us that “Adam sinned, and sin brought death into the world. Now everyone has sinned...” (Romans 5:12) The fact is that every person, because of their sin, will die (Romans 6:23). Our sin is the reason we need a Saviour.

So what if a human could live a life fully believing and obeying God at every point? That person wouldn’t have to die. The power of death over the whole human race would be broken. But what if that person chose to die? Their death could be a substitute for people who really want to trust God but fail.

So Jesus, the Son of God, who was without sin, took the punishment (death) for the sins of humanity (Isaiah 53:6) when he died on the cross (another tree). Not only that, but Jesus’ death actually takes away our sin - so we make a choice to be in relationship with God as Adam and Eve were in the garden.

Use story telling pictures B1,4; C1-2,4-6,8,12-13; J5,8,27; T40,75 or Power Point L2 and outline to tell the story. Say: When God made the first man and woman, they lived in God’s fantastic garden. The garden had everything they needed and Adam and Eve could have what they needed for free. There was just one rule; they weren’t allowed to eat fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. That tree could let people know about good and bad, right and wrong. Only God knew about those things and that was good. There was a sneaky snake in the garden too. He came to Eve and said, “Did God say you’re not allowed to eat any fruit from the garden?” “No, just from the tree in the middle of the garden,” answered Eve. “If we even touch that tree we’ll die.”“No you won’t,” said the sneaky snake. “God knows if you eat that fruit you’ll know all about good and bad, like God.”Eve moved closer to the tree. The fruit looked beautiful. She liked the idea of knowing all about good and bad, like God. She reached out her hand, took some fruit and ate it. Adam was there too so she gave some to him and he ate it too. Straight away they realised things they hadn’t known before. They knew they had done the wrong thing. Then they heard God coming and quickly they tried to hide, but it was no good. God called out to them, “Adam, Eve where are you?” God knew what they had done. God told them what life would be like now that they had listened to the snake instead of God. They would have to leave the fantastic garden and now the things that were fun before were going to be really hard work and what was worse, their bodies would wear out and die. But God still loved them very much, and gave them some warm clothes to take with them. As Adam and Eve went from the garden, God knew he would do anything so that people would trust him again. He have a plan so that the people would know that he wanted them to be his friends again.Say: We all do things we shouldn’t sometimes, or don’t do things we really should. Even you and me – everyone. Well almost everyone...There was one person who always did the right thing and never did anything bad. Ask: Do you know who that person is? (Jesus)Say: Some people didn’t like Jesus, in fact they killed him, but because he had never done anything wrong and didn’t deserve to die, God brought him back to life and now he’s alive forever. That’s why Jesus was the only one who could make the world right again. It’s because of Jesus that we can be forgiven when we do bad things. It’s because of Jesus that people can be friends with God and live with him now and after they die. We’ll learn more about that in a few weeks.

go for it Prayer (2-3min)

Say: The Bible tells us that everyone makes bad choices, ones that hurt other people and even hurt us, but the good news is we can always say sorry. We can also tell God we are sorry and he will forgive us. Pray a sorry’ prayer. We can also thank God for caring so much to want to be our friend.

F: (very upset) Oh no, I’ve ruined the party for everyone. What have I done?

T: You know Fuzzie, when we make bad choices, we get hurt and it sometimes hurts other people too. I think you better go and tell your Mum what you’ve done so she has time to buy some more party food.

Discuss the ‘blame game’ that went on. i.e. who did the man blame? (The woman) Who did the woman blame? (The snake). Who was responsible for the choices they made? (They were)Discuss why this was a wrong/bad choice to make. (They could not longer live in God’s perfect world)Explain that Jesus came to show us God’s love, which meant dying for our bad choices. God now gives us the opportunity to choose to accept his invitation to live his way. Read 1 John 1:5-9 and discuss.

Reflection: Wrong Choice Brings Brokenness (3-4min)Say: It’s sad that things aren’t as they should be. Many have a sense within themselves that things aren’t right. Let’s listen to this story that has a different perspective to it.Read (or select some confident readers) LT L2 Choice That Leads to Brokenness

Drama ‘First Humans Make a Bad Choice’ (4-5min) Make 5 copies of LT L2 Humans Make a Bad Choice.Choose confident readers and give them a chance to read over the script beforehand.Discuss what options are available for us today?

If they have chosen a wrong piece they have to return it to the front, face down, and choose another, returning to their group each time till they complete it correctly. Project on board.Discuss how it felt to not get it right the first time.

get into it Bible Exploration (7-8min)

Hand out Bible or the weekly Bible print out (Power Tools) to look at Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-13, 22-23.Say: As we read this passage, I’d like you to consider these questions:What was the instruction about the middle tree? When God asked if they’d eaten the fruit, what did the man say? (Encourage them to answer in their own words rather than just read verbatim).Which phrase suggests that Adam blamed God as well as the woman? (The woman you put here with me). When God asked if they’d eaten the fruit, what did the woman say? (The snake tricked me).Ask: Who had to suffer the consequences? (Accept responses).Say: Perhaps this suggests that they were all to blame. Relationships were broken. There is a darkness in their hearts. However God does have a plan to restore the broken relationships.Read 1 John 1:1-9 to see God’s plan. What choices are we now given?

Discussion (4-5min)Ask children to share with their neighbour (or as a group): What’s the most important part of this story? Why?Continue: Some say ‘the world is broken’. Discuss: What do you think they mean by that comment? Invite some to share what they decided.Say: The Bible uses a word for this brokenness – the breakdown in relationships – with God, ourselves, other people, the world. It’s called sin. And it went all the way back to Adam and Eve. (See Romans 5:12-14 The Message. Bible Readings on Power Tools).Continue: Even though the world isn’t perfect, God still has a plan. What do you think it is? (Accept responses).Say: What choices do we now have?. What we understand the implications of Jesus dying and rising?

go for it So Whose Fault Is It? (3-4min)

Say: Some people blame God for the bad things that happen. They say that if God loved us he’d get rid of everything bad. But many of the bad things that happen like wars, poverty, global warming, are at least partly caused by people. If we’ve ever done anything to hurt or worry someone else, that would mean he’d have to get rid of us too! There are no easy answers to these things, but Christians believe that even though the world is no longer perfect, God is totally good and loving and helps his people through bad times.Continue: One day God will get rid of all the evil in the world, but in the meantime every person has the chance to choose good over evil, to help make this world a better place, working towards the way it was created to be. Welcome & Prayer (1-2min)Led by: Welcome the children. Pray (maybe have a child to do it) for your time together.

Praise Time (4-5min)Led by: Sing a song (Song 4-8) or another known song and project the words where all can see.

Broken! (4-5min) Led by: Show a broken toy or appliance. Explain that when it was first made there was nothing wrong with it and it worked well. Ask: How do you think it was broken? (Accept responses) Do you think it could be fixed? How? (Accept responses)Say: When God first made the world it was all good. Lots about creation is still good (some things about the toy are still good too) but this world is no longer the way God intended. It’s been spoilt, ruined, broken. The Bible tells us how that happened and God’s plan to fix it.

Fuzzie’s Bad Choice (2-3min)Led by: F= Fuzzie T= TeacherF: (still in house) Ohhhhhh, I’m so full!T: What do you mean Fuzzie?F: (enters) I’m full of food and cake and fairy

bread and I ate the lollies out of the lolly bags. I feel sick!

T: Fuzzie, you look terrible! Where did you get all that food from?

F: Well, from my birthday party this afternoon. It all looked so yummy, and I was so hungry and I know my Mum told me not to eat it, but I couldn’t wait... so I ate it.

T: Oh no Fuzzie. That wasn’t a very good choice to make.

F: You’re telling me. I think I’m going to be sick.T: No, it was the wrong thing to do Fuzzie.

F: I know, but I just couldn’t wait. It all looked so good! I just couldn’t resist the chocolate crackles.

T: Sure you are sick but worse than that your bad choice means that everyone will miss out Fuzzie. You have eaten all the food and now there’s none left for all your friends.

F: (very upset) Oh no, I’ve ruined the party for everyone. What have I done?

T: You know Fuzzie, when we make bad choices, we get hurt and it sometimes hurts other people too. I think you better go and tell your Mum what you’ve done so she has time to buy some more party food.

F: (exits) Good idea. Mum! Mum! Help!T: Fuzzie’s wrong choice reminds us of the very

first bad choice that people ever made. Let’s find out what the Bible says about that.

HOT teaching tipClassroom Management

Make sure all the children are listening to you before giving them an instruction or question. Set up a method for getting the children’s attention and explain what you will say, and what you expect them to do. Eg. “When I say ‘eyes to me’, put down your pens and look to me.” Practice this with the class so they know what you expect. Once the children know that this is how you will be getting their attention, stick to it and from then on, always wait until all the children are looking to you before going on. Another method that works well is to ask the classroom teacher what he/she does to get the children’s attention. This is a good strategy, because the children will already be familiar with it.

the BIG ideaWe won’t continue forever and neither will the world as we know it. Because of Jesus, we can be part of God’s future world where love and justice rule.

lesson AIMTo explore the biblical concept of heaven.

learning OUTCOMEThe children will be able to: Explorers recall something the Bible tells us about heaven and that it’s a wonderful place.Adventurers describe what the Bible says about heaven and what we can expect.Navigators compare the popular idea of heaven with the Bible’s and develop our own.Voyagers sense something of the world as it was created to be and to look forward to heaven.

INSIDE the storyFirst read the Bible passages comparing them with the popular view of heaven. Perhaps the children in your group will have an idea of heaven as a place with clouds, angels with harps and God with a long white beard on a golden throne. Any attempts we make, and indeed even the Bible descriptions, can only be attempts to describe the indescribable. Our understandings of heaven, and particularly the coming Kingdom of Heaven, are compounded by our inability to think outside of time.

There are so many things that the Bible doesn’t tell us about heaven so we should say that we don’t know rather than share our ideas as if they were fact. We know that heaven is the place where God rules and because of that it has been likened to the perfect world God created in the beginning where everything good was freely available and there were no barriers between people and God.

Revelation 21:1-27 records part of John’s vision of eternity in which God rules over a new heaven and a new earth where “there is no more death, suffering, crying or pain.” That’s what it is like when God rules completely. Everything is good; nothing bad can live there. That would mean that because no human (except Jesus) is totally good, people could not live in eternity with God. The good news of the Christian faith is that because of Jesus, God accepts those who trust him as totally good.

Jesus talked about his `father’s house’ as being a place with many rooms (John 14:2) and said that he was going to prepare a place for his friends there so they could be with him (John 14:2-3). Just as Jesus encouraged his disciples not to be worried in the face of death or the future but to trust God, we can say the same for the children we teach. When Jesus’ friends die, Jesus will take them to the place he has prepared, so they can be together. This is a wonderful picture of hope.

CAUTION: The classroom is not the place to get into discussions about hell and what happens there because children may become disturbed without anyone knowing and have no one to turn to for more information or comfort. Keep to the positive. See Power Tools for some insight into the Tough Questions and kids’ ideas about heaven.

In the New Testament a man named John tells us some things about a very special place that God wants everyone to go to.

Use B1; C4,6,8,12; D13,18; G1; J5; T40,75; Z17 or Power Point L3 and outline to tell the story.Say:,Let’s look back at what we talked about last lesson. In Genesis 1:1 we read: In the beginning was God And it goes on to say that God made a perfect world. Ask: What choice did Adam and Eve make? (They chose to not obey God by eating from the tree in the middle of the garden).Continue: Straight away they realised things they hadn’t known before. They knew they had done the wrong thing. They knew their friendship with God had been damaged. Ask: Did God know what they had done? (Yes) Continue: And so they had to leave the fantastic garden. God still loved them very much, and God had a plan so that the people would know that he wanted them to be his friends again.Say: We all make wrong choices, we all do things we shouldn’t sometimes, or don’t do things we really should. Jesus came to live on earth to teach us what God was really like and to show us how we can be friends with God again. Jesus was the only one who could make the world right again.Ask: Do you think this is the end of God’s plan for us? (Accept responses) Continue: We have a choice. We can choose to say sorry to God for not living the way he wants us to live But there’s more!!! The best is yet to come. Jesus taught us about what is next, a special place, where everything would be perfect again, just like it was, right in the beginning when God created everything.Say: In John 14:2-3 Jesus say that he is getting a place ready for those who are his followers.Ask: Do you know what the Bible calls this very special place? (Heaven). Continue: John, who was a follower of Jesus, wrote a number of books in the New Testament. When he was old he wrote a book called Revelation, telling us many things about Heaven but no one knows exactly what it will look like. Say: If God is looking after it – it can only be perfect! And we are all invited to join God there. It’s our choice – to accept God’s gift of love – to be a follower of Jesus. How great is that!

go for it Our Picture of Heaven (5-6min)

Say: It was hard for the disciple John to find words to describe what heaven is like. It is hard for us to imagine how wonderful heaven will be and what it will look like.”Provide paper and washable markers, pencils or crayons. Say: I want you to listen carefully as I read how John described heaven and then think about what that might look like to you and if you want - try and draw a picture of heaven. Remember - nobody really knows what heaven really looks like but it’s OK to have our own picture to think about.Using LT L3 Heaven Readings read Revelation 21: 1, 3-4, 11, 18, 21-26; 22:1-2 (Simplified for this age group)Conclude with a prayer thanking God for having such an amazing place to invite people to come to.

Invite a few children to come to the box and find something that they can use to clean the room and give them a few moments to ‘clean’ around the room, explaining what they are doing.Ask: Why do we often put in an extra effort to clean up before we have guests come to our place? Lesson Review (3-4min)Ask 5-10 review questions about the previous lessons to help the children see today’s story as part of one big story.

get into it The Apostle John’s Vision of Heaven (7-8min)

Say: The Apostle John (a follower of Jesus) had been sent to live alone on the island of Patmos, so he had lots of time to think and pray. John loved Jesus, and he knew that some day he would be with him. In John 14:2-3 Jesus had told John and the other disciples that he had a place that had lots of rooms and that he was going to prepare a place just for them. One day in the future he would take them to be with him forever.Ask: What place do you think Jesus was talking about? (Accept responses)Continue: One day, as John was thinking and praying, God allowed him to see visions or pictures of what heaven would look like. An angel helped John understand what he saw. The angel told John to write down everything he was seeing so others could know about heaven too.Say: Close your eyes and try and picture what John was writing about.Continue: Here are some of the things John wrote. “I saw a new heaven and a new earth. God was dwelling there, living among the people. There were no more tears, death, crying, or pain. Nothing was frightening or scary. The walls of heaven were very high and were made of a stone called jasper, and the city was pure gold. The foundation of the city under the walls was made of every kind of precious stone like sapphires and emeralds. These are valuable and expensive jewels, just like diamonds are valuable and costly. There were 12 gates into the city and each gate was made from one huge pearl! Also, a beautiful river was flowing through the city. It started at the throne where God and Jesus sat, and it went down into the middle of the city. The city did not need lights like the sun or the moon. God’s glory provided the light, and night never came!Ask: Hands up if you have a picture in your mind (imagination)? You don’t have to tell anyone.Continue: The angel told John that everything he had seen was true and would be just as he saw it. Jesus spoke to John and said, “Yes, I am coming soon!”This is good news! Jesus didn’t go to heaven just to get a place ready for us and to stay there. He is coming back to the earth! Among all the words he wrote, some of John’s last words were these: “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” John was ready to see Jesus!Say: Heaven is an amazing place - the highlight of God’s plan – it can only be perfect! And we are all invited to join God there. It’s our choice – to accept God’s gift of love – to be a follower of Jesus.
