GO AND SPELL HIS LIFE SAVING WORD

The van carrying eighteen brothers and sisters, filled with burden for the souls, was about to depart from the village. It was almost dusk on an unusually longersummer day. The people who thronged us to hear the gospel and prayed at for

their afflictions, illness, loneliness, poverty, unemployment, barrenness. the listgoes on, were reluctant to give way for our departure. The scene witnessed by usthere and the plight of the people thronged, burdened our hearts and every one ofus was moved with compassion just as our Saviour was one day :when he saw themultitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, andwere scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. (Mathew : 9:36).

We were on a gospel ministry to some villages in Perambalur district of TamilNadu a few years ago. Almost all were working people and a few of us were withfamilies. It was an unforgettable opportunity given by Tamil Nadu Gospel Team,

a state level Gospel Ministry, headquartered at Tirunelveli of Tamil Nadu. Havingtravelled hundreds of kilometers and completed one round of gospel work in allthe villages in Trichy District, we were burdened to move to the nearbyPerambalur district as it was reported to us that hundreds of villages in thatdistrict were unreached with the Good News. Major part of the district wasreeling under drought due to regularly failing monsoons. The literacy level was very poor. The number of churches was very less. Here and there someindependent churches were found in the district, with poor infrastructure andbuilding. Mainline churches were very meager and their presence was felt only inthe district headquarter Perambalur, and in a few towns like Ariyalur. Yes, theharvest truly was plenteous. These statistics prompted us to make regular visitsto the district on week ends with a team of brothers and sisters from Trichy forevangelical work.

The scene explained in the first paragraph above was the one we experienced onone of such trips to that district. When we were winding up the days gospel workto return to Trichy, with two hours travel left to undertake, the team in-chargecame with a plan of visiting yet another village before we travelled back home.Though all were tired and many, especially, the ladies were eager to reach homeearly, the burden for souls in us was deepened with the information he gaveabout the village. The name of the village was Sillakkudi and to reach there fromthe direction from where we were, was an uphill task to perform, as told by the

local people. The Katcha road was not even fit for a bullock cart to travel.Surely, it was going to be a testing experience for our van driver, who had alreadystarted to murmur. The only thought burdened us to move forward to the village

was this : When it was impossible even for a bullock cart to reach the village, howcould the Gospel have reached there? So, we requested the reluctant driver to

reach us to the village anyhow. Really, the road was very poor and rocky withsteep ups and downs. The van was moving bit by bit like a boat in a troubledwater. It was a strenuous journey. With fervent prayers and singing, somehowwe reached the tiny and sleepy Sillakkudi. The street lights were out of order andthe nights darkness was slowly engulfing the already gloomy and sleepy village. There were around two hundred houses in the village, many of them were huts. Afew shops were there at the centre of the village and almost all the men-folk weregathered at the place.

As usual, on reaching the village, all got down from the van at the centre placeand sang a gospel song through the PA system with music. The sudden soundwent from the micro phone awakened the people who were about to settle for theday even before the approach of night. They started to walk toward the van, everyone wonderstruck, to see ladies and men singing on the street. It was anunusual sight for them and every one thronged us without having an iota of fore-knowledge that they were soon going to hear the good news, so far unheard.

The gospel message preached in the village was centered around the faith of theBartimaeus, the blind, as seen in Mark 10:46-52. The Lord Jesus Christ wasmerciful and mindful enough to hear the cry of Bartimaeus, raised above thevoices of shouting and yelling of a great number of people. The blind man wasunmindful of the threatening of the people. His sole aim was to get sight to his

blind eyes. So, he never minded the unfavourable situation and the rebuke ofthose around Jesus. The only weapon he had was faith. Yes, he believed that themercy of Jesus, the Son of David, would release him from the captivity ofdarkness. He used the weapon so powerfully that even the disciples could notstop him drawing the attention of Jesus. His single minded faith wasacknowledged by Jesus Himself as the root cause for his miraculous healing. This was the gist of the half an hour message.

After the open air preaching, since we were already late, we all hurriedly boardedthe van leaving the usual work of door-to-door campaign undone. The driver wasalready on his seat and the van was about to depart from the village. At that

point of time, a man of about 40 years old, came on the side of the window andpleaded us to visit his home. His request was so moving and earnest that wecould not avoid. Leaving many back in the van, only few brothers followed theman. He led us through narrow streets and finally came in front of a thatchedhouse.

Dear friends, it is our request to you, to go and spell the life saving word of Godfor the poor, afflicted, downtrodden, oppressed, abandoned, lonely, sick, depressed, rejected, underprivileged, marginalized person who may be known toyou or nearer to you.

We did not perform a miracle, we did not preach long with eloquence, nor we didoffer any big or impractical solution or promise to the poor man of Sillakudi. Itwas the Word of God which changed his heart and brought immeasurable peaceand faith to him. Beloved, it was so simple! But, our inaction would have made itcomplicated for his soul to be saved in His Day!

There are many who say, "Who will show us some good? (Psalm 4 : 6). Wontyou want to be the one?

On verification with an Ophthalmologist, we came to know that the children were

affected by Nyctalopia. Nyctoalopia is a condition making it difficult or impossible tosee in relatively low light. It is a symptom of several eye diseases. Night blindness may

exist from birth, or be caused by injury or malnutrition. Patients suffering from this

genetic condition have progressive nyctalopia and eventually their daytime vision mayalso be affected.

    GO AND SPELL HIS COMPASSION

Once we were going to a remote village in Tanjore District of Tamil Nadu, by a van. Onboth sides of the road, there were fields with ripe-sugarcanes, ready for harvest. In one

such field, there was seen a crowd of grief-struck people. The reason was evident when

we saw the totally fire-engulfed sugarcane field. A poor farmers one-acre field withstanding ripe sugarcane crop was set on fire allegedly by some miscreants.

We moved on into the village. The entire village was empty as all of its inhabitants had

run out to the field-on-fire, leaving their houses open. Passing through the streets, wesaw a house with its doors closed from inside. One of our fellow travelers, a lady

teacher, alighted from the van and approached the house. She knocked the door. No

response. After some continuous knocking, the door was opened reluctantly by a middle

aged woman whose condition was so alarming that the teacher had to catch hold of herfrom falling down. On enquiry, it was known that she was the wife of the poor farmer

whose field was destroyed by fire. Unable to bear the devastating incident and itsattendant liabilities, she took a decision to end her life by hanging, when everybody was

    out in the field.

The teacher with compassion and love consoled the farmers wife saying, Dont worry, sister. Jesus, the Lord of compassion, understands your worries more than anybody else,

and He sees your tears. He will surely raise your family up. Believe in Him.

Sobbing uncontrollably and with an initial reluctance, she started to listen. Jesus will be

with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. She sat straight and lent her ears

seriously. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. Iwill strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

    (Isaiah 41:10, the Holy Bible)

Now, she stopped weeping and looked at the teacher with some enthusiasm, gathering her

strength. Though the mountain be shaken and the hills be removed, yet His unfailing

love for you will not be shaken. (Isaiah 54:10, the Holy Bible)

She now looked hopeful. Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no

more; the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end. (Isaiah

    60:20, the Holy Bible)

The effect was wonderful and miraculous. The farmers wife gathered her strength, her

face got brightened and she abandoned the sinful idea of committing suicide. Amazing, but true. Oh, what powerful words they are! They were sent like a lightning bolt of

power to break the hypnotic grip of evil as evidenced in her suicide attempt and to save a

    precious life.

The word of God is powerful. Thus says the Holy God, So is my word that goes out

from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and

achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11, the Holy Bible). How true!

Dear friends, it is our request to you, to go and spell the compassion our God hasfor the poor, afflicted, downtrodden, oppressed, abandoned, lonely, sick, depressed, rejected, underprivileged, marginalized person who may be known toyou or nearer to you. He or she needs to be shown the compassion Jesus has forhim/her.

We did not perform a miracle, we did not preach long with eloquence, nor we didoffer any big or impractical solution or promise to the poor lady. It was the Wordof God which changed her heart and brought immeasurable peace in her.Beloved, it was so simple! But, our inaction would have made it complicated forher soul to be saved in His Day!
