A musicalseason

By Lauren RearickFor the Herald-Standard

Spotlights are shining, costumes are pressed and dance numbers are ready to dazzle as local students take to area stages for their spring musicals.

From a man-eating plant with diabolic plans to well-known classics, there’s some-thing for everyone this year.

Carmichaels Area High School

What: “The Pajama Game”When: 7 p.m. Saturday,

Admission: $8 adults, $5 students and senior citizens

is sure the exploration into a workplace romance be-tween two members of the Sleep-Tite pajama factory during a time of business up-heaval is going to leave “you in stitches” at the school’s performance of the romantic musical comedy “The Pajama Game.”

“Many people may re-member the Doris Day movie version of this show,” Walker said. “It is a musical comedy with familiar songs like ‘Steam Heat’ and ‘Hey There’”.

Incorporating choreogra-phy from Susan Zalar and

orchestra direction from Ja-son Baily, the cast of mainly underclassmen is looking to impress as they take their first forays into musical theater.

“After having graduated several stronger performers the past few years, our cast consists of many underclass-men with little experience in a lead role,” Walker said. “This show provides opportu-nities for any students in our cast to being their journey into the spotlight.”

California Area High School

What: “Zombie Prom”When: 7 p.m. Thursday and

March 1 and 2Where: California Area

High School auditoriumAdmission: $8, available

in the library during school hours and in the auditorium after school hours

California Area High School wanted the unexpected for their spring production, and according to director Clau-dia Bennett, they found it in “Zombie Prom.”

“We spent several inde-cisive months mulling over ideas for our 2013 production. None stood out,” Bennett said. “The consensus was that we wanted something fun — dif-ferent — and not old.”

The musical comedy fol-lows the young love of trans-fer student Jonny Warner (Zac Parocai) and Toffee

(Bianca Forsythe). Follow-ing the pair’s unexpected breakup, Warner’s unraveling causes a bike accident respon-sible for a level three nuclear disaster.

Warner returns from a deep-sea grave, reformed and ready to attend class, take his girl to the prom and graduate, but will his principal (Kim-berly Sears) allow consider-ing zombies aren’t welcome? Magazine reporter Eddie Fla-grante (Ben Thomas) is ready to uncover some interesting research on zombie civil rights.

Joined by artistic director Bill Bennett and Adam Sutch, along with musical director Michael Meketa, choreogra-pher Maria Gismondi, cos-tumer designer Barb Gismon-di and art designer Joseph Seaman, attendees are trans-ported to the wacky world of Enrico Fermi High.

“You will feel happy,” Ben-nett said. “California sustains its reputation for quality pro-ductions featuring excellent

costuming and imaginative sets and staging. If you miss our show, you’ll probably need to travel to catch it.

“Attend opening night, because you will want to see Zombie Prom again,” Bennett said.

Brownsville Area High School

Where: Brownsville Area High School auditorium

Admission: $8 adults, $5 students

Brownsville High School continues the trend of roman-tic comedies for spring with their musical adaptation of a well-known film, “The Wed-ding Singer.”

Directed by Tricia Rohlf,

the cast takes audiences back to the 1980s where aspiring rock star/wedding singer Rob-bie Hart (Jacob Murray) is desperate to prove his love for waitress Julia Sullivan (Kara Rohlf) before her impeding marriage to a Wall Street shark (Christian Sesek).

“This musical was chosen because it is a more modern and fun show,” Rohlf said. “The students really enjoy the 1980s. The cast is having a ball with the music, dancing and fashions.”

Rohlf said those in atten-dance will have the opportu-nity to black back to the 80s.

“They will have a great time,” she said.

Laurel Highlands High School is inviting audiences to follow the yellow brick road with their production of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Turning the beloved tale into a musical production is led by director Lauren Groves and her staff, acting coach, Nicole Cipriana, choreogra-pher, Kaela Myers and pit director, Mark Santore.

Those unfamiliar with the story can join in on Dorothy Gale’s (Elise Monaghan) attempt to return home following a tornado that whisks her away to Oz.

Along the way she finds friends in a scarecrow (Michael Giachetti), Tin-man (Joseph Onesi) and the lion (Ben-jamin Ashton), each eager to help her home and meet the mysterious Wizard of Oz.

“This musical is so well known,” Groves said. “It’s a favorite of so many people and the actors/actresses are doing a phenomenal job.”

Joining the cast this year is a spe-cial group of students who aid in transporting the audience to an Oz of their own.

“We’ve also had an elementary and middle school audition, so we have students ranging from first through twelfth grade in our show this year,” Groves said. “It’s going to be great.”

Frazier High SchoolWhat: “The Little Mermaid”When: 6 p.m. March 8 and 9Where: Frazier High School

auditoriumAdmission: $8 adults, $5 studentsTickets: Available at the door.Another family friendly Hollywood

tale gets the musical treatment when Frazier High School presents “The Little Mermaid”, March 8 and 9.

“We like to do fun, well recognized shows,” director Vincent Rafail said.

Based on the classic Disney fai-rytale, Ariel the little mermaid (Syd-ney Marks) makes a bargain with the evil undersea queen Ursula (Annika Erdely) to meet her human prince, Eric (Tanner Murt) on land.

Joining Ariel on her adventures are her undersea companions, Flounder the fish (Alex Marks) and the crab Se-bastian (Kendra Stoner).

For Rafail and his cast it’s impor-tant to bring such a revered tale to lo-cal audiences.

“Come see a Disney production lo-cally,” Rafail said.

Fayette County artist exhibits work at Waynesburg UniversityBy Carla E. AndertonFor the Herald-Standard

Mill Run native Carmen May chose to pursue art as a career almost by accident.

Beginning this month, the public will have the op-portunity to view the results of that happy accident when the Waynesburg Univer-sity senior exhibits her photography, sculpture and pottery at the university’s Benedum Fine Arts Gallery.

May hails from what she calls an “artistic, creative family,” but it wasn’t until nearly halfway through her college career that she decided to become a professional artist.

“My pap taught me to draw faces and horses,” she said, adding that he remains her biggest inspiration as an artist.

When May first enrolled at Waynes-burg University, she opted to major in business and marketing.

But, after taking several elective art courses, she found herself with enough credits to dual major in mar-keting and art, a development she says she’s “very happy about.”

While she continued to study draw-ing and painting, along with art histo-ry, her own artistic interests evolved and she realized her real passion was for photography, sculpture and pottery.

She attributes her love for photogra-phy to the fact that it’s a more active medium.

Similarly, she says she enjoys pot-tery because she likes the physical nature of working with clay.

“I like to work with my hands, and I like to be an active person,” May said. “With photography, you can go any-where and see so much and what you see becomes art.”

Much of her work has a nature theme, and the artist also loves travel and the outdoors.

She has a special affinity for winter sports, and spent last summer intern-ing at Utah based Ramp Sports, a skiing and snowboarding equipment company.

She hopes to work in the skiing and snowboarding industry after

graduation, perhaps as a graphic de-signer, and says she’s interested in relocating to Utah.

“I loved it. Utah’s very different from Pennsylvania,” May said. “But out west is where the skiing and snow-boarding industry is.”

Along with nature, she says she draws inspiration for her work from the people she travels with and the places she goes.

In addition to her grandfather, she credits several Waynesburg Univer-sity art professors with helping her realize her artistic vision. She also thanks her family and friends for their continuing encouragement and support.

May’s nature and travel themed exhibit, representing the best of the work she’s done while a student at Waynesburg University, will remain on display until March 8.

Admission is free and gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays or by appointment.

A pot created by artist Carmen May of Mill Run will be on display during an exhibit of her works at Waynesburg University in Greene County.

If you listen to The Mario Cooks Show every Satur-day morning on WMBS Radio 590 AM or at Mario-Cooks.com (and I hope you do), you know that we have a weekly segment called “Everyday’s A Holiday.”

In that segment we dis-cuss food holidays for the upcoming week.

Every day of the calen-dar year has at least one national food holiday that we (should) celebrate here in America. Today is actu-ally National Margarita Day, so I thought that it would be fitting to give you a recipe in my “For Start-ers” column to help you celebrate!

This task was actually more daunting than I origi-nally thought.

I figured coming up with my own twist for a margar-ita and a companion to eat along side it would be easy.

Boy was I ever wrong!Sometimes the simplest

items become the most difficult to “jazz up” so to speak. When you think about it, it makes sense.

Simple traditional foods are simple and adorned in

that fashion for a reason: they simply work as is.

However, not being one to back down from a chal-lenge, I got in my kitchen and started playing with some flavors and cooking techniques that I could transfer into a fun and workable recipe for all of you to enjoy.

A few margaritas (which actually brightened my mood quite a bit) and a few quesadillas later I finally struck gold!

After a few trial runs, Chef Porreca merged chipotle and sage simple syrup into two recipes that go together in more ways than just one. The common elements produced a wonderful margarita (photo above) and zesty quesadillas (photo at left).

Chipotle, sage quesadillas

Chipotle, sage margarita

Yield: 4 servings or 1 quesadilla

For the Pear and Vanilla Bean Relish:1 D’Anjou Pear, small dice1 teaspoon honey1 lime, zest only, finely minced¼ fresh vanilla beanPinch of sea saltDash of ground white pepper1 tablespoon butter

Procedure:1). In a small mixing bowl combine

the diced pear, honey, and lime zest and set aside.

2). Using a pairing knife, split the vanilla bean lengthwise and use the back of your knife to scrape the seeds from the middle each half of the pod. Add both the scraped seeds and the pod to the bowl with the pear mixture.

3). Season the pear mixture with sea

salt and ground white pepper. Place the mixture in a small non-stick sauté pan and cook over medium heat while stir-ring occasionally with a rubber spatula for about 15 minutes or until the pears begin to just turn golden brown (simi-lar to an apple pie filling).

4). Remove the vanilla bean pods from the pan and discard. Add the but-ter to the pan and stir until the butter is just melted and thoroughly combined.

5). Transfer the relish to a bowl and reserve to garnish the quesadilla.

For the Chipotle and Sage Pork Quesadilla:

½ medium sized white onion, small dice

1 ½ tablespoons butter¼ pond ground pork or sweet sausage2 ounces chipotle and sage simple

syrup (see earlier recipe)

Sea salt to tasteGround white pepper to taste¼ cup sharp cheddar cheese,

shredded1 white flour tortilla1 recipe pear and vanilla bean relish

(see earlier recipe)4 slivers of lime zest, use a standard

citrus zester (optional - to garnish)4 pink peppercorns (optional – to

garnish)

Procedure:1). In a medium sized non-stick sauté

pan, add the onions and then place 1 tablespoon of butter directly on top of them. Place the pan over low heat and slowly caramelize while occasionally stirring for about 25 minutes or until the onions become golden brown.

2). Add the ground pork to the pan and increase the heat to medium to brown the pork.

3). Add the simple syrup to the pam and reduce the heat to medium low. Cook the pork for an additional

five minutes until the syrup reduces to a glaze. Remove the pan from the heat, season the pork with sea salt and ground white pepper to taste, and transfer to a dinner plate.

4). Fold the cheddar cheese into the pork filling until it is thoroughly com-bined and then spoon the filling into the center of the tortilla.

5). Fold the filled tortilla in half into a half-moon shape and gently press the edges together with your fingers to form the quesadilla.

6). Heat a medium sized sauté pan on medium heat for 10-15 seconds, add ½ tablespoon of butter to the pan and al-low it to melt. Brown both sides of the quesadilla until they are just golden brown and then transfer to a cutting board.

7). Cut the quesadilla into four uni-form wedges and garnish each wedge with a teaspoon (or more if you pre-fer) of the pear and vanilla bean relish, strip of lime zest, and a pink pepper-corn. Serve immediately.

Yield: 1 cocktailFor the Chipotle and Sage Simple

Syrup:2 cups water1 heaping teaspoon chipotle powder2 sprigs fresh sage¾ cup sugarProcedure:1). In a small saucepot bring the

water to a boil.2). Add the chipotle powder and

sage to the water and reduce the heat to a light simmer. Cover and let the liquid gently simmer for 10 minutes.

3). Remove the liquid from the heat and strain it through a coffee filter.

4). Return the liquid to a clean small saucepot, add the sugar, and return it to a boil.

5). Transfer the simple syrup to a bowl and refrigerate until completely chilled for further use.

For the Chipotle and Sage Margarita:

1 tablespoon sea salt1 tablespoon sugar1 teaspoon rubbed sage (dried)1 lime, zest only14 ice cubes3 ounces tequila

2 ounces fresh squeezed lime juice1 ounce chipotle and sage simple

syrup (see earlier recipe)1 teaspoon Cointreau or any orange

flavored liqueur1 slice of fresh lime (for garnish)1 sprig of fresh sage (for garnish)Procedure:1). In a small food processor or

blender combine the sea salt, sugar, rubbed sage, and lime zest and pulse lightly to thoroughly combine.

2). Pour the salt mixture onto a small plate. Lightly rub the lip of your glass with lime juice and then in the salt mixture to coat the rim.

3). Place 6 ice cubes into the glass for serving the cocktail on the rocks.

4). In a shaker combine the remain-ing 8 ice cubes, tequila, lime juice, chipotle and sage simple syrup, and orang liqueur. Place the lid onto the shaker and shake vigorously to thor-oughly combine and chill the cocktail.

5). Remove the top lid of the shaker and pour the cocktail over the ice in the salt-rimmed glass.

6). Garnish the margarita with a slice of fresh lime and a sprig of fresh sage and serve immediately.

analogy because the recipes you have before you took a lot of time and effort and came out better than I envisioned them.

The flavors work together and will actually surprise your palate in a fan-tastic way when you try them.

The margaritas origin has more stories behind it than fit in this entire issue of GO Magazine!

That being the case, let’s all just agree that it s a delicious and timeless cocktail that is even better when you have a cold one in your hand!

The quesadilla is actually a hybrid word derived from the Spanish word for cheese (queso) and the word tortilla.

Over the years it has endured many variations and fillings which have all contributed to the version that I came up with up.

It took a few trial runs for me to get it right, but what really brought it

together was the last-minute addition of the chipotle and sage simple syrup that is also used in the margarita.

It was one of those heat of the mo-ment cooking epiphanies that I had that actually allowed the two recipes to be intertwined and go together in more ways than just one.

In any case, they are delicious separate but even more so together as most food and beverage pairings tend to be.

I hope you enjoy the margarita and quesadilla recipes that I concocted for you and that you get into the kitchen and give them a whirl.

They will definitely help you cel-ebrate National Margarita day with an explosión (that’s Spanish for bang)!

Aaron Carter plans Pittsburgh stop during comeback tourBy Scott TadyFor the Herald-Standard

There’s no quarter-life crisis for Aaron Carter.

“It’s been a great year for me so far,” said the 25-year-old pop singer. “I’m so happy with the events I’ve got going on, and that people are believ-ing in me.”

Even with a blizzard called Nemo bearing down on him in New York City, Carter sounded, for the most part, all sunshine and rainbows, chat-ting about his comeback concert tour that makes a Tuesday stop at the Hard Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh.

He’s calling it his “After Party” tour, a reference to his triple-platinum 2000 album “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),” which established him as a pre-teen and teenage heartthrob.

Tailored to fans who followed him in the early 2000s, his set will draw from his hits, such as “I Want Candy,” “That’s How I Beat Shaq,” “Aaron’s Party” and maybe even “Not Too Young, Not Too Old,” his duet with his older brother Nick Carter, of Back-street Boys fame.

“The show will have like a DJ and dance kind of vibe,” Carter said, ex-plaining that he won’t be backed by a band.

The Tampa native has got plenty of dance moves to show off, though he expects to steer clear of those rumba, foxtrot and cha cha cha steps he learned as a fifth-place finisher on Season 9 of TV’s “Dancing With the Stars.”

A 2009 cast member of Broadway’s “Seussical,” he more recently per-formed 450 shows in “The Fantas-ticks,” an off-Broadway production of the world’s longest-running musical.

“”That gave me an opportunity to improve my acting skills,” Carter said. “I like to try different things like that.”

He didn’t get much of a chance to improve his cooking skills as a contestant last year on the Food Net-work’s “Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off,” where he was the first one eliminated.

His biggest TV regret was agreeing, along with his four siblings, to appear in “House of Carters,” a short-lived, critically panned reality show that

aired in 2006 on the E! network.“That was a little too personal for

me and my family,” Carter said. “I probably wouldn’t do something like that again. You need to keep your per-sonal life more private.”

Like many entertainment fami-lies that found fame at a young age, the Carters have experienced trag-edy, namely the January 2012 drug overdose death of pop singer Leslie Carter, an older sister to Aaron by 18 months.

In interviews, Aaron has said the support of fans helped the Carter fam-ily through its grieving process.

And now Aaron is ready to re-connect with fans, with the Station Square-Hard Rock show being stop No. 4 of a 32-date club, tavern and theater tour that kicked off Friday in Poughkeepsie. N.Y.

“It’s a show where fans can come hear the songs they grew up listening to, and have a good time,” Carter said. “I’m just so excited to get back out on the road again. It’s truly the only place I can call home.”

For his latest album, Groban replaces Rick Rubin, who produced 2010’s “Il-luminations,” with Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Par-amore, Kid Rock) hoping to infuse a slight rock tone into the angelic tenor’s signature style. Groban co-wrote seven of the album’s 12 tracks and also performs five covers. The most notable of the covers includes the moving piano ballad “The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress” by Jimmy Webb and Stevie Won-der’s “I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever).”

The latter arrange-ment is a striking spec-tacular with sprawling orchestral strings and gospel choir accenting the beautifully radiant lyrics. This song has al-ways been a personal fa-vorite of mine ever since I heard Art Garfunkel perform it on his clas-sic 1975 album “Break-away.” While Garfun-kel’s version evokes a haunting and surreal innocence of searching for true love, Groban

offers a Broadway per-formance version that

is spirited to heavenly heights through the pow-erful performance of a backing choir and show-stopping dramatic closing. Groban enlists a little help from his friends on a few momen-tous selections.

Legendary trumpeter Arturo Sandoval lends his talents to the silky smooth Spanish number “Un Alma Mas,” while Italian vocalist Laura Pausini performs a pas-sionate duet with Groban on “E Ti Promettero.” While I love many of Andrea Bocelli’s albums,

his new release lacks the fire and passion found on the pieces offered by Groban, especially the stirring “Sincera.”

By branching out and remaining open to a new producer and different styles, Groban’s flawless sound is fresh, vibrant and appealing to the mu-sic masses.

The album opener, “Brave,” is perfect for a movie soundtrack or Broadway show with its upbeat and uplift-ing lyrics and soaring accompanying musical score. The evocative

feel of “False Alarms” possesses the contempo-rary sound of Coldplay, Keane, Snow Patrol or Travis as Groban skill-fully navigates the pop aspects of his vocal abilities.

As I prepare to send

a copy of “All That Echoes” to my mother-in-law in Ohio, I am well aware that there will once again be a shedding of tears as the talented tenor melts away the frigid chill of winter in Cleveland.

“I chose this show because it fits the talent I have,” said Henry Molinaro, director said.

“It is an extremely high energy and enjoyable show for both actors and audience.”

Working closely with his production staff, Molinaro is eager to showcase not only his talented cast, but also the brand new theatre they have to call home.

“If people want to see a great high school show for a very reasonable price, this is the show to see,” Mo-linaro said.

“It has tremendous entertainment value and as far as high school shows go, I will put my kids up there with the best you will see anywhere around here.”

That man-eating plant makes his appearance at Albert Gallatin High School’s spring musical “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Seymour (Luke Diamond) is a poor young man tending to his run down flower shop when he discovers an alien plant that brings him all his wildest dreams.

Unfortunately, that plant is out for human blood and Seymour makes a dastardly deal with the plant who has secret plans to take over the world.

“We wanted to chose a show that will showcase all our kids and their talents,” Toby Maykuth, director said. “We have the right mixture of kids for

this show.”Featuring a fun soundtrack of rock

Hollywood recently brought “Les Miserables” to the big screen and now Giebel Catholic Junior-Senior High school is bringing it to the State Theatre for the Arts in Uniontown, Pa stage.

Director, Nick Bell worked with a cast of more than 51 students for their recreation of a Broadway classic that explores the lives of 19th century French citizens desperate to change their lives. Frenchman, Jean Valjean, breaks his parole upon his release from prison to escape the watchful eye of a ruthless policeman and soon finds himself the caretaker of factory worker’s daughter, Cosette.

“I love to challenge my students and my students love the challenge of doing a big and elaborate show,” Bell

said. “We will now have performed the three longest running shows in Broadway history back to back to back.”

Tailored for a high school musical run time, Bell is eager to return to the stage again with his students.

“I urge the community to come out and see the amazing talent that a little school has,” Bell said. “We have a cast of students that will totally amaze you with their performance.”

Kniha said this year’s cast will in-clude students in some of the earlier grades in the district.

“We expanded the grades to audi-tion because we wanted to include the middle school students,” she said. “We wanted to showcase their talent and include them in the big produc-tion for the year.”

Uniontown High School is also bringing that coveted coat of Joseph’s

to their stage with “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

After their previous female heavy cast in last spring’s musical, director Megan Cerullo has a new plan up her sleeve with this year’s production.

“We wanted to give the boys an op-portunity to shine on stage,” Cerullo said. “It’s a very guy heavy cast. There are 11 brothers, Joseph, Pha-raoh, Jacob and Potiphar. However, there are still plenty of opportunities for the girls as well. We casted four female narrators and there are sev-eral other dance and ensemble rolls. “

Joined by fellow director and cho-reographer Justin Cerullo, assistant director and assistant choreographer Elizabeth Champlin and orchestra director CJ Durso, the staff plans to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

“Joseph and the Amazing Tech-nicolor Dreamcoat” is a very high energy and entertaining musical,” Cerullo said.
