DescriptionA sense of morbidity permeates workscomposed over the last five years ofChopin's life, but with that also comesome of the most triumphant andecstatic moments in his music. Bypresenting the last seven opuses of soloworks published before his death, thisprogram offers a tremendous breadthand variety spanning many of Chopin'smost popular and enduring genres.

Madison MarshallGMS violist, Madison Marshall, was afeatured soloist in February with theOrchestra of Southern Utah. Here iswhat they wrote about her in the reviewof the concert:
"An even younger soloist, the fifteenyearold violist Madison Marshall tookthe stage as OSU Conductor Xun Suntook over directing responsibilities forTheme and Variations for Viola andOrchestra by Alan Shulman. Belying herage, Marshall displayed a matureinterpretive mastery of this manyhuednumber.
From the opening strains of autumnalmellowness, Marshall seamlesslyaccelerated into passages of fitfultension, only to finally melt into thesweetly mournful melancholy of theconclusion. With the assurance of aseasoned concert soloist, Marshalldistilled the essence of each melodicmovement. Listeners could only marvelat the virtuosity of an instrumentalist withher best years still before her!"
Cathy Lee WorkshopIn February, teachers and students inthe Suzuki School for Strings at theGifted Music School Preparatory Divisionwere privileged to participate in aworkshop with master teacher CathyLee, from San Francisco. Ms. Lee studied pedagogy with Dr.Shinichi Suzuki and has been a teachertrainer with the Suzuki Association of theAmericas for almost forty years. Shebrings a dynamic energy and practicalapproach to her teaching, and is asengaging working with young studentsas with experienced teachers. During the workshop, Ms. Lee focusedon the need for balance: balance in ourbodies as we play, and balance in ourapproach to teaching. As we search forand develop balance, our tone andenjoyment in the musicmaking processcan both grow. Ms. Lee was as adept at leading a groupof young "Twinkler" students, as she wasdiscussing nuanced technique questionswith our experienced faculty. We are allfortunate to have had the opportunity towork with her.
