Editor's Note

I am a firm believer of Edith Wharton's saying “Thereare two ways of spreading light…To be thecandle…Or the mirror that reflects it”. We as Rotariansare fortunate to be the candle. However, it doesn'tstop there; we need to find the mirror as well. Be it ourfriends, family, neighbor, colleagues; we need to findthe sources to spread the light. Here's to membershipdevelopment, of finding quality members / sources &spreading the rotary light via our various 'sources'.

Message of RI President

In Rotary, we mark August as Membership and Extension Month. There isa good reason why we remind ourselves of the importance of membershipearly in every Rotary year: because the job of growing our membership isone that we can never begin too soon. It is also a job that we can neverstop working on. In order to keep serving, Rotary always needs to be growing!

We have talked for many years about the importance of the family ofRotary. In this Rotary year, I want to make not just the family of Rotary, butour own Rotary families, a priority in our membership. After 37 years offollowing me in Rotary, my wife, Corinna, finally became a Rotarian lastyear. We attended the chartering of a new club in Taiwan together, andshe said, "It's time for me to become a Rotarian too!" So she joined thatclub. And soon, so did a lot of other people. Now that club has 102members, and it's the second-largest club in Taiwan.

Inviting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting our numbers up. Itaddresses the reality that Rotary still has far more men as members thanit does women, and that is something we need to work on. When we bringmore women into Rotary, our clubs become more appealing to prospectivefemale members - and become more productive as well.

This year we are going to have something new in Rotary: a membershipsupport team pin. This means that if you invite a new member into Rotary, you get a special pin to wear with your Rotary gearwheel. But we all knowthat the job of growing membership doesn't end when a new memberjoins. It ends only when a new member is enjoying being a Rotarian andnever wants to leave! And making sure thatour clubs are enjoyable places to be is a key part of growing membership.

People come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but they stay becauseRotary is fun to be a part of. So I want to remind all of you to have fun inyour clubs and your districts. Rotary is based on the idea that our serviceis more effective when we serve together with our friends. So let's enjoy ourRotary service, share it with others, and Light Up Rotary together!

Message of District Governor

Welcome to the 2nd month of the Rotary year 2014-2015. AchievingLight Up Rotary with the preceding month, we received immense responsefrom all over the world. Implementing the T-E-A-C-H program & aligningbeliefs that reinstate hope in every member & non-member alike, ROTARYhas made a mark in its first quarter of the year 2014-2015. Through thisprogram, eradicating illiteracy & enhancing humanitarian services tohighlight Pakistan as a major contributor to ROTARY's universal goals andaims is how the month of July followed up. I am pleased to represent asthe District Governor & incorporate efforts to raise the education standardbar in Pakistan. Let us keep going on with unity, faith & discipline to furtherdevelop a year to remember for achievements!

August is Membership Month, which means it's time to celebrate your Rotaryclub, your members, and the good you do in your community and aroundthe world. This is the month where we dwell on our past achievements andincrease our efforts for the future. Each year Rotary clubs around the worldgrow in strength and size. By this year, there are 34,282 clubs hosting 1.2million members worldwide. As we grow in number, we are able to increasethe number of lives we affect with our programs. And this month, our aimis to grow Rotary like never before. Bringing new members to your Rotaryclub is an integral part of assuring its sustainability and future. New memberscan re-energize your club with new ideas, ways of doing things, and differentskills. Existing members can become more engaged through new membersby being involved in their new member orientation to your Rotary club asa mentor.

I believe attracting more women members is a major factor to ensureRotary's future. Women have long proven their worth at the community andinternational level, leading in a multitude of professions and excelling atthe highest professional level.

Achieving growth is not only about attracting new members, it is also aboutkeeping existing members. Member engagement is integral to memberretention. So I've proposed to have ourselves always in the know-how ofwhat is going on within Rotary & outside, to ensure the flow of informationand that every member has their name to the contribution.

I shall end by stating the obvious yet most important, that no act of kindness,no matter how small, is ever wasted. Therefore, it is our right to take whatthis world has to offer, but at the same time give something back. No onehas ever become poor by giving. By doing so, even after we depart fromthis world, we would have left a footprint through the acts of kindness andthe help we have provided. What we give away, will be the wealth we takewith us to the afterlife.

Membership Development Action Plan

03

To recruit and retain high quality Rotary club members, your membership development plan should have thefollowing action steps:

1. Identify2. Introduce3. Invite4. Induct5. Inform and orient6. Involve7. Educate

1. IdentifyIdentify well-qualified members of your community tobe members of your Rotary club. These individualsshould be of strong character and have acommitment to service. This focus on quality willimprove your club's membership retention.

2. IntroduceIntroduce prospective members to Rotary by informingthem about Rotary International's programs and yourclub's service efforts. Compile this information in aclub profile that can be presented to visitors or insertedinto copies of the “This Is Rotary” brochure and givento all visitors. A recent issue of The Rotarian or a Rotaryregional magazine is also a good introduction toRotary. A prospective member who has beenintroduced to Rotary by enthusiastic Rotarians and isinformed about the club's projects before joining ismore likely to become involved and remain active.

3. InviteInvite a prospective member to become a clubmember with a personal visit from both the proposerand a member of the club's membership committee. This two-person visit provides the prospective memberwith a second contact in the club, one who bringsadditional Rotary knowledge and experience. Rotariansextending the invitation should know the personalinterests and abilities of the prospective member inorder to point out relevant club activities and projects.

4. InductInduct new members in a dignified and meaningfulmanner. Use the induction ceremony as an opportunityto explain the benefits and responsibilities of being aRotarian. Your Rotary club should provide a newmember with the following items:

u Rotary lapel pin

u Membership identification card

u Copy of the club bulletin

u District directory

u Latest dist r ict governor 's monthly letter

u The Rotarian or Rotary regional magazine

u List of local clubs for make-up meetings

u Club history

u Club banner

If possible, invite family members to attend. Duringthe ceremony, offer new members the opportunityto give a five-minute talk about themselves, theirbusinesses, and their families. The induction ceremonyshould leave new members feeling enthused aboutmembership.

5. Inform and OrientInform new members about your club and RI byfocusing on the following areas:

u Benefits of membership

u Responsibilities of membership

u Opportunities for service

Consider scheduling a formal orientation program inseveral sessions to enhance retention of information.During the first six months, new members can expandtheir understanding of Rotary in these ways:

u Have a new member serve as a delegate to theDistrict Conference to learn about the world of Rotaryand the projects being done outside of your club. Some clubs assist the new member by paying partor all of the registration fees and costs of theconference. After the conference, ask the newmember to give a report to the club.

u Introduce a “commencement” program, whereall club members who join in the same Rotary yearwork together on a project.

7. EducateEducate all club members so they have enoughknowledge to take the initiative and become moreactive. Some members resign from their clubs becausethey feel uninformed.

Clubs should have a continuing Rotary educationpolicy in place to keep existing members up-to-dateon Rotary and the club. Such a program would include:

M e m b e r s h i pDeve lopment i s animportant issue whichneeds special attention ofall the clubs in the District.In Apr i l 2014, I wasdesignated as AssistantRotary Coordinator, RotaryInternational Zone 6B. Zone6B comprises RID 3271 &

3272(Pakistan), RID 3281 &3282 (Bangladesh), RID3300 (Malaysia), RID 3310

(Brunei & parts of Malaysia & Singapore), RID 3330 &3340 (Thailand), RID 3350 (Thailand and Cambodia),RID 3360 (Laos). I have been assigned

RID 3271 & 3272.

A Regional Meeting on Membership Planning & JointSeminar and Training was held at Bangkok,Thailandon22ndand 23rd April 2014. RRFCs, RCs, RIPCs, ARCs,DGs, DGEs and DGNs from all over the Zone 6B (SouthEast Asia) participated in the meeting.

The meeting was convened by RID SaowalakRattanavich. RRFC Faiz Kidwai, incoming RRFC RafiqueSiddique, RPIC Rajendra and RC Saleem Raza alsotook active part in organizing the training seminar.PRIDNoraseth Pathmanad who is also Major Gift Advisorfor the zone was also present and presented averymotivationa laddress to all. Where as RRFC Faiz Kidwaipresented high performance awards to various districtsin the zone.

In this event, many important issues related to Zone6B were highlighted and discussed at length whichinclude five years trend and current overall picture ofZone 6B Membership towards 2013-14 goals, RegionalMembership Plan for 2014-15: Budget and Actionplan, Membership Awards (2014-15), besides therewere also some joint plenary sessions in which actionplans pertaining to foundation were discussed.Membership of women in Rotary is quite low andparticularly in Districts 3271 & 3272. As per my

suggestion, a joint meeting of women in Rotary washeld in May 2014, which was quite successful. WomenRotarians shared their success stories and pledged toincrease the membership of women in Rotary. EveryRotarian should invite their spouse into Rotary. MakeRotary for the whole family.

When I assumed my responsibilities in July, I havestarted coordination with District leaderships of 3271& 3272 as well as at club levels and highlighted theimportance of membership development.Rotarians all around the world observe Membershipand Extension Month in August every year. Membershipis the 'single most important thing' in Rotary. Withoutmembers, we cannot contribute to Foundation. Withoutmembers, we cannot continue to provide 'serviceabove self'. Without members, the good that Rotarydoes at home and around the world would disappear.Rotary works because it is built on members whounderstand the value of service.

Membership in Rotary is an honour and a privilegeand, with all things worth doing in life, it comes withduties and responsibilities. Membership growth is aconstant challenge.Growing our membership is theresponsibility of all Rotarians - not merely to increasethe numbers on an annual report but to share the giftof Rotary.

One of Rotary's greatest strengths is its diversity; Diversityin vocations and professions, diversity in gender, anddiversity in ethnicity. Yet the very thing that makesRotary attractive, makes membership developmentdifficult. As we encourage professionals to join Rotaryfrom across generational, gender, and ethnicboundaries, diversity will challenge us to understandhow to effectively recruit them, and involve them inRotary.

If we kept every new member who joined Rotary, wewouldn't need to talk about membership anymore. We get plenty of new members in Rotary every year- about 120,000. But every year, just about that manymembers leave. And that's why our numbers havestayed the same, at about 1.2 million members,

By PDG M. Iqbal QureshiAssistant Rotary CoordinatorRI Zone 6B

Importance of Membership Development

12

for more than 15 years. It's time to do somethingabout it - not just talk about it but actually dosomething about it. The first thing we need to do istake a look at those who are leaving and find outwhy they're leaving and what, if anything, we cando about it. We are committed to seeing Rotarymembership climb to 1.3 million by 2015.

I have a question in my mind that Why not we have1.5 million Rotarians? Why not 5 million? Rotary is avast, private United Nations - the most powerful, prestigious, important organization of competentcommunity leaders the world has ever known. Inthe words of Albert Schweitzer, “Rotary is necessaryfor the future.”

We need to work on bringing younger members intoRotary - making sure that today's Rotaractors,Interactors, RYLArians, Youth Exchange students,Foundation Scholars, and Group Study Exchangeteam members become tomorrow's Rotarians.

Yes, New Generations Service is an integral part ofRotary. But just as future generations depend onRotary, Rotary depends on them. We must continueto grow, to create new Rotarians. After all, it is thenext generation of Rotarians that will continue ourgood work. And while we have much to offer - ourcommitment, our wisdom, our experience - thereis much we can learn from them as well.

Members will feel more a part of the club andRotary's mission if they are kept abreast of changesand events. I suggest using your club and districtWeb sites, weekly meetings and e-mails, and clubbulletins to share information from your districtgovernor or the RI Secretariat.

Rotary's success can only be achieved through amembership that has fully engaged their head, heart, and hands in service to their work, family, friends, and mankind.

The more membership increases the more Rotarywill prosper in our region.

The Object Of RotaryThe Object of Rotary is to encourage andfoster the ideal of service as a basis of worthyenterprise and, in particular, to encourageand foster:

First. The development of acquaintance asan opportunity for service;

Second. High ethical standards in businessand professions; the recognition of theworthiness of all useful occupations; and thedignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation asan opportunity to serve society;

Third. The application of the ideal of servicein each Rotarian’s personal, business, andcommunity life;

Fourth. The advancement of internationalunderstanding, goodwill, and peace througha world fellowship of business andprofessional persons united in the ideal ofservice.

The 4-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do :

• Is it the TRUTH ?

• Is it FAIR to all concerned?

• Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS?

• Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
