Gov. Nathan Deal signs transportation bill that will raise gas price 6 cents a gallon, put $5 tax on hotel roomsWalter C. Jones reports that Gov. Nathan Deal hailed a transportation-funding bill Monday as having a broad effect as he signed it into law. “It will have a positive impact on every portion of our state as it makes Georgians safer and more efficient,” he said. The bill will boost the tax on gasoline by 6 cents per gallon starting in July, an amount to be adjusted every time vehicle mileage improves. It will also add a $5 nightly tax on hotel rooms, levy a $200 annual tax on electric vehicles and remove the $5,000 tax credit for buying one.

Georgia among worst states for working momsPhil W. Hudson reports that although women now comprise roughly half of the American workforce, they still earn about three-quarters as much as men do and have far less upward mobility, as evidenced by the fact that less than 5 percent of Fortune 500 companies have female chief executives, according to WalletHub.com. But, what makes those statistics even more disturbing for Georgia mothers is that the Peach State was ranked as the No. 7 worst state for working moms, according to WalletHub.

Bio and Archives May 6, 2015Plastic products advertised as biodegradable have recently emerged, but they sound almost too good to be true. Scientists have now found out that, at least for now, consumers have good reason to doubt these claims. In a new study appearing in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology, plastics

designed to degrade didn’t break down any faster than their more conventional counterparts.Susan Selke, Rafael Auras and colleagues note that to deal with our plastic waste problem, many countries and local governments have adopted laws, such as single-use bag bans, to deal with increasing amounts of trash. Most plastics end up in landfills, where they sit for decades or longer without breaking down. More recently,

some manufacturers now make plastics with additives that are supposed to make the products biodegradable. But the effectiveness of this approach has been unclear. Selke and Auras’s team wanted to see if the additives were working under typical disposal conditions.The researchers evaluated plastics containing five different compounds designed to encourage breakdown. They found no evidence that the additives enhanced biodegradability in compost or under simulated landfill conditions, or when buried in soil for three years. They say their findings have wide-ranging implications for consumers, the environment and the companies that make these products.The authors acknowledge funding from the Center for Packaging Innovation and Sustainability at Michigan State University.(Canada Free

Perhaps the deepest wounds any of us carry are the wounds that come from being betrayed. They leave a bitter taste in our mouths and a desire

for revenge in our minds and hearts. When a trusted friend turns out to be an enemy, especially without cause, it fractures - sometimes forever - what was expected to be a confidant for life. Trust turns into resentment and love seeks revenge. Anger turns into grief and a large hole grows in our heart. We question what to do or where to go for help. What is the best course of action for us to take? Spread rumors about “the enemy?” Seek ways to destroy that person’s reputation? Allow depression to overtake us and hide from the light of day? It’s too difficult to remain calm when our insides churn. When David was being destroyed by those who he thought were his closest friends and advisors, he turned to God. He did not ask God to forgive them. Nor did he ask God to convict them and make amends to him. No! He asked God to arm Himself with a shield, buckler and spear and go after them. And then he asked God to speak to him, bring a peace to his heart and assure him that “I God, am your salvation!” He was anxious but trusted in God. David had done no wrong in this instance. He deserved to be vindicated. He was aware, however, that if he took things into his own hands it might have been disastrous if he lost control of his anger. So, in his wisdom, he asked God to vindicate him. And God did!

I found this timely, because today I was in a store that sells sunglasses, and only sunglasses. A young lady walks over to me and asks, “what brings you in today?”. I looked at her, and said, I’m interested in buying a refrigerator. She didn’t quite know how to respond. Am I getting to be that age? #I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can’t afford one. So I’m wearing my garage door opener.

#I also made a cover for my hearing aid and now I have what they call “blue teeth”, I think.#I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans!

#I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is when you still have something on the ball but you are just too tired to bounce it.

Directions 1. Heat oven to 425° F. Rinse the peaches and pat dry. Do not peel them. Cut each one in half, discarding the pits. Slice the fruit into wedges about 1/2 inch thick. In a large bowl, combine the flour, ginger, nutmeg, and 3/4 cup of the sugar. Add the peaches and toss.

2. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Arrange the peaches in the center of the dough. Fold the outer edge of the dough over the peaches, allowing it to fall into pleats, leaving the center of the tart uncovered. 3. Lightly brush the dough with water and sprinkle with the remaining sugar. Bake until golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Reduce oven to 350° F and bake until the juices bubble and thicken, about 30 minutes more. Let cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
