s ie s o v er elect ions in McDonel and the SOC booth at the A c tivit ies C arnival se e m to be te m p e s ts in a tea pot.
The dorm heads had a valid point in not wanting to hold an elect ion which was poorly run and in which no one knew the candidates . West McDonel Head Advisor E m e r y C u m m in s ’ s s ta tem en t to the effect that AUSG just doesn’ t understand the situation s e e m s quite true.
Student governm ent le a d e r s se e m displeased. According to their constitution, they are right ; however , the action of the two d o rm ito ry head adv is o r s is not a plot to usurp student governm ent power. It might be an exam ple of a c o n stitution that is too inflexible.
The best solution to the e l e c tion difficulty was proposed by d i r e c t o r of student activit ies and organizations Louis Hek- huis. He wants to m eet with AUSG to study changes in the elect ion ordinance . The o r d i
nance should be changed to m eet the changing University problem of newly-opened r e s idence halls.
As to the SOC c o n t r o v e r s y in which gambling is alleged to have o c c u r e d . Student J u d ic iary is acting as if the C osa N ostra and numbers r a c k e t e e r s were an act ive p a r t of cam pus life. The off -cam p u s organization may have vio lated a s tate gambling law. A
ch a s t i s e m e n t may be in o r d e r , but probation s e e m s just a little too d r a s t i c .
The danger in getting involved with these types of co n t r o v e r s i e s , is that AUSG may becom e too preoccupied with them to handle the m a jo r issu es of student governm ent .
AUSG Speaker Bob Hencken indicated that this y e a r may be one of the b es t in his toryfor student governm ent . If AUSG can get away from flyspeaking his prediction may com e true.

1. Excuse me, sir. I ’m conducting a poll for the college newspaper. I wonder if I might ask you a few questions?
Be my guest.
. In your opinion, what are some , of America’s most significant achievements in the past 50 years?
Huh?
3. Let me put it this way. During the last half century what new ideas have led to important benefits for the American people?
Well, uh — there’s the two-platoon system.
4. I’ll rephrase the question. Sine 1912, what developments can think of that have made the lol of the working man easier?
Now you’re getting trickv.
5. Give it a try.
Well, speaking off the top of mv head, 1 might say stretch socks.
I’m sure everyone would agree they’ve been useful. But isn’t there something with a bit more social significance that comes to mind?
There certainly is. There’s ’ Group Insurance, the
principle of which is to help
provide protection for those who need it most and can afford it least. Pioneered ant developed bv Equitable, it has proved most efficaeiou Today, the working man and his family enjoy a broad spectrum of protection provided by Group Insuranc For that reason, I would most emphatically suggest its inclusion among the significant achievements. Bu I still think the two-platoon system is pretty important.

• B O O M !
Today, foregoing levity, let us turn our keen young minds to the principal problem facing American colleges today: the population explosion. Only last week four people exploded in Cleveland, Ohio—one of them while carrying a plate of soup. In case you’re thinking such a thing couldn’t happen anywhere but in Cleveland, let me tell you about two other eases last week—a 45-year-old man in Provo, Utah, and a 19-year-old girl in Xorthfield, Minnesota. And, in addition, there was a near miss in High Point, North Carolina—an eight-year-old hoy who was saved only by the quick thinking of his cat, Fred, who pushed the phone oflf the hook with his muzzle and dialed the department of weights and measures. (It would, perhaps, have been more logical for Fred to dial the fire department, but one can hardly expect a eat to summon a fire engine which is followed by a Dalmatian, can one?)
But I digress. The population explosion, I say, is upon us. It is, of course, cause for concern but not for alarm, because I feel sure that science will ultimately find an answer. After all,
A b * -
four yeovieexPlodei rtCffmndhas not science in recent years brought us such marvels as the inaser, the bevatron, and the Marlboro filter? Oh, what a saga of science was the discovery of the Marlboro filter! Oh, what a heart-rending epic of trial and error, of dedication and perseverance! And, in the end, what a triumph it was when the Marlboro research team, after years of testing and discarding one filter material after another—iron, nickel, tin, antimony, obsidiun, poundcake—finally emerged, tired hut happy, from their laboratory, carrying in their hands the perfect filter cigarette! Indeed, what rejoicing there still is whenever we light up a Marlboro which comes to us in soft pack and Flip- Top Box in all fifty states and Cleveland!
Yes, science will ultimately solve the problems arising from the population explosion, hut meanwhile America's colleges are in dire straits. Where can we find classrooms and teachers for today's gigantic influx of students?
Well sir, some say the solution is to adopt the trimester system. This system, already in use at many colleges, eliminates summer vacations, has three semesters per annum instead of two, and compresses a four-year-course into three years.
This is, of course, good, but is it good enough? Even under the trimester system the student has occasional days off. Moreover, his nights are utterly wasted in sleeping. Is this the kind of all-out attack that is indicated?
I say no. I say desperate situations call for desperate remedies. I say that partial measures will not solve this crisis. I say we must do no less than go to school every single day of the year. But that is not all. I say we must go to school ¿4 hours o f every day!
The benefits of such a program are, as you can see, obvious. First of all, the classroom shortage will disappear because all the dormitories can be converted into classrooms. Second, the teacher shortage will disappear because all the night watchmen can be put to work teaching solid state physics and Restoration drama. And finally, overcrowding will disappear because everybody will quit school.
