Visitors may be shocked by the wild time waiting for them at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center. Nestled in the heart of the revitalized Little Rock River Market District, the 16,230-square foot center tells the story of conservation and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s role in bringing back some of our most treasured natural resources. The center has something for everyone, whether they are an outdoors enthusiast, an urbanite or a traveler in town for a convention or expedition to the nearby William J. Clinton Presidential Center. Interact with nature An interactive state map highlights Arkansas’s natural resources using a laser projection system. Three large cases feature the AGFC’s three major divisions – Law Enforcement, Wildlife Management and Fisheries – with touch-screen displays to tell their stories. A dynamic, 10-minute movie tells the story of conservation in The Natural State. After the show, visitors will pass through an old trapper’s cabin adorned with furs and the rustic tools used by settlers. Go with the flow Much like the Arkansas River flowing just north of the center, an expansive aquarium teems with aquatic wildlife. Visitors can follow the water as it passes through five aquatic habitats found in Arkansas – a mountain spring, the main channel of a large river, a cypress swamp, a delta marsh and a bottomland hardwood forest. Each section is filled with fish found in each habitat. A watchable wildlife lounge offers a relaxing area to read and an excellent view of the center’s bird-feeding station and the Arkansas River. Visitors also can take a walk through the Big Woods exhibit and search for the lifelike animal mounts hidden in the swampy setting. Take it outside The walkway to the center’s north connects to the expansive Arkansas River Trail, a proposed 24-mile cooperative pedestrian and bicycle trail spanning both sides of the river. The trail offers many watchable wildlife activities in an urban setting. Basking water turtles, butterflies and wading birds are common near the river. The center also has beds of native plants to attract birds and small mammals. On your way out, stop by the gift shop and pick up a nature-inspired souvenir or field guide. The nature center has an active volunteer program and there are numerous volunteer opportunities. Call for a volunteer application or more information. The center also provides a wide range of educational programs. For more information, contact the education staff or visit our Web site: www.centralarkansasnaturecenter.com.
