GMSI582 Extended Essay 2011
Mode of Delivery: Independent study
Calendar
31st January, 2011 (Monday) : Submission of Interim Report
8th April, 2011 (Friday) : Submission of Final Report
Pre-requisites: GMSI577Research Methodology
Rationale of the Module: Give an opportunity to students to conduct independent study based upon
a company internship or submission of extended essay on a chosen topic or theme. This will providethe students an opportunity to work independently and produce a fieldwork report or essay making
them to apply their knowledge of various areas of management.
Syllabus Outline:
The extended essay is an in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject. Its objective is to
provide students an opportunity to engage in independent research, wherein they investigate an
academic question relating to business and management. This could be based on library research
and secondary data entirely.
Essay can also be a theoretical exposition of any business process or concept with its critical
evaluation and subjective / objective assessment. In other words it is a conceptual narrative of any
business theme.
Fieldwork could involve primary as well as secondary data collection based research and
analysis. This may be more applied as compared to the Extended Essay topics and could involve
specific companies/organizations or brands within their ambit. The fieldwork would be problem
solving in nature and/or propose an explanation, based on analysis and research, of a market
phenomena.
Fieldwork reports may also be based upon an existing (or expected) issue in an organizationwhere the student has interned.
