Hello Mr. Karopkin,
I have broken up your original text and numbered each item to address each of your concerns.
the specific methods of disposal of geese for all prior years – In 2009 and 2010 Canada Geese were euthanizedby methods approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and disposed of in accordance withlocal, state and Federal regulations and permits. In 2011 New York State (NY) allowed for the first time thecommercial processing of wild waterfowl. During the planning process a NY processor could not be identified, soarrangements were made to have a facility in Pennsylvania process the birds. Closer to the dates of the roundupsa NY processor was identified and subsequently some birds were processed in NY. Prior to 2009 the only CanadaGeese removed from New York City (NYC) were from Rikers Island and disposed of in accordance with local, stateand Federal regulations and permits.
1.
humane regulations governing the treatment of animals in the custody of USDA –USDA Wildlife Services (WS)follows guidelines developed and recommended by the AVMA, USDA, and any conditions outlined in our permits.
2.
and any available photographs or video footage of past-year round ups in New York City – WS has notphotographed or video recorded the capture and removal of resident Canada Geese in NYC.
3.
I am requesting a schedule of dates when you intend to survey New York City parks, as well as the dates, times and locations of planned roundups in New York City during 2012 – Surveys are conducted once a monthat each former collection location and, prior to the molt, WS also surveys any potential habitat owned by NYC. No specific schedule is developed for surveys. Dates, times and locations for removal of resident Canadageese have not been developed, are dependent on numerous variables, and would not be shared in advance.
4.
I would like to observe the 2012 Canada geese roundups, (or arrange for third-party access) to the plannedCanada goose removal operations in New York City this upcoming summer – For several reasons, includingminimizing stress to the wildlife, only those staff working on an activity or the partners requesting it, are includedin proposed activities.
5.
All work undertaken to manage damage related to overabundant resident Canada geese is carried out underpermits from the waterfowl‐management agencies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and the NYS DEC. Thank
