GNLD has been around for more than 50 years,
making it one of the most established companies in
our industry. Going back to the early days of GNLD,
the situations that faced so many were the
deterioration of the diet, the development of poor
health habits such as smoking, and the emergence
of obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease.
Also in those days, parents would recommend
that their children get a good education and a job
that offered long-term security and a good
pension plan. Unemployment was almost
unheard of, with most students and graduates
finding jobs and careers that offered that long-term
security. Finally, the world was just becoming
aware of the environmental damage being done by
harsh chemicals and non-degradable products.
Over the past twenty to thirty years, we have seen
tremendous strides being made in medical
treatment, science, and particularly in technology
and communication. Given these incredible
advances, one could be led to believe that the

In 2004, after a once-in-a-lifetime adventure climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, U.S. businessman George Namkung toured the surrounding region, focusing on the schools. George knew he would see dirt floors and inadequate school supplies, but he was unprepared for the hunger in the eyes of the children.

Dedicated teachers described to him the challenges these children face each day in walking great distances to school and remaining attentive—with no food in their stomachs. Many students left for the day at lunchtime to forage for food or walk to town and beg for assistance.
“Upon our return home, the visual images and thoughts of young children, starting from age four, not having nutrition during the course of each and every day became a haunting experience,” recounts George, who immediately began to lay the foundation for the Kids Of Kilimanjaro program. Working with a non-governmental organization, Kids Of Kilimanjaro quickly evolved into a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) foundation. Through the tireless work of George and his family and supporters, Kids Of Kilimanjaro has been providing hot lunchtime meals to hungry schoolchildren for the past five years—and is now feeding over 13,000 students a day! But there was still much
work to be done. Kids Of Kilimanjaro simply didn’t have the resources to reach every school in the area, and 17 schools with 8000 more students were still in great need every day.
An organization with such a strong focus on children’s health through better nutrition is obviously in sync with GNLD’s core values. So it’s no surprise that when GNLD Founder Jerry Brassfield became aware of this powerful program, he knew we had to be a part of it. Hearing about the 17 schools on the waiting list prompted Jerry’s decisive action to become Kids Of Kilimanjaro’s founding corporate sponsor. “George Namkung is a man of passion and action,” Brassfield says. “And so we are proud to join forces with his organization to assist these children. As leaders in the nutrition industry, it is our honor—and our responsibility—to participate in this manner.” With GNLD’s new support, Kids Of Kilimanjaro has already been able to add nearly 2,000 more students a day to the
program—with a commitment to bring the remaining 6,000 children into the program by the end of 2011! George notes, “GNLD is in a class of its own.”
The children who have been part of the Kids Of Kilimanjaro program since its inception five years ago are thriving, and the children who are new to their daily hot lunch routine are already benefitting dramatically. Their immune systems are stronger and they are better able to concentrate on their studies. On a recent trip to Tanzania, GNLD President and CEO Roget Uys witnessed the inspiring work of Kids Of Kilimanjaro firsthand. “Through this amazing program, the educational dreams of these children can finally become reality,” he explains. “They are beautiful and bright children who now have hope—and that gives us all hope for an even better future.” n

Following a recent two-day summit, GNLD’s Scientific Advisory Board welcomed a new member whose face is recognized throughout the GNLD world. North American Executive Vice President and the International Vice President of Product, Science, and Technology Anjana Srivastava has joined the board as head of the SAB.
With a BS in Life Sciences, an MS in Botany, and an MBA with specialization in Marketing plus many years of experience first in the pharmaceutical industry and most recently in the health and nutrition industry, Anjana is poised to make a powerful contribution in her new role. Sometimes a vacation is more than good times experienced while away from work. For Sapphire Directors Dan and Marie Markle a simple trip to Orlando turned into something far more meaningful.
Although family time is something cherished by Dan and Marie, the busy schedule of their son Doug, his wife Jean, and their four active granddaughters, sometimes makes getting everyone together a challenge. As a Christmas gift, Dan and Marie presented Doug’s family with a special surprise—they were all going to Disneyworld! Pandemonium broke out as the shrieking girls and teary-eyed mother leapt and danced around the living room. “To be able to create that moment for them—and for Dan and I—meant the world to us.”
The goal of Kamie, age 12, Cassie, age 10, Jessie, age 6, and 5-year-old Abbie, was simple: “They all had their autograph books and they wanted to meet every Disney character,” laughs Dan. “And they did.”
Dan becomes more serious when he speaks of the importance of family. “Family means everything to us. When our elderly parents became ill, our GNLD business provided Marie and I the time and money to travel out of state to be with them. And when our son needed to move his family to Georgia for career reasons, our business allowed us to relocate also and continue to be a part of our granddaughters’ lives.”
Although their week-long trip included all the Orlando attractions, Disneyworld was clearly Marie’s favorite. “Seeing

our grand-daughters’ eyes sparkle the entire time was a memory I will always hold. What could be better than that? We are so appreciative of our GNLD business.” n
