The year was 1991, theseason summer. In a small,rustic house of worship 30miles south of Loveland re-ferred to as the Rinn Church,a couple was saying theirwedding vows to a housepacked full of witnesses.

A new, folksy, countrysinger had just begun the as-cent of his illustrious career,so it was with delighted sur-prise when at the end of theceremony, the live guitaristbegan plucking out a versionof one of Lyle Lovett’s ratherfrivolous and unconvention-al songs, and Cindy andSteve, newly married,sashayed back down theaisle to the humorous lyricsof “Sh e ’s No Lady, She’s MyWi f e. ”

Since then, Lovett has be-come a household name inAmerica, his works over thepast few decades earninghim four Grammy awardsfrom 13 albums.

By blending blues, country,rock, gospel, big band swing,

jazz and folk, his music is al-ways fresh and resists beingpigeonholed into any partic-ular genre.

Lovett will be returning toColorado to perform Friday,Oct. 9, at the Union ColonyCivic Center in Greeley withlongtime friend and frequenttour mate John Hiatt. Thetwo have been touring to-gether in one fashion or an-other since 1989. This tourhighlights their acousticaltalents and storytellingprowess. They will alternatesongs from throughout theircareers as well as promotethe release of Lovett’s newalbum, “Natural Forces,” setfor release Oct. 20.

According to Andrew Se-gal, marketing director forUnion Colony Civic Center,L ove t t ’s show will be a richexper ience.

“It ’s really going to be anacoustic show,” said Segal.“They will play a lot of indi-vidual songs from each one’srepertoire, with a lot of story-telling. They will be interact-ing a lot with one anotherand just having fun.”

When talking about alter-native rockers Marcy Play-ground, a certain song titlealways seems to present it-self.

“‘Sex and Candy’ was notjust our biggest hit, it wasone of the industry’s biggesth i t s, ” said Dylan Keefe,bassist for the New YorkCity-based threesome.

Although the song was re-leased more than 10 yearsago on the band’s first al-bum, the guys never gettired of hearing about it.

“For us to ignore it as aclassic would be ridicu-l o u s, ” said Keefe. “We ownthat song and play it theway we hear it now, just likeall the other songs.”

But, as fans of MarcyPlayground know, there ismuch more to the bandthan their first radio hit.

Currently on the roadpromoting their recently re-leased album “LeavingWonderland … In a Fit ofRa g e, ” Keefe describes thegroup as the same sloppy,rock-driven trio as before —only older.

Songs such as “Black -b i rd , ” “Thank You” and“Gin and Money” present arefreshing yet classic MarcyPlayground sound withlyrics that show a more per-sonal side to frontman JohnWoz n i a k .

“This record started outwith Woz (Wozniak) comingback to writing as a sort of

therapy after a difficult timein his life,” explained Keefe.“It ’s a very personal album.This one has an acceptanceof life’s hardships and limi-tations that the others canappear to scoff at.”

The band decided to self-release the new albumwithout the help of a big,fancy record label — a taskthat can be challenging,Keefe says.

“We released this albumourselves, so we don’t havea big record label to throw abunch of money in all di-rections for us and see whatsticks. This is a pop and popshop, and we have to besmart and deliberate abouthow we get the word out.It ’s much harder, and ittakes a lot longer.”

Aside from their currenttour, which Keefe describesas the most fun the guyshave had playing as a band,Marcy Playground is gear-ing up to release a raritiesalbum in late February thatwill include tunes that nev-er appeared on past recordsas well as a DVD of a liveconcert video the band shotin Toronto last month to bereleased sometime nextye a r.

Mario the Peddlerbenefits Angel House

Award-winning author, social ac-tivist and entertainer Tony Botta-garo will perform as Mario the Ped-dler on Oct. 16 at the Rialto Theaterin downtown Loveland.

The show is based on his best-selling novel, “The Poet, The Count,and The Peddler.” His character isan immigrant who hawks courageand hope through whimsical story-telling, using the power of imagina-tion to inspire change.

Bottagaro also will do a specialpost-show talk, “The Time of Wait-ing is Over,” including a question-and-answer session.

The show benefits Angel House, aLoveland nonprofit that works withlocal churches to provide meals,shelter and mentoring for homelessfamilies. Angel House provides op-portunities for these families to getback on their feet and become self-s u f f i c i e nt .

Carousel Dinner The-a t re ’s production of “Re n t ”is close to perfect, its castand crew serving up a per-formance as brightly pol-ished and sophisticated asany Broadway production.

It ’s all there — the harsh-ness of life in New York’sEast Village, the hopeless-ness of drug addiction andHIV, the loneliness of thehomeless, the tragedy ofdeath. And yet, in spite ofthe chill this story brings, aglow of hope and loveflickers within the charac-t e r s.

The 14 actors on stageeach bring truth to thisstory of survival in an em-brace of promise.

Mark Lively is Mark, thenarrator. With video cam-era constantly in hand, hedocuments the story withpassion, holding the en-semble together in a visualproject. Lively uses his finevoice to weave together in-dividual storylines, verymuch the director of thisintimate documentary.

Brett Travis is perfectlycast as Roger, the dreamer

who longs to start life anewin sunny Santa Fe, despitebeing penniless and felledby AIDS. This is Travis’dream role, and he thor-oughly convinces the audi-ence of this as he showsRo g e r ’s struggles to writethe perfect song, a testimo-ny to his life. Travis’ vo i c ebeautifully captures thepoignancy and an underly-ing sweetness in Roger’sc h a ra c t e r.

Kaitlin Monte takes onthe multi-faceted role ofMimi, drug-addicted and avictim of AIDS. Sassy andirreverent, Mimi finds so-lace with Roger, but con-tinually strays back to herold ways. As a dancer andsinger, Monte fits into therole of Mimi as tightly asthe shimmering form-fit-ting “hot pants” she wears.She is both the temptressand lost child.

Tyler Lee, a Carousel reg-ular, finally gets a muchdeserved starring role asAngel, the cross dresserwith the proverbial heart ofgold. Lee shines bright asAngel, sprinkling hope andhumor among this band ofsurvivors. He also nicelydefines the tender relation-

ship between him andTom Collins.

Kenny Moten makes anotable first appearance atCarousel as Collins, whowanders into the circle,broken and injured. He’seasy and confident in hisrole and possesses a warm,rich voice that nicely por-trays his character. He andLee bring a reality toCollins and Angel’s part-n e r s h i p.

Sarah Armstrong, asMaureen, elicits heartylaughs with her over-the-top rendition of “Over theMo o n . ” It ’s a real kick andArmstrong milks it for allit’s worth, pardon the pun.Armstrong shows her dra-matic side as well, in sever-al numbers with her on-stage lover, Joanne, playedby Ryane Nicole Studivant.

St u d i va n t ’s lusty voicedefines her in-your-facecharacter, especially in“We ’re Okay.” Both womenbring fire to their duet,“Take Me or Leave Me.”

Donald Jones, as Benny,is perfectly cast as thelandlord who forgets hisearlier life scraping togeth-er rent money with room-mates Roger and Mark.

Genise Deal’s showstop-per solo is a wonderful giftto the audience, as is Mic-ah Mim’s.

Supporting cast mem-bers Drew Danver, Kyle Ac-cord, Michael Lasris andSarah Ledtke add color andsubstance to the musical.

The Thompson Valley ArtLeague’s Annual Fall FestivalFine Art Show, now underway at the Lincoln Gallery, isrecognizing the late Joyce C.Musslewhite with a memori-al award in her name.

Artist Dena Kirk receivedthe award for her oil painting“Te x t i n g , ” which depicts ateenage girl texting on hercell phone.

“Te x t i n g ” was painted froma photograph that Kirk tookof her daughter, Emily, sittingat the Loveland Muse-um/Gallery “doing what shedoes a lot of, which is tex-ting,” Kirk said.

Kirk had the opportunityto meet Musslewhite a cou-ple of times.

“She was the neatest, neat-est lady and did amazing art-w o rk , ” Kirk said.

The Joyce C. MusslewhiteMemorial Award was createdin response to monetary do-nations received by the artleague when Musslewhite, afounder of the league andactive member since 1964,died in March. Musslewhitewas a longtime educator inthe Thompson School Dis-trict and was “very wellk n ow n ” in the community,said Jeff Brooks, head of op-

erations for Art League andLincoln Gallery.

Musslewhite was one ofthe originators of Art in thePark in 1964, an event thathas continued annually andis the league’s main sourceof funding.

“Joyce was an integral partof (the league) and loved herar t,” said Brooks.

Musslewhite was interest-ed in a variety of mediumsand would do everythingfrom wood carvings of birdsto sculptures to painting andpotter y.

Retired educator and localartist Vicky Russell judgedthe art show. In addition tothe memorial award, Russellselected first-, second- andthird-prize winners in sevencategories including water-color, oil, acrylic, photogra-phy, mixed media, three-di-mensional and pastel alongwith several honorable men-tion awards. Ribbons andprize money will be award-ed.

Thompson Valley ArtLeague has 83 members andholds two member shows ayear, the first being in Febru-ar y.
