What would you do if you found that the creator of the universewanted to be your friend? And not a long-distance, chat-on-the-weekends relationship but the deepest friendship youve ever

known. Well, thats the invitation you have today.

God wants a real, deep friendship with you.

This is what you were created for. Jesus says in John 17:3 that themeaning of life is to know God.

Sometimes when we think of God he feels distant, sometimes hefeels too grand and mysterious too understand, or sometimeslike hes not even there. This is because we live in a fallen worldthat has turned its back on God. Sin separates us from having arelationship with him.

    43

    43

Gods not out in outer space, but he is as big as the universe. So get lost inside him. Cut yourself loose and float off into zerogravity. Boldly go where no man has gone before.

It will be amazing, and it will be scary. God will ask you to dothings that will feel like leaping off a cliff. When that happens just

count to three, get a running start, and cannonball off. Youll landin his grace like an ocean.

If youre willing, God wants to take you on an adventure. No onecan show you where to go from here but Him.

    Do you accept?

God is your friend. Hes your father, your king, and closer to youthan husband and wife. Youre learning to recognize his voice

and getting to know his character. Youve probably come a longway since you began this journal. But I have news for you.

    You aint done yet.

In fact youll never be done. Ever. For all eternity.

And getting to know him more is the greatest adventure youcould ever live. People think the Christian life is boring. Neverhave they been so wrong!

God wants to take you to places youve never imagined and helpyou do things youve never dared to dream. With God by yourside you can conquer anything. You can calm storms and walkon water just like Jesus did. In fact, Jesus said, youll do evengreater!

    3

Thats why God sent Jesus. Jesus got rid of sin forever when hedied on the cross in our place. He rose again and opened up theway for us to have a relationship with God.

If you want to know God, you start with Jesus. When you accept

him into your life its like shaking Gods hand. We grow closer toGod by following Jesus.

Unfortunately we dont get to have Jesus walking around in theflesh with us these days. But we do have something better: theHoly Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the part of God that lives inside ofus, speaks to us, and guides us.

Hopefully that doesnt sound too weird. Learning to grow deeperwith God can appear confusing at first, like trying to figure out a

new social network. Thats what this journal is for:

To show you that our grand, mysterious, distant God is actuallyvery close and very simple to be friends with.

Imagine its your birthday, and throughout the day you receivesome birthday cards. One is from a friend, who picked out thefunniest card that perfectly describes your relationship. Anotheris from grandmathe entire left side is covered in a meaningfulnote about how special you are. Plus when you open it, a twentypops out! Then theres a generic card, whoever sent it didntbother to even put a note in it or their signature. They probablyjust got a card because they felt bad if they didnt.

Dry times come. Difficult times come. Sometimes you mayquestion whether theres anything to your relationship at all. Butif you stick it through, these times can be where you grow closestto God more than any other. In the difficulty is when you canlearn what God is truly like.

Dont give up. Keep your date night (quiet time) with God.When things get stale, shake things up. Keep seeking God, keeprunning your race. Keep it fresh.

In the Bible, God describes our relationship with him in manydifferent ways:Father and son/daughterFriend and friendKing and servant

But one of the main ways he describes our relationship is husbandand bride.

Marriage is the deepest kind of relationship known to man. Itsalso hard work, and many people drop out. If you ask people whohave had a successful marriage for many years theyll probablysay the secret is something like a date night.

They will get a babysitter for the kids, put away work, turn offtheir cell phones and just focus on eachother for one night everyweek or so. By doing this they are able to rekindle what made

them fall in love. Our relationship with God is the same way.

Dont let the flame go out.

If youre not careful, things will get stale. You might think youhave it all together, that everythings ok, when slowly you beginto distance yourself from God.

    13

Out of these, which card are you most likely to keep and treasure? It partly depends on your personality, but I can bet its not thegeneric one that took no thought. Why is that?

Its the personal touch that makes it

worthwhile.Hopefully by now youve learned some ways to grow in yourrelationship with God, like spending time to read the Bible andin prayer. But doing things like choosing a worship song to playis a lot like picking out a Hallmark card at the store. Its nice, butwhat God really loves is when you take it personal.

Everybody has their own style of relating to God. Some prefermusic while some prefer silence. Some are morning people, some are night people. Some are good at the spontaneouspart of relationship with God, while others are better in theconsistent part. In John 4, Jesus says that God is looking forpeople who worship him in spirit and truth, not people who aredoing it because they have to.

So dont just read the scriptures that the pastor tells you to read.Dont just sing the worship lyrics that Chris Tomlin or Hillsongwrote. Use them as a start, then take it and add your own specialtwist. Something that only you and God share, and nobody else.

When you get old enough for a cell phone, you know howfrustrating it can be when you lose connection. It doesnt helphaving a 6G LTE+ Tri-Band wireless network (or whatever theyhave by the time you read this) when you cant even get 1 barof service.

Relationship with God is all about drawing closer to him, andmaking that connection stronger and stronger. But lets faceit, sometimes that connection feels weak, and we have a fewdropped calls and unread text messages.

    Sometimes things can cause interference.

We know God is always there and always listening, but sometimesits hard to hear him. Lets talk about some things that can weakenour spirits connection with Gods voice.

    23

RoamingWhen you get away from Gods plan, when you willingly take apath he didnt want you to go on, you make it hard for God to getthrough to you. Youve got to decide that his plan is the best andgetting back on track is as easy as asking for forgiveness.

Unread NotificationsLife gets busier the older you get and soon there are dozensof things demanding your attention. Its like having a bunch ofthose little red notification numbers on your phoneit gets toooverwhelming to give any time to God. Time to shut off the othervoices and get alone with God.

Dropped phoneIt happens to the best of us. One little slip, it was out of the case, and you have a smashed screen. You may have made a mistakethat you think ruined your life. But God loves to make your lifebrand new.

OK maybe you dont relate to those metaphors. Maybe youresimply too bored, or ashamed, or confused, to talk to God. Itsok. Even people who have been Christians for years have toreboot their relationship with God from time to time. Simplypick it back up where you started: with Jesus. Remember his lovefor you, and that will recharge you back to full bars.

When you get away frr m an, w y u i ingly take aat e i nt want you to go on, you ma e it hard or God to getroug to you. Youve go o eci e at is plan is t e e an
