• PROMOTING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT • SPRING 2014 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 1 Godfrey & Kahn Pays it Forward in Peanut Butter For the second year in a row, the Hunger Task Force faced a shortage of peanut butter donations in the Milwaukee area and set a community-wide goal of collecting 100,000 jars. Peggy Schulz, a Godfrey & Kahn employee who led the collection efforts last year, once again encouraged colleagues to “pay it forward in peanut butter”. She explained that “because of the nutritional density of this pantry staple, and its long shelf life, [peanut butter] has earned a prominent place in the fight against world hunger” and that “this is such a simple way to make a big difference in the lives of some of our neighbors, for whom putting a meal on the table three times a day is an enormous challenge.” At the halfway point of this year’s collection, the count of 88 jars represented more than half of the previous year’s total. In February, the firm successfully delivered 226 jars of peanut butter to the Hunger Task Force as well as a check for $300, representing employee cash donations to the Task Force’s cause. ©2014 Godfrey & Kahn, S.C. Retreatprior years’ retreat attendees on how to make the most of the retreat experience. A presentation on “Working with In-House Counsel” included shareholder Ellen Drought partnering with Heartland Advisors’ General Counsel, Vinita Paul, and gave an inside look at managing client relationships. Shareholder C.J. Wauters and associate Matt Wuest paired up with Sue Steberl, the firm’s Director of Marketing, to offer advice on career development, marketing and pro bono opportunities with the firm and in the community. Associates Maggie Cook and Alex Hansch presented a negotiation seminar offering tips for the new associates in both litigation and transactional practices. The ever popular “Navigating Godfrey & Kahn” session featured a panel of seasoned associates and new shareholders who offered an opportunity for candid discussions on how best to get things done in a law firm environment. Prior to the retreat, associates were encouraged to submit anonymous questions, and the answers were incorporated into the program. This allowed the associates to get direct, thoughtful answers about the firm’s culture and expectations, which should prove to be extremely beneficial in their career development.

The group also participated in a team building session at L’ecole de la Maison at The Osthoff Resort. They collaborated by putting together a number of delicious appetizers and learned a few cooking tips from Chef Scott Baker and his team. Following the event, the new associates were joined by attorneys on the firm’s Professional Development Committee for a wonderful dinner at the Paddock Club in downtown Elkhart Lake.

The new associate retreat is just one of the many educational opportunities for Godfrey & Kahn attorneys.

Employees Volunteer For Martin Luther King Jr. DayEach year Godfrey & Kahn looks to honor the memory of Dr. King by encouraging attorneys and staff to volunteer at various non-profit organizations throughout the metro Milwaukee area.

This past January, one of the non-profits Godfrey & Kahn assisted was Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee. On a cold winter afternoon, a group of firm employees assembled 440 stockboxes of food to help feed seniors facing hunger. A stockbox is a box of healthy foods that Hunger Task Force delivers to low-income seniors free of charge. Each box contains 16 nutritious items including rice, cereal, juice, beef stew, pasta and vegetables. Each month Hunger Task Force deliver’s nearly 10,000 boxes to needy seniors in the community, helping them stretch their food budgets. Stockboxes are an important first step in making sure that low-income seniors have monthly access to healthy and nutritious foods.

Hunger Task Force is Wisconsin’s premier anti-hunger organization and has been feeding Milwaukee since 1974. It’s locally founded, locally funded and locally run, with more than 5,000 people volunteering each year.

Employees Volunteer for Earth Day at the Urban Ecology Center

To celebrate Earth Day and bring awareness to green education and sustainable practices, more than 30 volunteers from Godfrey & Kahn worked together to complete various projects at the Urban Ecology Center.

Originally, the plan had been to duplicate 2013’s project of planting 900 woody shrubs along the Milwaukee River shore. However, due to spring flooding the project turned to a ravine area just northwest of the center. Erosion and misuse of the area by mountain bikes broke down the soil surrounding the trees. Mustard plants also invaded the vegetation. Volunteers combed the incline area, digging out the invasive plants, laying compost, spreading seed and unfolding protective netting.

In addition, another group of volunteers, fully equipped with repurposed boards, drills, nails, a level and a couple yards of gravel, climbed to the top of the ravine to build two bridges to aid foot traffic on the trails. Eroded make-shift railroad ties and tree trunks needed to be dug up prior to construction.

The group of volunteers pose after an afternoon of hard work at the Urban Ecology Center on Milwaukee’s Eastside.

Buckets of compost are handed down a hill and spread to prepare the ground for seeds & protective netting.

The ground was prepped for seeding by pulling mustard plants and spreading soil evenly on the hills.

A group of volunteers built a foot bridge which will make it easier for hikers to get around the uneven terrain.

Attorneys Climb the 47-story US Bank Building Stairs for a Good CauseOn March 23, 2014, the American Lung Association hosted its 5th Annual “Fight for Air Climb” at the US Bank building in downtown Milwaukee. Shareholder Chris Cahlamer serves on the American Lung Association’s Wisconsin Leadership Board and co-chaired the Climb. Godfrey & Kahn’s team climbed the 47 floors in the building—starting on stair one in the basement and finishing on stair 1,034 on the observation deck, which provided great views of the city and the lakefront. Proceeds from this fun and challenging event went to further the American Lung Association’s mission to fight for healthy lungs and healthy air.

Godfrey & Kahn served as a sponsor for the event and the firm climbers raised almost $11,000. More than 50 Godfrey & Kahn employees sponsored one or more of the climbers.

The fastest Godfrey & Kahn climber to the top was Carolina Rodriguez with a fantastic time of 8:48. Carolina finished 6th overall out of 302 climbers in her age group. Tom Bausch was the fastest male Godfrey & Kahn climber with a time of 11:06. Ellen Drought had the most improved climb time, dropping almost 2 minutes from her time last year.
