    INTRODUCTION

    Your GME TX3510/TX3520/TX3540 80 channel radio isAustralian designed and built and is the most advanced UHFCitizen Band radio available. It combines the very latest inelectronic hardware with the most up-to-date computer aideddesign and manufacturing techniques to produce an extremelycompact mobile radio with outstanding specicationsand performance.

    Your radio is designed for unobtrusive mounting in modernvehicles. With its built-in loud speaker and extremely smallsize, it can be mounted in almost any convenient location.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATIONCONCERNING UHF CB RADIO

    The use of the Citizen Band radio service is licensed in

    Australia by the ACMA Radio communications (CitizensBand Radio Stations) Class Licence and in New Zealand bythe Ministry of Economic Development New Zealand (MED).A General User Radio Licence for Citizens Band radio andoperation is subject to conditions contained in those licences.

    The class licence for users and equipment operating in theCB/PRS 477 MHz band has been amended. This radio meets

    the new 80 channel standard.

    In simple terms the same amount of spectrum is available;however, radio transceivers can now operate in a narrowerbandwidth and hence use less spectrum. These radios aregenerally referred to as narrowband or 12.5 kHz radios. Byusing 12.5 kHz channel spacing instead of 25 kHz, the 40channels originally allocated can now be expanded to 80channels thereby doubling the channel capacity and relievingcongestion in the UHF CB/PRS band.

    Original 40 channel wideband Radios will continue to operateon the original 40 channels, however they will not be ableto converse on the newer channels 41 80. The newernarrowband radios will be able to converse with all older 40channel wideband radios on all channels 1 to 40 as well as thenewer channels allocated from 41 to 80.

    The mixing of narrowband and wideband radios in the

    same spectrum can cause some possible operating issues ofinterference and varying levels of received volume.

    POSSIBLE ISSUES

    When a new narrowband radio receives a transmission froman older wideband radio the speech may sound loud anddistorted simply adjust your radio volume forbest performance.

    When an older wideband radio receives a signal from a newnarrowband radio, the speech may sound quiet simply adjustyour radio volume for best performance.

    Depending on how close your receiving radio is to anothertransmitting radio, there can be interference from the

    transmitting radio if it is using a channel adjacent to thechannel you are listening to. Simply try going up or down afew channels from the currently selected channel.

    The above situations are not a fault of the radio but asymptom of operating wideband and narrowband radios inthe same bandwidth. This possible interference will decreaseover time as the population of wideband radios ages and

    decreases.Further information and updates are available from theAustralian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) atwww.acma.gov.au and the Ministry of Economic Development(MED), Radio Spectrum Management at: www.rsm.govt.nz

    EMERGENCY CHANNELS

    The ACMA has allocated channels 5/35 for emergency useonly. Channel 5 is the primary Simplex Emergency Channel.Where a Channel 5 repeater is available, you should selectDuplex on CH 5.

    NOTE:Channel 35 is the input channel for the Channel 5repeater therefore Channel 35 should also not be used foranything other than emergency transmissions.

    TELEMETRY CHANNELS

    ACMA regulations have allocated channels 22 and 23for telemetry only applications and have prohibited thetransmission of speech on these channels. Consequently yourradio has a transmit inhibit applied to channels 22 and 23.

    In the event additional telemetry/telecommand channels areapproved by the ACMA, these channels shall be added tothose currently listed where voice transmission is inhibited.Currently transmissions on channels 61, 62 and 63 are alsoinhibited and these channels are reserved for future allocation.

    FEATURES

    interference caused by strong local signals on adjacentchannels and prevents it from opening your squelch. ASMalso minimises distortion on reception by ne tuning thereceiver frequency to match that of the incoming signal.This prevents your squelch from opening to unwantedinterference and ensures that incoming signals remain clearand undistorted even when they are slightly off-frequency.

    Dynamic Volume Control (DVC): Automaticallycompensates for variations in received audio level resultingin a constant audio output level to the speaker.

    Voice Inversion Scrambler

    When activated, scrambles your voice so thatcommunications are only intelligible to others using thesame scrambler technology.

    Programmable Scan Function: Scans the selected UHFCB channels with both Group and Open scan functionsavailable.

    Individually Programmable DUPLEX function:

    selectable for only those individual channels in your areathat have repeaters, leaving the others free for use as extrasimplex channels.

    The controls on the TX3510 and TX3520 front panel andTX3540 controller microphone all have multiple functions. The

    primary functions are labelled in BLACK, while the secondaryfunctions are labelled in RED. To access a primary functionsimply press the required key.

    To access a secondary function, briey press theF keyfollowed immediately by the required key.

    NOTE:When using theF key to access other functions,F isdisplayed to indicate that Function mode is activated. If therequired function is not selected within 5 seconds theF keyselection will time out with a low beep andF will disappearfrom the display.

    A more detailed description of these key functions is includedin this General Operation section. These instructions describethe radio functions using the TX3510/TX3520 controls (with theTX3540 controls shown in brackets).

    VOLUME

    Rotate theVolume control clockwise past the click (orpress the PWR key) to turn the radio on. Rotate theVolumecontrol left or right (or press the+ or keys) to adjust thevolume.

    If no sound is heard, briey press theSQL key to temporarilyun-mute the radio then adjust the Volume while listening tothe background noise. When nished, briey press theSQL key again to re-mute the radio.

    NOTE:At the minimum volume setting there is still sufcientVolume to be heard in a quiet cabin environment.

    SELECTING CHANNELS

    To select the required channel, rotate theChannel knob (orpress the or keys). Rotate the knob clockwise (or press

    ) to select a higher channel or counter clockwise (or press) to select lower channels. The selected channel is displayed

    on the LCD.

    SQUELCH

    The squelch is used to eliminate any annoying backgroundnoise when there are no signals present. The squelch can

    be opened or closed using theSQL key. When the squelchis open the receivers background noise can be heard andthe symbol is displayed. When the squelch is closed thereceiver remains quiet while there are no signals present butany incoming signals will override the squelch and be heard inthe speaker.

    Adjusting the Squelch level

    The squelch sensitivity level has been factory set to provideoptimum performance under most operating conditions. Ifrequired, the sensitivity level can be adjusted to suitchanging conditions.

    To adjust the squelch sensitivity, briey press theChannelknob (or LVLPRI key). The channel display will show thecurrent squelch level setting in values fromSQL-1 to SQL-9.Rotate theChannel knob (or press the or keys onthe controller microphone) to change the squelch setting.A squelch setting ofSQL-1 allows the squelch to open onvery weak signals whereas a setting ofSQL-9 requires much

    stronger signals to overcome the squelch. After adjusting thesquelch sensitivity, briey press theChannel knob (or LVLPRIkey) to return to normal operation.

    NOTE:The squelch level can be actively adjusted while theradio is scanning. This allows you to tighten the squelch incases where an undesired weak or noisy signal is interruptingthe scan.

    SIGNAL METER

    The signal meter indicates the relative strength of theincoming signal in numerical format. Signal strengths aredisplayed on the lower left of the Channel Display in valuesfrom 0 to 9. Signals above strength 9 are displayed as 9+.

    NOTE:Refer to theConguration Menu for other optionsthat can be displayed in this location.

    TRANSMITTING

    Prior to transmitting, always check the channel is not beingused. This can be done by listening to the channel or byvisually checking that the icon is not visible or the signalmeter is not indicating a signal.

    To transmit, press thePTT switch on the microphone. Theicon will appear. Hold the microphone about 5-8 cm from

    your face and speak at a normal voice level. The microphoneis quite sensitive so it is not necessary to raise your voice orshout. Release thePTT when you have nished talking. The

    icon will disappear.

    IMPORTANT: Always listen to ensure the channel is freebefore transmitting.

    TIME-OUT TIMER

    The radio has a built-in time-out timer that automaticallylimits transmissions to a maximum of 3 minutes of continuousoperation. This feature is required by the ACMA to preventaccidental blocking of the frequency should your PTT switchbecome jammed or be otherwise pressed accidentally. Thetime-out period can be changed by your dealer.

    When the time-out timer activates, the radio will beep for 5seconds then the symbol will ash continuously. Normaloperation will be restored once the PTT is released.

    BACKLIGHTING

    The Liquid Crystal Display and keys are back lit for easyviewing at night. The backlight remains on while the radio isswitched on.

    Adjusting the Backlighting

    The backlight brightness and colour can be adjusted forpersonal preference.

    To make adjustments to the backlighting, press and hold theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) for several seconds. BKLGTwill be displayed indicating the Brightness setting is selected.Briey press theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) to cyclethrough the available settings. Rotate theChannel knob leftor right (or press or ) to adjust the current setting.

    There are three back-light settings available;BKLGT (Brightness Setting): Provides a continuouslyvariable brightness adjustment from very dim to fullbrightness.

    COLOR (Colour Setting): Provides a continuously variablecolour spectrum change via a smooth blend of colours.

    WHITE (Whiteness Setting): Controls the whiteness orcolour saturation of the selected colour from full colour toWhite (no colour).

    TIP:For the deepest colour range, reduce the WHITE setting.

    After making your selection, press and hold theChannelknob (or LVLPRI key) to return to normal operation.

    NOTE: The back-light setting function will automatically timeout after 6 seconds if no further adjustments have been made.

    BANDWIDTH FILTER SETTINGS

    To accommodate the blending of the newer narrowband UHFCB 80 channel plan with the original 40 channel widebandsystem, your radio is tted with two user-selectable receiverbandwidth lters. While either of these will provide superbreceive audio, selecting the wide lter will further increasethe tolerance of the receiver to 40 channel wideband radiosthat might otherwise sound over-modulated or slightly offfrequency on channels 1 40. Selecting the narrow receivelter will increase the selectivity of the radio to stronginterfering signals from adjacent channels.

    To select the desired lter, press and hold theMENU keyto enter the menu, then press theMENUkey repeatedlyuntil NBFLT (Narrowband Filter) orWBFLT (Wideband

    Filter) is displayed. Rotate theChannel knob (or pressor ) to make the desired selection.

    When nished, briey press thePTT to exit from theMenu.

    NOTE:The wideband receiver lter setting is only appliedto channels 1 40. Channels 41 80 always use thenarrowband lter.

    DYNAMIC VOLUME CONTROL (DVC)

    The modulation level of signals heard on the UHF CB band hasalways varied considerably resulting in noticeable differencesin received audio Volume between stations. Generally usershave compensated for this by adjusting the Volume controlfor each incoming signal. With the introduction of 80 channelnarrowband transmissions that use lower levels of modulation,the diversity in received audio Volume is likely to

    increase further.Your radio is able to automatically compensate for thesevariations in received audio level by utilising a DynamicVolume Control . When activated, this feature automaticallycompensates for variations in received audio level resulting ina constant audio output level to the speaker.

    To activate theDynamic Volume Control , press and holdthe MENU key to enter the menu, then press theMENU keyrepeatedly untilDVCOF (Dynamic Volume Control Off) orDVCON (Dynamic Volume Control On) is displayed. Rotatethe Channel knob (or press or ) to make the desiredselection.

    VOICE SCRAMBLER

    Your radio incorporates a simple voice scrambler using bandinversion. The scrambler is compatible with the majority of

    scramblers used by other manufacturers, allowing you to enjoy

    scrambled communications with owners of non-GME radios.Once the scrambler has been activated your transmission andreception will only be intelligible to others using the samescrambler technology.

    To enable or disable the voice scrambler:

    1. Press and hold theMenu key until the radio beeps.2. Briey press theMenu key repeatedly untilENCOF or

    ENCON is displayed.

    3. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to make yourselection. SelectENCON to activate the scrambler encoderor ENCOF to disable it.

    4. Press thePTT to exit the menu.

    REPEATERS AND DUPLEX MODE

    Duplex operation allows the radio to transmit on a differentfrequency to that which it receives. This allows operationthrough repeater stations.A repeater station consists of a linked transmitter/receivercombination installed in a prominent location. The repeateris designed to receive signals on a designated channel andretransmit them on another channel. Repeaters are usuallymounted on hills or tall buildings. The increase elevation

    greatly improves both the receiving and transmitting range ofthe repeater allowing it to receive and retransmit signals toradios that would otherwise be out of range of each other.Normally, UHF radios transmit and receive on the samefrequency known as Simplex operation. However tocommunicate through repeaters, your radio must be able totransmit and receive on different channels otherwise known

    as Duplex operation. Your radio is tted with a Duplex key toallow you to operate through repeaters.The Duplex function can only be selected on channels 18 and4148 as these are the channels that have been allocated forrepeater use. When Duplex is selected, your radio receives onthe selected channel (e.g. CH 1) but transmits 30 channelshigher (CH 31). The repeater hears your signal on CH 31 and

    retransmits it on CH 1 for others to hear.

    Your radio allows you to enable or disable Duplex modeon individual repeater channels. In this way any repeaterchannels that are not being used with repeaters in your areacan be used in Simplex mode for normal direct radio-to-radiocommunications.

    To enable Duplex on a Repeater channel

    1. Select the required repeater channel (1-8, 41-48).

    2. Briey press theDUP key. The duplex symbol willappear on the display accompanied by a high beep.

    To remove Duplex from a Repeater channel1. Select the required repeater channel (1-8, 41-48). If

    duplex is currently selected, the duplex symbol will bedisplayed.

    2. Briey press theDUP key. The duplex symbol willdisappear from the display accompanied by a low beep.

    IMPORTANT: Channels 1-8, 31-38, 41-48 and 71-78 shouldonly be used in Simplex mode if there are no repeaters in ornear your location that operate on the selected channel. Inparticular, avoid operating in Simplex mode on any of therepeater input channels 31-38 and 71-78 unless you areabsolutely sure that there are no repeaters in range using thatchannel. Inadvertently transmitting on an active repeater input

    frequency in simplex mode could cause interference to otherusers on that repeater that would not be audible to your radio.

    PRIORITY CHANNEL

    The priority channel feature allows you to instantly recall anyone of the 80 channels in your radio. This feature can be usedto provide instant access to your working channel or yourlocal repeater channel at the press of key. It is also used inconjunction with the Group Scan mode.

    To store a Priority channel

    1. Select the required channel.

    SCANNING

    Your radio incorporates a scan function that allows a selectedgroup of channels to be scanned for activity. Channels arescanned at a rate of 20 channels per second. If a signal isdetected on a channel, the scan will pause to allow the signal

    to be heard. Once the channel has been clear for 5 secondsthe scan will resume.

    Scan Groups

    Your radio supports two scan groups Open Scan andGroup Scan.

    Open Scan allows a group of channels to be scanned in an

    ascending sequence. If a signal is found, the scan will pauseon that channel. During this time you can press thePTT switch on the microphone and talk on the channel. Once thechannel has been clear for 5 seconds the scan will resume.

    Example: Scanning channels 1 8 in Open Scan

    1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8

    Group Scan allows you to transmit and receive on yourpriority channel, but during periods of inactivity, theradio will also scan a group of other channels. Signalsreceived on the priority channel will have precedenceover those received on the other channels. Similarly,pressing thePTT while scanning will cause the radio to

    revert to the priority channel. Once the priority channelhas been clear for 5 seconds the scan will resume.

    Example: Scanning channels 1 8 with prioritychannel 20 in Group Scan

    Selecting a Scan GroupTo switch between Open or Group Scan modes, briey pressF then pressOS/GS. Open or Group will be displayed to the leftof the channel display for a few seconds.

    To add or remove channels from the scan memory

    1. Check that the radio isnt already scanning. If it is, briey

    press theSCAN key to cancel the scan.

    2. Select the required channel.

    3. Check to see if the scan symbol is displayed onthat channel.

    I. If is displayed, the selected channel is alreadyin the scan memory. Press and hold theSCAN key toremove it. will disappear.

    II. If is not displayed, the selected channel is not inthe scan memory. Press and hold theSCAN key to addthe selected channel to the scan memory. will nowbe displayed on that channel.

    Quick select

    To quickly switch between channels that have been stored inthe current scan memory, briey press theF key then rotatethe Channel knob (or press or keys). This will allowyou to manually step through only those channels that havebeen stored in the current scan group memory. During thistimeF will remain on the display to conrm you are still inQuick Select mode. To exit this mode, press theF key again

    or wait 10 seconds for the function to time out.This option can be used to quickly jump between channels ofinterest or to quickly review which channels are in the scanmemory for editing purposes.

    Scanning in Open Scan mode

    Briey press theSCAN key. A high beep will be heard and

    the scan symbol will animate. During this time the channelnumbers will scroll rapidly as the channels are scanned.

    NOTE:If there are less than 2 channels programmed into thescan memory when you pressSCAN, a low beep will soundand the command will be ignored.

    If a busy channel is located, the scan will pause to allow youto hear the signal but will continue to animate on the displayto indicate that the scan function is still active. Once thechannel has been clear for 5 seconds, the scan will resume.

    If you dont wish to listen to a busy channel you can skip overit by pressing theSkip button on the microphone or rotatingthe Channel knob (or press or ). Scanning will resume

    at the next available channel in memory.

    Default working channel in Open Scan mode

    In the Open Scan mode, your default working channel is thechannel your radio switches to when you press thePTT whilescanning. To dene your working channel simply select therequired channel before you press theSCAN key. e.g. to make

    channel 24 your working channel, simply select channel 24before pressing theSCAN key.

    To talk on your working channel while scanning, simply pressthe PTT. The scan will pause and your radio will switch toyour working channel allowing you to transmit and receive onthat channel. Once your communication has nished and thechannel has been clear for 5 seconds, scanning will resume.

    If your radio pauses on a busy channelother than yourworking channel and you wish to talk on that channel, simplypress thePTT during a break in the conversation. The busychannel now becomes your new working channel, replacingyour previous working channel. Once your communicationhas nished and the channel has been clear for 5 seconds,scanning will resume.

    Scanning in Group Scan mode

    Group scan mode is slightly different to Open Scan modein that the Group Scan allows you to communicate on yourPriority channel while continuing to scan a number of otherchannels. The receiver will scan the other channels ONLYWHILE THERE ARE NO SIGNALS ON THE PRIORITY CHANNEL.

    ChannelSignals being received on the priority channel it will overrideany signals being received on any of the other channels. Inaddition, if you press thePTT at any time the radio will alwaystransmit on the Priority channel.

    Setting up Group Scan

    1. See the Selecting a Scan Group section on page 13 toselect the Group Scan mode.

    2. Store your preferred Priority channel as outlined underPriority Channel on page 12.

    3. Program the required other channels into the scan groupmemory as described above under To add or removechannels from the scan memory on page 13.

    To Scan in the Group Scan mode, briey press theSCAN key. A high beep will be heard and the scan symbolwill animate. During this time the channel numbers will scrollrapidly as the selected channels are scanned with the Prioritychannel being scanned every fourth channel.

    If a signal appears on the Priority channel at any time theradio will switch directly to the priority channel and 3 shortbeeps will be heard. The radio will now stay on the prioritychannel for as long as the channel remains busy. During thistime you can transmit and receive on the priority channel inthe usual way. Once the priority channel has been clear for 5seconds the radio will resume scanning the other channels.

    If a signal appears on one of the other channels, scanningwill pause on that channel and will remain there while thechannel is busy as long as there are no signals on thepriority channel. During this time, the receiver will continue tocheck the priority channel every 2 seconds resulting in a seriesof small breaks in the reception of the busy channel. Once thesignal has gone and there has been no activity on any channelfor 5 seconds, the radio will resume scanning.

    To transmit on the priority channel at any time, simply pressthe PTT. The radio will switch straight to the priority channel.When you have nished your conversation and there hasbeen no further activity for 5 seconds, the radio will resumescanning the other channels.

    If the scan pauses on a busy channel and you dont wish to

    listen to that conversation, rotate the channel switch and theradio will skip that channel and resume scanning.

    If the radio is paused on a busy channel and you want toremain there, briey press the SCAN key. The radio will exitscan and remain on the bust channel. At this point you will nolonger be monitoring the priority channel.

    To resume scanning press theSCAN key again.

    To exit the scan mode and go directly to the priority channel atany time, pressF then PRI.

    Scan Group options

    By default your radio has one Open Scan mode and one GroupScan mode. There may be applications where you have noneed to monitor a priority channel and would prefer to have

    two separate Open Scan modes. Alternately you may preferto have two separate Group Scan modes with different scanchannels in each. Your radio can be programmed to convertthe Group Scan into an Open Scan and vice versa. If this isrequired, please contact your GME retailer to arrange for thisfeature to be activated.

    When two Open Scan or two Group Scan modes are enabled,the Scan Group selection screen will display O1 and O2 for theOpen Scan groups or G1 and G2 for the Group Scan groups.See the section Selecting a Scan Group on page 13.

    NOTE:Enabling or disabling the second Open or GroupScan mode is not a user selectable option. Once enabled ordisabled, the new scan mode becomes a permanent part ofyour radios features. If you decide later that you need theoriginal Scan mode settings restored you will need to returnyour radio to your GME retailer for re-programming.

    CTCSS & DCS

    The standard squelch system is ne for quietening the radioin most applications. However it operates solely on signalstrength which means that it will always open to any signalthat is strong enough. If the channel is busy with otherstations the squelch will be constantly opening which canmake it difcult to determine which calls are meant for you.CTCSS/DCS provides additional selective receiver audio mutingusing sub-audio signalling. When enabled, only signals with a

    matching sub tone will be heard in the speaker. This effectivelycreates a channel that is silent to all trafc except those whouse the same subtone as you.

    Choosing CTCSS or DCS

    CTCSS uses a continuous analogue sub tone while DCS uses adigitally encoded sub tone. Choosing which tone system to usewill largely depend on the other radios you talk with. If othersalready use CTCSS or DCS, you should select the tone systemthat matches theirs. If the users you talk to dont currently useCTCSS or DCS then you can make your own choice. There isno difference in performance or function between the differenttone sets. Both types are included in the radio to maintaincompatibility with other radio systems.

    CTCSS tone set

    There are two CTCSS tone sets available the basic 38 toneset or the extended 50 tone set (see the CTCSS tone chartat the rear of this manual). Both are included to ensurecompatibility with other radios.

    To switch between CTCSS tone sets;

    1. Switch the radio OFF.

    2. Press and hold theSQL key while switching the radioON again.

    3. CTC38 or CTC50 will appear briey.

    NOTE:When switching between tone sets, if you already havea CTCSS tone selected, the radio will try to match the originaltone frequency with one in the new table. If there is no tonematch, the CTCSS tone will be set to OFF and you will need toselect a new tone.

    DCS tone set

    There are 104 DCS tones available (see the DCS tone chart atthe rear of this manual).

    To Select a CTCSS or DCS tone

    1. Select any UHF CB channel 1 80 (excluding 5 and 35).

    2. Press and hold theMenu key until the radio beeps. TheCTCSS Menu option will be displayed.

    3. IfCTCOF is displayed, CTCSS/DCS tones are currentlyswitched off (default). To enable CTCSS tones, rotate theChannel knob to the right (or press ). CTCSS tones willbe displayed asCTC01 CTC50.

    4. Continue rotating theChannel knob (or pressrepeatedly)to scroll past the last CTCSS tone (38 or 50) toaccess the DCS tones. DCS tones are displayed asDT001 DT104.

    5. To see the actual sub tone instead of the tone label, brieypress theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key). For CTCSS tonesthe tone frequency will be displayed in Hz. For DCS tonesthe tone Code will be displayed. Press theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) again to return to the CTCSS/DCS label (referto the CTCSS and DCS Tone Charts on pages 3132.

    6. To switch CTCSS/DCS tones Off, rotate theChannel knob fully to the left (or press repeatedly) untilCTCOF isdisplayed.

    To exit the menu, briey press thePTT or wait for the menuto time-out.

    NOTE:The selected CTCSS/DCS tone will be used globally onany channels that have CTCSS enabled.

    Enabling CTCSS/DCS on a channel (Silent mode)

    Enabling CTCSS/DCS on a channel will prevent the squelchfrom opening unless the incoming signal matches yourselected CTCSS/DCS tone. Other users on the same channelwho are not using your CTCSS/DCS tone will still be receivedby your radio (the icon will still appear on the display) but their voice will not be heard in the speaker. Only whensomeone transmits on the channel using your CTCSS/DCStone will the squelch open to allow the signal to be heard.Channels where CTCSS/DCS have been enabled are said to bein Silent mode.

    NOTE: Silent mode can be enabled on any channel exceptemergency channels 5 and 35.

    To enable Silent mode on a channel:

    1. Select the required channel.

    2. Press and hold theSQL key until a high beep is heard.

    3. An icon (CTCSS) or icon (DCS) will be displayed inthe lower right of the display to indicate Silent mode is nowenabled on that channel.

    NOTE:You cannot enable Silent mode unless a CTCSS or DCStone has been selected in the Conguration Menu. If CTCSS/DCS has been set to OFF, Silent mode is inhibited.

    To disable Silent mode on a channel:

    1. Select the required channel. An icon (CTCSS) or icon(DCS) will be displayed indicating Silent mode is enabled.

    2. Press and hold theSQL key until a low beep is heard.

    3. The (CTCSS) or (DCS) icon will disappear to indicatSilent mode has been removed from that channel.

    IMPORTANT: When Silent mode is enabled on a channelyou should always check the icon for signs of trafc on thechannel before transmitting to ensure you do not accidentallytransmit over the top of another user. Alternatively, you canenableBusy Lockout in theConguration Menu whichwill automatically prevent your radio from transmitting if thechannel is already in use

    Monitor function

    When the current channel is in Silent Mode, the iconmay appear but no sound will be heard in the speaker. Thisindicates that your radio is receiving a signal that does notmatch your CTCSS/DCS tone. If you wish, you can brieymonitor the channel as described below. This temporarilydisables Silent mode, allowing the signal to be heard.

    On the TX3510 and TX3520, press and hold the Volumeknob to monitor signals on the channel. When you releasethe Volume knob , Silent mode is restored and the radio willbecome quiet again.

    On the TX3540 briey press thePWR key.

    Note: On the TX3540 you will only have a brief moment tomonitor the channel for signals as holding thePWR key formore than a few seconds will switch the radio off.

    SELECTIVE CALLING

    Overview

    Your radio has a Selective Calling system known as Selcall thatoperates like a telephone. Your radio is pre-programmed withits own unique Selcall Identication number. If this numberis called by another radio, your radio will beep to alert you. Ifyou do not want to hear any other activity while waiting on achannel, you can select the QUIET mode. Your radio will thenremain quiet to all incoming signals until your Selcall numberis called.

    Your radio will allow you to store up to ten of your mostfrequently called Selcall numbers in memory and each numbercan be labelled for easy identication.

    Selcall identication number

    Your radio is factory programmed with its own unique SelcallIdentication Number (Ident). This number identies yourradio from others in your area. Your radios own Selcall Identwill be displayed for a few seconds to the left of the channel

    display when you rst turn the radio on. You will need tomake your Ident known to anyone who may need to call youusing Selcall.

    NOTE:Although your radio is factory-programmed with aunique Selcall Ident, you can change your Ident to anothernumber if required (seeSelcall Memories on next page).

    Selcall Ident labelsWhen storing Selcall Idents, you can add labels to each oneto make it easier to identify whose Ident you are recalling. Inaddition, if an incoming Selcall matches one of your storedIdents, the label can be displayed instead of the Ident.

    To add or display labels, your radio must be in the ALPHAmode. To switch between ALPHA mode and NUMERIC mode,briey press theF key followed by the ALPHA key. ALPHA orNUMBER will be displayed briey to the left of the channeldisplay to indicate the selected mode.

    The QUIET mode

    Your radio can be set to monitor signals on a busy channel butremain QUIET unless it receives its own Selcall Ident. In this

    way, you wont be disturbed unless someone calls you. Whenyour Selcall Ident is received, the QUIET mode is deactivatedand an alarm sounds to alert you to the call. You can thenconverse normally on the channel. To use the QUIET mode,refer to the QUIET mode section further below.

    NOTE:The QUIET mode overrides the normal Squelch systemto ensure that the radio remains quiet even when the channelis busy. When QUIET is set, you may see the icon appearon the display indicating the channel is being used. However,unless someone transmits your Selcall Ident, nothing will beheard in the speaker.

    You can activate the QUIET mode on individual channels i.e.some channels can be set to remain Quiet while others canremain open to all incoming signals.

    USING SELCALL

    Entering a Selcall Ident

    1. Press theCALL button. is displayed, along with thelast sent or received Selcall Ident. If an ALPHA labelisdisplayed you will need to pressF then ALPHA to switch toNumeric mode.

    2. Press and hold theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) until theradio beeps. The right-hand digit of the Selcall Identwill ash.

    3. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to select the

    required number in the ashing digit position.4. Briey press theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) again to

    select the next digit position.

    5. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to enter all 5 digits as required. TheSelcall number is now ready to send.

    6. Press and hold theCALL button. A long beep will be heard

    and the radio will transmit the Selcall Ident.NOTE:If the call is not sent within 10 seconds of entering thelast Ident digit the Call function will time out and the radio willreturn to normal mode. To exit the mode without sendingthe Selcall briey press theCALL button

    Call acknowledge

    If your Selcall transmission is successful, the radio you calledshould respond with an acknowledge signal - usually twoquick beeps. This will conrm to you that the radio you calledis now alerting its user to your signal.

    Selcall memories

    Your radio is tted with one Call memory and 10 userprogrammable Selcall memories labelled C0 to C9 There isalso one additional location labelled Id.

    Memory locations C0 to C9 are for storing frequently calledSelcall Idents. The additional location labelledId contains

    your radios own Selcall Ident. You should only select thismemory location if you need to change your radios factoryprogrammed Selcall Ident.

    To store a Selcall Ident in memory

    1. Briey press theCALL button. is displayed along withthe last sent or received Selcall Ident.

    2. Rotate theChannel knob clockwise (or press ) to selectthe required Ident memory location C0 to C9 (or select Id to change your radios own Selcall Ident). If an ALPHAlabel is displayed you will need to pressF then ALPHA toswitch to Numeric mode.

    3. Press and hold theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) until theradio beeps. The right-hand digit of the Selcall Ident

    will ash.4. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to select the

    required number in the ashing digit position.

    5. Briey press theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) again toselect the next digit position.

    6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to enter all 5 digits as required.

    7. Now press and hold theChannel knob (orLVLPRI key).

    The entire Ident will ash for a few seconds then the radiowill beep as the new Ident is stored.

    Recalling Selcall Idents

    1. Briey press theCALL button. is displayed along withthe last sent or received Selcall Ident.

    2. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to select therequired Ident memory in locationsC0 to C9.

    3. Press and hold theCALL button to send the Ident.Naming your Selcall Idents

    Your radio allows you to label each Selcall Ident using a 5character name to make it easier to identify callers. If anincoming Selcall matches one of those in your radios memory,the label can be displayed instead of the Selcall Ident.

    NOTE:Before adding an ALPHA label to a Selcall Ident, youmust rst store the required Ident in memory as described left.

    1. Briey press theCALL button. will be displayed alongwith the last sent or received Selcall Ident.

    2. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to select the

    required Ident memory in locationsC0 to C9.3. Briey press theF then ALPHA to select the ALPHA mode.

    ALPHA will be displayed briey.

    4. If the ALPHA label is empty, - - - - - will be displayed,otherwise it will display the last ALPHA label programmedinto that memory.

    5. Press and hold theChannel knob (orLVLPRI

    key) until theradio beeps. The left-hand position of the Alpha labelwill ash.

    6. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to select therequired character in the ashing position then briey pressthe Channel knob (or LVLPRI key) again to select thenext position.

    To exit the CALL TO mode, briey press theCALL button(or simply wait for the Call function to time out). The radio willreturn to normal operation.

    To display the Alpha labels of incoming Selcalls , theradio should be left in Alpha mode. Any incoming Selcall that

    does not match those in the memory will display -NEW-. Todisplay the Selcall Ident of that caller, briey pressF thenALPHA to return to the NUMERIC mode.

    Receiving Selcalls

    When your radio receives its Selcall Ident, an alarm will soundto alert you to the call. Initially the alarm will beep urgentlyat 2 beeps per second, then, if the call is not answered, it willslow to around 1 beep every 3 seconds. It will then continue tobeep indenitely until you cancel it.

    In addition to the alarm, the symbol will appear on thedisplay along with the callers Selcall Ident or ALPHA label toinform you of the callers identity.

    To return the call:

    Press and hold theCALL button for a few seconds until theradio beeps. The callers Selcall will be sent back to the caller.To cancel the alarm:

    Briey press thePTT switch. The alarm will be cancelled andthe channel will be open for normal communication. You cannow talk on the channel in the usual way.QUIET MODE

    The QUIET mode mutes the receiver to prevent incomingsignals from being heard in the speaker until your Selcall Identis received. In this way you can monitor a busy channel forpersonal calls without being disturbed by unwanted signals. Ifyour Selcall Ident is received, the QUIET mode is cancelled anall incoming signals are heard in the speaker.

    Setting up the QUIET mode

    To setup the QUIET mode you must rst tag the channelsthat you want to stay Quiet, then activate the QUIET mode.Once the QUIET mode is activated, tagged channels willremain Quiet to all incoming signals unless your Selcall Ident i

    received. Channels not tagged will remain open to all signalsand will operate normally.

    To tag individual channels for QUIET operation:

    1. Select the required channel.

    2. Press and holdQUIET until the radio beeps.Q will appearto the left of the channel number indicating the selected

    channel is now tagged for Quiet operation.

    To remove the QUIET tag from individual channels:

    1. Select a channel that has been tagged for Quiet operation.Q will be displayed.

    2. Press and holdQUIET until the radio beeps. Q willdisappear indicating this channel is no longer tagged forQuiet operation.

    Activating the QUIET mode

    1. Select a channel that has been tagged for Quiet operation(you cannot activate the Quiet mode unless you haveselected a tagged channel). Q will be displayed.

    2. Briey pressQUIET. will appear on the display.

    Now all channels that were tagged for Quiet operation will beoperating in the Quiet mode.

    De-activating the QUIET mode

    1. Select any channel that has been tagged for Quietoperation. Q and will be displayed.

    2. Briey pressQUIET. will disappear from the display andall channels that were tagged for Quiet operation will nowoperate normally again.

    Receiving signals in the QUIET mode If a normal signal is received on a QUIET channel, the

    channel will appear busy (the icon will be visible) but nosound will be heard from the speaker.

    If a normal signal is received on an Open channel (one thatis not tagged with Q) the signal will be heard in theusual way.

    If your Selcall Ident is received on any channel - Open orQUIET - the QUIET mode will be cancelled and the alarm willbeep to alert you to the call. In addition, the callers Ident or

    ALPHA label will be displayed. All channels will now be openfor normal transmission and reception.

    If you wish to respond to the caller using Selcall, press andhold theCALL button until the radio beeps. The callers Identwill be transmitted back to them causing the alarm in theirradio to be activated.

    To cancel the alarm on your radio , briey press thePTT.

    To return your radio to the QUIET mode , briey press QUIET. will re-appear on the display.

    Scanning in the QUIET mode

    The radio will allow you to scan while the QUIET mode isactive. Using this feature you can monitor a group of Quietchannels or a combination of Quiet and Open channels.

    To Scan in the QUIET mode:

    1. Pre-select the required OS or GS scan group (briey pressF then OS/GS).

    2. Program your scan channels as described under theScanning section.

    3. From those channels, select the ones you wish to remainQuiet and tag each one for QUIET operation (press andholdQUIET).

    4. Select a tagged channel and activate the Quiet mode(briey pressQUIET).

    5. Press theSCANkey. The radio will begin scanning andSCAN and will be displayed, indicating the radio isscanning in the QUIET mode.

    Receiving signals while scanning in the QUIET mode If a normal signal is received on an open channel, scanning

    will pause while the channel is busy and will resumescanning 5 seconds after the channel becomes clear. (If you

    were scanning in Group Scan mode, the radio may switchbetween the open channel and the Priority channel - this isnormal).

    If a normal signal is received on a Quiet channel but yourSelcall Ident is not detected, the signal will be ignored andscanning will continue.

    If a signal containing your Selcall Ident is received on anychannel - Open or Quiet - both scanning and QUIET modeswill be cancelled and the receiver will stay on that channel.In addition, the alarm will beep to alert you to the calland the callers Ident or ALPHA label will be displayed. Thechannel will now be open for normal transmission andreception.

    TIP:To ensure reliable Selcall detection when scanning in theQuiet mode, it is recommended that you restrict the number ofchannels in the Scan group to 4 or less.

    GROUP CALLING

    The Selcall system includes a Group Call function whichallows you to call up to 1000 radios simultaneously. This canbe useful in an emergency situation where you may need totransmit a message to a large number of radios in your group.

    By default, your radio is factory-set to allow up to 10 radios tobe called at once. If your application requires more, you canarrange for your Dealer to re-program this option to allow 100or 1000 radios to be called. The following description assumesthe default Group Call setting of 10 radios.

    The Group Call function works by allowing you to enter aspecial group code into the last digit positions of the SelcallIdent you are sending. The group code appears as an Awhen displayed in the radio. When this group code isreceived, it substitutes for all other numbers in that position.As long as the rst 4 digits of the Selcall you are sendingmatch those of the radios you are calling, their Selcall alarmwill be activated as if their full 5 digit Selcall Idents had beenreceived.

    To achieve this, the 10 radios you are calling must beprogrammed with sequentially numbered Selcall Idents.

    e.g. 14530, 14531, 14532, 14533 . . --> , 14539 Transmitting the Selcall Ident 14531 will only activate the

    alarm in the radio with the Selcall Ident of 14531. Transmitting 1453A will activate the alarms in all radios

    with Idents 14530 through 14539 (a total of 10 radios).

    If the radios in your eet do not have sequentially numbered

    Selcall Idents and you want to make use of this function, youwill need to re-program the Selcall Idents in your radios.

    Programming and sending Group calls

    The process for entering a Group call Ident is the same asentering a normal Selcall Ident.

    1. Press theCALL button. is displayed, along with the

    last sent or received Selcall Ident. If an ALPHA label is

    displayed you will need to pressF then ALPHA to switch toNumeric Mode.

    2. Press and hold theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) until theradio beeps. The right-hand digit of the Selcall Ident willash.

    3. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to select Ain the ashing digit position. This is the special code thatwill create the Group Call.

    4. Briey press theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) again toselect the next digit position.

    5. Continue entering the other 4 digits as required. The Selcall

    number is now ready to send.6. Press and hold theCALL button. A long beep will be heard

    and the radio will transmit the Selcall Ident.

    NOTE:Where your radio allows it, programming group callsfor 100 radios is identical except that you will need to selectA for the last two digits (e.g. 123AA). For 1000 radios youwill need to select A for last three digits (e.g. 12AAA).

    e.g.

    Sending Ident 145AA will call 100 radios with Idents 14500-> 14599

    Sending Ident 14AAA will call 1000 radios with Idents 14000-> 14999

    You can also arrange to send Selcalls to every tenth radio bysetting the second digit to A.

    e.g.

    Sending Ident 145A5 will call radios 14505, 14515, 14525,14535, 14545 . . -> 14595

    Call acknowledge in Group mode:

    There is no call acknowledge when sending group calls. This isto prevent all the radios in your group from trying to respondto your Selcall transmission at the same time.

    Storing Group call Idents:

    Group call Idents can be stored in memory in the same way asa standard Selcall Ident.

    Receiving Group calls:

    Receiving a Group call is identical to receiving a normal Selcallexcept that the alarm sound is a LOW tone beep instead ofthe normal High tone beep. The callers Ident or ALPHA labelappears on the display in the usual way.

    RECEIVE (RX) ONLY CHANNELS

    The radio includes support for up to 95 user programmableRX-Only channels with frequencies in the range 403 520MHz. Frequencies can be stored in ve separate channelbanks labelledA to E, each containing up to 19 channels.In addition, each RX-Only channel can be assigned anindividually programmable Alpha label to help identify thatchannel when it is selected. Frequency and channel bankselections are accessed through the conguration menu.

    Selecting Channel Banks

    Before programming or recalling channels you should ensureyou have selected the required channel bank. The 5 channelbanks can be accessed through the Conguration menu.The default channel bank is labelledRX-A.

    To select a Channel Bank

    1. Press and hold theMenu key. A high beep will be heardand the radio will enter the conguration menu.

    2. Briey press theMenu key repeatedly until theRX-channel bank option is displayed.

    3. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to selectfrom one of ve channel banksRX-A throughRX-E.

    4. When nished, press thePTT to exit the menu.

    Programming RX-Only channel frequencies

    RX-Only channels are switched off by default. To programRX-Only channels you will need to activate the channel editorwhich will then allow access to channels 81-99 in the currentlyselected channel bank. RX-Only channels can be programmedwith frequencies in the range 403 520 MHz.

    To program RX-Only frequencies, your radio must be inNumeric mode. If your radio is in Alpha mode briey pressF -

    ALPHA so that NUMER is displayed.To activate the Channel Editor

    The frequency step is the space between frequencies whenthe Channel knob is rotated (or key is pressed). Thefrequency step can be set to either 12.5 kHz or 25 kHz. Thedefault is 25 kHz. You should select a frequency step thatmatches the channel allocations in the frequency band you areprogramming. When selecting 25 kHz or 12.5 kHz steps, theappropriate wideband or narrow band lter is automaticallyselected to ensure optimum performance.

    1. Press and holdMENU until the radio beeps.

    2. Briey pressMENU repeatedly until the frequency stepis displayed.

    the frequency or to the left (or press ) to decrease thefrequency. The display will show the frequency to thenearest 10 kHz.

    e.g. 468.425will display as:

    4. To advance through the frequencies more quickly, brieypress theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key). The frequency willnow adjust in 1 MHz steps. As you approach the desiredfrequency, briey press theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key)again to return the original 25 kHz/12.5 kHz steps.

    5. Once your desired frequency is displayed, press and holdthe Channel knob (or LVLPRI key) until the radio beeps.The frequency is now stored under your selectedchannel number.

    e.g. 458.325 MHz stored under CH 90

    6. Repeat steps 1 5 to program other channels.

    NOTE:The frequency tuning is live which means the radio isactually listening to the frequencies you are selecting. You canuse this feature to locate and store active frequencies whileyou are tuning.

    To program more than 19 channels, you will need to switch toanother channel bank. Simply press theMENU key repeatedlyuntil theRX- Channel Bank option appears then selectanother Channel Bank. Once selected, press theMENU keyrepeatedly to return to the frequency programming option and

    continue programming your preferred frequencies.To close the Channel Editor

    Switch the radio OFF then ON again to close the channeleditor and restore normal operation. Your programmedfrequencies will now be accessible from theChannel knob (or and keys). Remember, if you have stored channelsinto different channel banks, you will need to select theappropriate channel bank to access them.

    NOTE:Under normal operation, only those channels that havebeen programmed with frequencies will be visible. Channelsthat were marked with OFF- in the channel editor will nolonger be visible.

    Deleting an RX-Only channel

    To delete an RX-Only channel;

    1. Enable the Channel Editor.

    2. Select the channel you wish to delete.

    3. Press and hold theMENU key until the radio beeps.4. Rotate theChannel knob all the way to the left (or press

    repeatedly) until OFF is displayed.

    5. Press and hold theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) to storethe new setting.

    6. Switch the radio OFF then ON again to restorenormal operation.

    The deleted channel will no longer be visible.

    Displaying the RX-Only channels frequency orAlpha label

    By default the radio displays the Signal Strength meter to theleft of the channel number. You can congure the display toshow the Frequency or the Alpha name of theselected channel.Before starting, ensure the radio is in the Numeric mode (pressF then ALPHA so that NUMER is displayed).

    1. Select an RX-Only channel (the following menu option isonly available when an RX-Only channel is selected).

    2. Press and holdMENU until the radio beeps.3. Briey pressMENU repeatedly untilS-MET appears.4. Rotate theChannel knob to the right (or press ) until

    ALPHA is displayed.

    5. Press the PTT to exit theMenu.

    The radio will now display the channel frequency to the left of

    the channel number whenever an RX-Only channel is selected.To display the channels ALPHA label

    Briey pressF then ALPHA. ALPHA will appear briey thenthe channels Alpha label will be displayed to the left of thechannel number. If the Alpha label is blank, then an Alphalabel has not yet been set for this channel. Follow the stepsright to enter your preferred Alpha label.

    Adding names to your RX-Only channels

    NOTE:You do not need to activate the channel editor tomake changes to RX-Only channels that have alreadybeen programmed.

    1. Select an RX-Only channel. The channel frequency will bedisplayed to the left of the channel number.

    2. PressF then ALPHA to switch to Alpha mode. ALPHA willbe displayed briey.

    3. Press and hold theMENU key until the radio beeps. Thecursor will ash in the left character position.

    4. Rotate theChannel knob (or press or ) to select therequired character. Press theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key)to advance to the next character position.

    5. When the desired name is displayed, press and hold theChannel knob (or LVLPRI key) to store the name.

    6. Briey press thePTT to exit and return to normal operation.

    INSTALLATION

    GENERAL

    Your radio is supplied with a slim, slide on mounting cradle. Asthe radio contains a built-in speaker, the cradle can be screwedor bolted to any convenient location in your vehicles cabin(under or above the dash or on the centre console) using themounting slots provided in the cradle.

    In the case of the remote mount TX3520, the remote head can

    be installed in a convenient location inside the cabin allowingthe main unit to be hidden away under the seat, in the glovebox or even in the boot if required. In this case an extensionspeaker will also be required.

    When planning your installation, avoid locations that are closeto heaters or air conditioners.

    TX3510 & TX3540 INSTALLATION

    For maximum sound projection from the internal speaker,we recommend the cradle be mounted above the radio tominimise any obstruction of the speaker. Alternatively, if itis necessary to mount the unit in a less audible location, anextension speaker can used. The extension speaker plugs intothe extension speaker socket on the radios rear panel.

    The TX3520 remote head can be installed inside the cabin withthe main unit hidden away in the glove box, under the seator in the boot if required. Install the remote head bracket intoa convenient location near your driving position using screwsor double sided tape. Loosen the gimbal knobs and slide theremote head into the slots in the bracket. Adjust the remotehead for the desired angle then tighten the knobs.

    The mounting of the main unit is identical to that of theTX3510 and TX3540 models. If the main unit is installed ina remote location, you will also need to install an extensionspeaker inside the cabin. The extension speaker plugs into theextension speaker socket on rear panel of the main unit.

    Fitting the controller microphone

    Plug the 8 pin plug into the socket on the front of the mainunit or alternatively you can use the adapter and extensioncable supplied with the radio. If the main unit is not easilyaccessible this adapter will allow you to bring the microphone

    socket to a more convenient positionAttach the microphone clip to a convenient location near yourdriving position using screws. Slide the bollard on the back ofthe microphone into the clip to secure it.

    DC POWER CONNECTION

    The radio is designed for 13.8 volt DC, negative earthinstallations only (i.e. where the negative terminal of thebattery is connected to the chassis or frame of the vehicle).

    There are two recommended methods of installation.Radio remains ON when the ignition switch is OFF

    Connect the radios negative (black) lead to the vehicleschassis, or if preferred, directly to the batterys negativeterminal. The radios positive (red) lead should be connectedvia the 2 amp fuse to the batterys positive terminal.Alternatively, the positive lead could be connected into thefuse box at a point that has +13.8 volts continuously available(on the battery side of the ignition switch) via the 2 amp fuse.

    High voltage detection

    The radio has a built-in, high voltage detection system towarn you if an overvoltage situation occurs. If the powersupply voltage exceeds 18 volts DC, the channel display willash hi dc for 5 seconds when the unit is rst turned on, orat the time the voltage exceeds 18 volts. In addition, whentransmitting, the TX indicator will ash and the transmitter willselect low output power.

    If the overvoltage warning appears you should switch yourradio OFF and disconnect it from the power source, beforelocating the cause of the trouble.

    Once the High Voltage warning has been triggered, and youhave xed the source of the problem, you will need to switchthe radio OFF then ON again to reset it.

    Note: The power source should never exceed 30 volts.

    It is essential to select a good quality, high efciency, 477 MHzantenna. A poor quality antenna or one not designed for thespecic frequency band you are using will give verypoor performance.

    NOISE SUPPRESSIONThe inherent design of FM transceivers results in a high levelof resistance to ignition and electrical interference.
