Many of you reading this have probably had the opportunity to hear about Jesus – how He saved us, loves us and wants us to do amazing things for Him. One of the amazing things He wants us to do is to tell as many people about Jesus as possible. He wants us to tell family members, neighbors, friends and people all over the world.

William Carey(1761-1843) India

William Carey was an English missionary and Baptist minister who helped to found the Baptist Missionary Society. Known as the “Father of Modern Missions,” Carey was a shoemaker who loved to preach and tell others about the Gospel. He learned many languages, which would help later in his missions life when William translated the Bible into Bengali and Sanskrit. Traveling with his wife and four children, Carey decided to become an official missionary to India and spent many years of his life there. Although it was very difficult, William Carey knew that in order to “expect great things from God” he needed to “attempt great things for God.”

Adoniram Judson(1788-1850) Burma

At the age of 25, Adoniram Judson became one of American’s first foreign missionaries when he traveled to the country of Burma. Spending 45 years there, Judson was falsely suspected of spying during the war between the United Kingdom and Burma and was imprisoned for 17 months. Well-remembered for his expert work in translating and church-planting, Adoniram Judson is honored with multiple organizations named after him including churches, a feast day, a US liberty ship, and an American University.

David Livingstone(1813-1873) Africa

David Livingstone’s official role as that of a Medical Missionary led him into Africa where he traveled from one coast of the continent to the other. Spending over thirty years in Africa, the doctor, explorer, discoverer, philanthropist, and missionary studied as much as he could about Africa’s plants, animals, diseases, and more. With each new travel, Livingstone told the natives about Jesus and continued his work unselfishly until his death in 1874. Infamous around the world, Livingstone is considered a missionary hero and is buried in Westminster Abbey amongst kings, queens, philosophers, and dignitaries.

Hudson Taylor(1832-1905) China

Hudson Taylor was just a young boy living in England when God called him into missions. Hudson became a doctor and spent his days helping people who couldn’t afford medical care. Traveling to China when he was 21 years old, Hudson spent the next 51 years as a missionary there. Although Hudson faced many trials – once his home was burned and another time he was robbed of all his possessions – he stayed faithful to his missions work and soon there were enough missionaries to help him share Jesus with all 18 provinces of China.

AMY CARMICHAEL(1867-1951) India

After hearing Hudson Taylor preach about the importance of missions work, Amy obeyed God’s prompting in her life and became a missionary to India. While there, she opened an orphanage (Dohnavur Fellowship) and cared for many children. In her 55 years in India, Amy wrote several books and inspired people of all ages, including Jim Elliot who would later become a missionary to Ecuador. Amy is best remembered for her love and care of over 1000 neglected and suffering children.

William Borden was a rich young scholar at Yale University. He knew he wanted to help people by telling them about the love of Jesus and decided to start while in school. Starting a Bible study on campus and helping the poor who lived in his city, William talked about Jesus to any of his classmates who would listen. Determined to travel to China for his missions work, Borden first traveled to Egypt to study the Arabic language. Sadly, he became very ill and died before ever reaching China. Giving away his wealth and his life, Borden never backed down from following Jesus.

Jim Elliot(1927-1956) Ecuador

Jim Elliot, along with his friends Ed McCully, Roger Youderian, Pete Fleming, and Nate Saint, traveled to preach God’s Word where it had never been heard. The Huaorani people (also known as Aucans) did not like outsiders, and although they seemed friendly at first to Jim Elliot and his friends, they ended up ambushing and killing them when their plane landed.

For Elliot, his belief and faith in God was more important than his own life. He wrote in a page in his journal, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” Jim Elliot’s life and story have impacted and influenced missionaries all over the world. His wife, Elisabeth, and others continued the missions work in Ecuador and saw many of the Huaorani people commit their life to Christ.
