1 The Joyful Noise Newsletter Schoeneck Moravian Church March 2020 God Will Supply Our Need One of the daily devotionals we like to read to get closer to God is “Our Daily Bread.” Recently this devotional published a reading that gave us great inspiration and strength. It shared the story of a woman and her family that had just moved. After the move, life only seemed to get harder and harder with every turn. The woman wrote: “Physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted, I curled up in my recliner. Our family had followed Gods leading and had moved from California to Wisconsin. After we arrived, our car broke down and left us without a vehicle for two months. Meanwhile, my husbands limited mobility after an unexpected back surgery and my chronic pain complicated our unpacking. We uncovered costly problems with our new-to-us, old home. Our senior dog suffered with health issues. And though our new pup brought great joy, raising a furry ball of energy was far more work than anticipated. My attitude soured. How was I supposed to have unshakable faith while traveling on a bumpy road of hardships?” Maybe you have felt this way lately, finding yourself up against obstacles and hardship in your life. In the face of all these feelings and tears, the woman from the story above turned to the Lord in prayer. At times, doing this may seem like a hopeless exercise when all else seems to be failing. Can anything change? Can it possibly get better? But God has a way of reaching us when we look to him for strength. The woman shared that as she prayed, she was reminded of the psalmist David whose praise did not depend on his circumstances. God was speaking to her. He was reminding her that just as He was faithful to David, He was and would be faithful to her; just as David found strength in Him, so could she as well. David’s life is a textbook example of someone who had a pretty bad day, and then much worse. Early on in his life David found his life in danger. King Saul pursued David and tried to take David’s life several times (1 Samuel 19-26). Later, David’s own men blamed him for the loss of their family members, and they talked about stoning him (1 Samuel 30:4). Then, David’s son Absalom stole the throne from his father David, and David had to flee to protect his own life (2 Samuel 15:14). The man truly knew what he was talking about when he said, “a mighty army surrounds me” (Psalm 27:3). But in the face of fear and certain danger, David turned to God. The Lord was his rock when all else around him was changing and falling apart. He wrote, “Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge” (Psalm 16:1). David heard the rumors against his life all around him, yet he said, “But I trust in you, Lord. I say, ‘You are my God.’” (Psalm 31:14). One of the most striking things David said about the Lord was this: “Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup” (Psalm 16:5). For an

Israelite like David, one’s portion was another way of referring to one’s inheritance. God gave each of the tribes of Israel a “portion” of land to inherit when they entered the promised land (see Joshua 13-21). While some might have said their greatest treasure and security was their land and their wealth, David instead said, “Lord, you alone are my portion.” It was true in the good times and especially true in the bad. Everything would be taken from David — his land, his reputation, his family. But there was something that could never be taken from him, and that was his God. God still remained with David when all else was failing. When all else was against him, even his closest companions, the Bible gives us an everlasting testimony from David when it tells us, “But David found strength in the Lord his God” (1 Samuel 30:6). In the face of adversity and hardship in life, it can feel like there’s nothing left and no hope, but God offers to be our portion, to be our everything. Let us learn from the example of David who found all that he needed in the Lord. God bless you all, Pastors Garritt and Sanette

Worship the Lord with Us!

Worship Theme for Lent 2020:

Follow Christ’s Example to Love and Serve

If we were to ask you to recite the mission statement of Schoeneck Moravian Church,

could you do it? More importantly, would you be able to tell and show someone how to

live it out? Sunday mornings during Lent, we will be seeking these answers together as

we study the life and example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as seen in the Gospel

of John. At the end of each Scripture, we will ask the same question, “In this event, how

did Jesus love and serve all, and how can we do the same?” Join us as we look to the life

of Jesus to discover our mission and purpose in this world.

FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT AND HOLY COMMUNION — MARCH 1

This year, March 1 marks the first Sunday in Lent, the season which we set aside to

remember more passionately in our hearts the great sacrifice Jesus made to save us from

our sins and give us life both now and forever. On this first Sunday, we will celebrate Holy

Communion in remembrance of the life Jesus shared and the blood He shed for us.

MIDWEEK LENT SERVICES:

This year’s Midweek Lenten series is entitled “Taking Risks.” We will gather for worship

each week to reflect on the events in the last week of Jesus Christ on earth and consider

the risks and rewards of following him to the cross. Nazareth Moravian Church will host

weeks of Lent at 7:00 P.M., with a fellowship meal open to all at 6:00 P.M.

Dear Schoeneck Congregation: George and I know that we are truly blessed to belong to Schoeneck. We cannot thank each & everyone of you for all you have done in helping me to get on the road to recovery. We want to thank everyone for the many acts of Love & Kindness. We thank you for all the prayers, calls, cards, texts, visits, the most delicious and healing food, Woman’s Bible Study, and Jackie Frey’s beautiful prayer shawl. My deepest appreciation to Mim for leading our Visitation Meeting and for helping to mail my bulletins. A most grateful and very special thanks to Pastor Garritt & Sanette for their visits and all of the calls and prayers from Garritt. “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Psalms: 19:14

Christian Education… for all ages March has always reminded me of “starting new” or “turning the corner” from winter to spring! But it

also reminds me of new buds, plants and bushes starting to come to life and blooming, as does the season of Lent! Can you believe that we are in the Lent season already? We are preparing ourselves for the joyous resurrection of our Lord and Savior. It would be awesome if our Sunday School children and family could start something new for Lent. Instead of giving up something for Lent, how about learning something “NEW” for Lent? Just an idea!! How about learning the Books of the Bible?? One book Monday through Friday and then just reinforce them on Saturday. Then on Sunday as a Sunday School class they can recite them as a class to their Sunday School teacher. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy - week 1. Just a thought!

Our children’s classes will continue with their studies as scheduled for the month. And yes Drew, we will be studying “Jesus Walks on Water”, maybe you will get the answer you are looking for, and how “Jesus turns water into Wine”. Don’t forget about March 15th and our annual Birthday Social immediately after church. Sign up poster is outside the Sunday School office. We will be having a potluck lunch and a birthday cake for each month. Please sign up to bring either a cake or potluck dish. We will be having old time birthday party games and prizes. Come and join your Church family and celebrate your birthday! You are invited to sit at the table of your birth month, but not set in stone, you can join your children or friends at another table.

Greengs,

As we enter a new month, the third of 2020, I read an ar-cle which is near and dear to my heart for the past few weeks. I

would like to share, “The Art of the Nap.” By Marlainia Donato in Natural Awakenings.

The Art of the Nap: Unplugging From Life Without Apology

Children, four legged family members, Thanksgiving overeaters and the occasional squirrel on a branch have mastered an art

that eludes most of us, and they engage in it without a shred of guilt.

Defying our cultural habit of constantly being on the go and embracing the respite can be an ac-ve medita-on, an invita-on

to cul-vate uncommon s-llness. Answering the siren’s call of a nap might very well be one of the most beneficial acts of self

-care we can give ourselves. Both body and psyche crave chill-out -mes for good reasons. Using study subjects ranging from

NASA pilots to emergency room staff, curling up for a 20-30 minute siesta has been clinically proven to lower blood pressure,

boost immunity, improve motor skills and enhance job performance and crea-vity.

Power naps - the short but sweet kind - give us the opportunity to nourish the most neglected part of life, the inner life. Rest

-fueled “me--me” can be a daily ritual punctuated with both prac-cal and aesthe-c inspira-on. Choosing a spot drenched in

invi-ng natural light or close-curtained tranquility and reserving a favorite pillow, chair, or luxurious coverlet can usher in

blissful -me-out. Adding the presence of aromatherapeu-c essen-als oils like lavender, roman chamomile or tangerine or a

vase of fresh cut flowers can signal the ever-diligent nervous system to cut back on over-me. Dropping down into

unhurriedness like an anchor into port can prompt deeper and longer breaths and offer us a shameless chance to invest in

quality daydreaming. Playing recorded sounds from nature- ocean waves, soC rain or gentle wind in the trees- can set the

stage for a sa-sfying nap. Invi-ng the resident cat or pooch for a sleep-spell can also effect release of beneficial endorphins.

Scheduling a nap into the day like any other appointment not only ensures follow through, but presents a succulent slice of

something to look forward to. PuDng the computer on sleep mode and turning off phone signals the brain that it’s -me to

recharge. Social media interac-on and phone chats can wait. The pursuit of well-being does not need explana-on, apology

or, most of all, guilt.

Pleasant dreams!

Our next Blood pressure screening will be: March 15th

aCer each service.

Spring is coming soon! Yeah!!!
