And this is how he did it: First God made a man. He shaped the man out of dirt. Then God breathed air into his nostrils. And the man became alive. His name was Adam. God made Adam perfect. Adam did not do wrong things. He did not sin. God loved Adam very much. He gave Adam a very wonderful garden as his home. Many beautiful trees grew there. A river flowed through the garden to keep it watered. God told Adam, “It is your job to care for this beautiful garden.” God had more planned for Adam. He knew that Adam had no other person like him. God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make him a helper.” God brought all of the animals to Adam so that he could name them. Adam named each one, but he could not find anyone like him. There were lots of animals, but there were no other people. So God made Adam fall into a deep sleep. While Adam slept, God took a rib from Adam’s side. Then God closed up that place in Adam’s body. God took the rib and made a woman from it. God made the woman perfect. She did not do wrong things. She did not sin. When Adam woke up, God brought this woman to him. Adam was very happy. He said, “She is from my own body. She will be called ‘woman.’” The woman was named Eve. She became Adam’s wife. Adam and Eve loved each other, and they especially loved God. God talked to them often in the garden. What a wonderful life God gave to his first two people!

God created the world and everything in itin six days. On the sixth day, God created all theland animals. On that day he also made the firstpeople. Since people were God’s most importantcreation, he made them in a special way.

First God formed a man’s body out of dirtfrom the ground. Then God breathed into theman’s nostrils, and the man became a livingperson. God made the man perfect and holyand gave him a soul. He named the man Adam.

God planted a beautiful garden in aplace he called Eden. He filled it with all kindsof trees. Some of the trees grew fruit that wasgood to eat. Two special trees grew in themiddle of the garden. One was the tree of life. The other was the tree of the knowledge ofgood and evil.

God gave this garden to Adam for hishome. Adam was to work in the garden and takecare of it. God told Adam, “You may eat the fruitfrom any tree in the garden. But you must noteat from the tree of the knowledge of good andevil. If you eat from this tree, you will die.”

Then God brought the animals he hadmade to Adam. God wanted Adam to give themnames. So Adam named each animal. But as theanimals passed by, Adam saw that there was nocreature like him. There was no other person forhim to talk with or love.

God said, “It isn’t good for Adam to bealone. I will make a helper for him.” So Godmade Adam fall into a deep sleep. Then he took arib from Adam’s body. Out of this rib, God madea woman. He brought the woman to Adam, andshe became his wife. Adam called his wife Eve.

God blessed Adam and Eve and told themto have many children. They happily made theirhome together in the beautiful Garden of Eden.

1The Creation of Man and Woman Genesis 1:28; 2:7-9,15-24

God created the entire universe in six days.On the sixth day, God created the land animals. He also created the first people.

God created the first man in a very specialway. First he took some dirt from the groundand molded it into the shape he wanted theman’s body to have. Then God blew the breathof life into the man’s nostrils, and he became aliving person with an immortal soul. God namedhim Adam.

God placed Adam into a beautiful, parklikegarden that he had made especially for him. Thisgarden, called Eden, was to be Adam’s home. Godexpected Adam to work in the garden and takecare of the many trees and plants that grew there.

Some of the trees in this huge garden werenice to look at. Others were filled with good-tasting fruit. Two special trees grew in the centerof the garden. One was the tree of life. The otherwas the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

God told Adam, “You arefree to eat from any tree in thegarden, but you must not eat fromthe tree of the knowledge of goodand evil. If you do, you will die.”

God brought all the animalsand birds to Adam so that hecould see them and give each ofthem a name. As Adam named allthe creatures, he also realized thatthere was no creature like himselfamong them. There was no onefor him to talk to or to share hiswork with, no one to keep himcompany or for him to love.

God said, “It’s not good forthe man to be alone. I will make ahelper for him.” So God createdanother person to be a companion

for Adam. He caused Adam to fall into a deepsleep. Then he took a rib out of Adam’s body, andfrom it he made a woman. God brought her toAdam to be his wife. When Adam saw her, hesaid, “This is now my wife. I will call her‘woman’ because she was taken out of man.” Inthis way God started the first family on earth.

God blessed Adam and Eve and told them,“You will have many children. From your familywill come so many children that someday theywill fill the whole earth. And every living thingon earth will serve you.”

How happy Adam and Eve were in theirbeautiful home! They trusted God. They knewGod loved them, and they loved God and eachother. There was no sin in their world.Everything was perfect.

Just as God blessed the firstpeople on earth, Godblesses us with life, homes, work, and families. And totop it off, he gives us whatwe need most—forgivenessof sins through Christ andeternal life in heaven!

1. Help your child list the different kinds ofwork he or she does (schoolwork, chores athome, volunteer work, practicing music or asport). Talk about ways that work is a blessingfrom God (helps us learn, teaches responsibility, helps others, keeps our minds and bodies active).

2. As a family, evaluate the following motivationsfor doing work:

• Saying, “If you do a good job raking theleaves, we’ll go out for lunch.”

• Saying, “I’ll give you a dollar every timeyou get the mail for our elderlyneighbor.”

• Saying, “Let’s show our love for Jesus byhelping each other get the house clean.”

Bribes and rewards often result in quick obediencefor the wrong reasons. Motivating out of love forthe Savior may take more effort, but it has longer-lasting results.

Dear God of power, wisdom, and love, thank youfor blessing us with life, a home, work, and afamily. Help us show our thankfulness by doingour work cheerfully, out of love for you. Amen.

Work Comes From God Before the fall into sin, the work may havebeen difficult, but it was satisfying, like when you play a really hard gameof basketball and feel exhausted—but great—afterwards. The work wasnever something to complain about. Adam and Eve’s work gave them joy,

meaning, a purpose for living, and a way to glorify God. Work today is somewhat different. Write in wordsto complete the two word webs.
