This program is called Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, and we use the acronym RCIA to refer to it. I want to comment on this program because during this time of Lent and especially in the Easter Vigil we are going to see the people who belong to this program participate in a very direct way. This program has a very interesting origin. In the beginning of Christianity those who converted to this religion were adults and received special instruction before being baptized and receiving the sacraments. Those who were preparing to be baptized were called “catechumens” because they were receiving “catechesis,” that is, Christian teaching. With time, the baptism and the sacraments were given at an earlier age so as not to deprive the children of grace by making them wait until they were adults. And then the preparation for the reception of the sacraments in adults became less necessary since the great majority of Christians received the sacraments as children. Even now, the sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation, and first communion) are generally received when we are children. However, the RCIA program has not ceased to exist, because there has always been a need to prepare some adults to receive the sacraments. Here in our parish there are many people who do not have some of the sacra- ments. Maybe they are not baptized. Or they may be baptized, but they lack one of the other sacraments such as confirmation or first communion. It is very sad to see couples who live together and cannot get married because they lack some or some of the sacraments. This program exists precisely for these cases. RCIA, however, is not to fulfill the requirement of receiving the sacraments as if it were a list of pending things. The purpose of the program is to provide the necessary catechesis for adults to be instructed in the Catholic faith and to embrace it consciously. That is, they make an option for Christ, and that is why they want to receive the sacraments. This Lent, our brothers and sisters who are participating in this program will in- tensify their formation and their participation in some ceremonies in our parish. And finally, some of them, those who are prepared, will receive the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil next March. Please pray for them. Hopefully, next year we will have a larger group of people who want to embrace the faith and receive the sacraments of initiation. Sin embargo, el programa de RICA no ha dejado de existir, porque siempre ha habido la necesidad de preparar a algunos adultos para que reciban los sacramentos. Aquí en nuestra parroquia hay muchas personas que no tienen algunos de los sacramentos. Quizás no estén ni bautizadas. O puede ser que estén bautiza- das, pero les falte alguno de los otros sacramentos como la confirmación o la primera comunión. Es muy triste ver parejas que viven juntas y no se pueden casar porque les falta alguno o algunos de los sacramentos. Y este programa existe precisamente para estos casos. No es para cumplir el requisito de recibir los sacramentos como si fuera una lista de cosas pendientes. El programa tiene como propósito proporcionar la catequesis necesaria para que las personas adultas se instruyan en la fe católica y la puedan abrazar conscientemente. Es decir, que hagan una opción por Cristo, y por eso quieren recibir los sacramen- tos. Esta cuaresma nuestros hermanos y hermanas que están participando en este programa van a intensificar su formación y su participación en algunas ceremonias en nuestra parroquia. Y finalmente algunos de ellos, los que estén preparados, van a recibir los sacramentos de iniciación en la Vigilia Pascual el próximo mes de marzo. Oremos por estos hermanos. Y ojalá y que para el próximo año tengamos un grupo más numeroso de personas que quieran abrazar la fe y recibir los sacra- mentos de iniciación.
