Mother Nature tried our patience and that of the participants. We had swells, rain, some lightning and even some scary winds. There were a couple of close calls with a late morning squall line affecting people fishing farther from shore, and we are gratefull that no one was injured or lost! The weather on Sunday turned worse. It was not fishable due to 6-9 foot wind-driven waves! Hi Everybody,

Well, summer is just about over. I hope everyone gotout to do some of that great Coho fishing. They sure gotbig while they were here. I couldn’t believe all the rain-bows this year. I have been fishing Lake Michigan forover 40 years, and I've never seen so many Rainbows. Idon’t know what happened to the Chins. I think it might

be the lower stocking. I did hear the D.N.R. is going to stockmore this year. There is still a lot of time to get some of the

Chins that are there so go get them. The fish-ins were well attended this year. Those of you that don’t come down

and join in it’s your loss. The guys tell everybody where they fished and what theyused. I’m sure it will put more fish in your boat. The last fish-in was rough. Thewind just blew from the north and didn’t care that we had a fish-in. There were justa few boats in the harbor. I can say that there were more brown trout weighed in thatday than ever in the history of fish-ins. That’s just the story on fishing. The brats andburgers were great. Karl’s makes some of the best brats you can eat. Thanks Karlfor the great food. We should all thank Kurt Pokrandt and all his helpers for tak-ing time to set up the fish-in. I would like to say thank you to the ladies for the fan-tastic deserts.Brew City was a little shaky. The weather was a big concern, but Mother Na-

ture was on our side. The fishing was hard this year. Some of the fishermen gotlucky and found the fish. The winner this year was in a small boat. It isMark Braultin Purgatory. I don’t think there should be any more complaints about the biggerboats and charter fishermen having a bigger advantage. My opinion is that catch-ing fish is 50% skill and 50% luck. Sometimes more luck.I do think we should tell Todd Pollesch and everybody that helped Thank You

for a great tournament. I didn’t hear any complaints from anyone. I do hope to seeeverybody back next year. The club donated $1500.00 to the Kettle Moraine Hatchery this year. The Ozau-

kee club did the same. They needed to buy new filters to keep those rainbowshealthy. I asked them to come to one of our club meetings to show us how they arebeing used. We will post a date to let you know when they will speak.

3 Million Walleye Stocked in Wisconsin WatersNearly 3 million walleye were stocked in

dozens of lakes and rivers waters recently. Thefish, up to 2 months old and 2" long, were har-vested from the Art Oehmcke Hatchery, theTommy G. Thompson Hatchery, Lake MillsHatchery, and, for the first time in 20 years,Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery. New coolwaterfacilities at that century-old hatchery allowedcrews there to return to producing walleye. It's good news for future walleye fishing op-

portunities in Wisconsin," says Dave Gieht-brock, fish production manager. "The longerwinter led to later egg collection, which causeda logistical complication at some hatcheries, butthe cooler water temperatures were good for thewalleye, and we were able to pull off successfulrearing at our hatcheries."Walleye are stocked to provide fishing op-

portunities where otherwise there would be

none, and to help restore self-sustainingwalleye populations in the receiving wa-ters. The majority of the state's walleyefisheries are naturally reproducing butstocking plays an important role. How long it takes walleye to reach

legal size depends on the water wherethey're stocked and regulations, but counton two to five years before they are likelyto turn up in the frying pan. The fish havebeen raised at the four hatcheries for thelast month or two, living in hatcheryponds that DNR fertilizes to help fuel pro-duction of algae. Zooplankton in the pondeat the algae, and the young fish eat thezooplankton. Now that the plankton andalgae supplies are depleted, it's time to getthe fish out. Another indication of a population in distress is the agestructure. Forty-three percent of fish caught were from the2005 year class, followed by 2003 (13%) and 2002 (11%).No 2- or 3-year-old perch were caught. In a healthy population, most fish are less than five years

old. In the 2011 graded mesh assessment, more than 70% ofthe perch were at least six years old. Also troubling was the sex ratio: 76% of all perch caught

were female. The graded mesh assessment is conducted at a time when

fish are well mixed in terms of sex and year class."We've seen swings in sex ratio before, but typically we

have about 60% males," Hirethota said.Tissue samples from the

fish are being evaluated for ab-normalities, including "hor-mone copy cat syndrome" inwhich estrogen in lake watercauses hormonal problems formale fish. Results won't be known for

some time, Hirethota said.Abnormalities also were

seen this spring during theDNR's annual perch spawningassessment on Green Can Reefoff Milwaukee. In 2011, 68%of the perch found were fe-male, a reversal of the findingsfrom 1990 to 2008, when 86%were male.Of the male perch found

this spring, few were activelyexpressing milt, Hirethota said.Though the perch fishery has largely relied on natural re-

production, the DNR stocked modest numbers in the lake inthe 1970s and 80s.The dwindling perch population has renewed calls to

stock perch. A citizen resolution that calls for stocking perchin Lake Michigan has been advanced this year to the GreatLakes Committee of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. The current plight of the perch has anglers relying on an-

other virtue - adaptability. Fishing for trout and salmon onthe big pond has been very good this year off Milwaukee andother ports.

the tight line September 2011 7

Anglers are famous for their optimism. But when itcomes to the yellow perch population in Lake Michigan, the positive outlook is being replaced by realism."I keep the salmon rod with me now every day," said

Ron Metzger of Milwaukee, a regular on the Milwaukeepiers. "I get more action on it."Once a staple of sport and commercial fisheries in com-

munities from Kenosha to Manitowoc, perch numbershave dwindled to modern-era lows, according to recent es-timates.Perch have suffered from years of extremely poor re-

cruitment, or survival of young fish, since the early 1990s.The decline of the native fish is thought to be linked to

drastic changes in the lake's food web brought on by inva-sive zebra and quagga mussels in the last two decades. In addition to poor recruitment, a troubling sex imbal-

ance has recently emerged in the population, prompting re-search into a hormonal syndrome."There is certainly concern for the perch," said Pradeep

Hirethota, senior fisheries biologist for the Department ofNatural Resources.According to population estimates, the number of perch

in the Wisconsin waters of Lake Michigan has declinedfrom 24.6 million in 1990 to 2.6 million in 2000 to 316,210in 2009, the last year for which data are available. In response to the decline, Wisconsin closed the com-

mercial perch fishery on Lake Michigan in 1996. Illinoisand Indiana also closed their commercial perch fisheries.Michigan allows some tribal harvest of perch. The sport regulations vary among states: Wisconsin has

a five-fish daily bag limit, while Illinois and Indiana allowanglers to keep 15 per day and Michigan allows 35.The season is closed from May 1 to June 15 in Wis-

consin to protect spawning perch. Illinois shuts down forJuly and Indiana and Michigan have no closure.Despite the closed commercial seasons and restrictive

sport regulations, perch have not staged a comeback. The DNR's 2011 graded mesh assessment, considered

the best overall gauge of the lake's perch population, foundjust 283 perch, fewest on record. The assessment is done each winter in waters east of

Milwaukee. Hirethota said the test has always yielded atleast 1,000 perch.

Plight of the Yellow PerchPaul Smith, Outdfoor EditorMilwaukee Journal Sentinel

Your GLSF Club has partnered with the Fishing Has No Boundaries Organization to help them out with their annualouting on Saturday, September 10th. They have several physically challenged individuals who love to fish, and who wouldlike to try their hand at fishing Lake Michigan. We need volunteers with boats to take these people out a ways and try forsalmon and trout. The volunteers with their boats need to be at the Lake Park State Park docks nearest to Discovery Worldbetween 08:00 and 08:45am Saturday morning. We can use boats of most sizes. Larger boats, able to accommodate a wheel-chair can be used for wheelchair using fisher-persons. 19’ to 20’ boats can be used for those people with smaller physicalchallenges. The National Guard will be available to assist in the boarding and de-boarding processes for people in wheel-chairs.This information can be found on the front page of our website: http://www.glsfclub.net/, and the link to Fishing Has

No Boundaries is: http://www.fhnbinc.org/chapters/milwaukee.htm.All volunteers will be treated to lunch. If you can volunteer your time and boat, please let me know by responding to this message. The 2 Chairmen of Fishing

Has No Boundaries would like a boat count so they can tentatively line-up fisher-people with the volunteer boats and cap-tains. So far I have 2 boats but could use about 8-10 more.If you cannot volunteer your boat, perhaps you could help out the club by volunteering to assist in the set-up and tear down

of the GLSF Club tent. This is the same tent we use for Brew City and it takes 4-8 people to put it up and take it down. Thesevolunteers need to be at Lake Park State Park at 7am on September 10th. I will pick-up the tent from the Sailing Center at6am and have it at the State Park before 7am. I could use 1 volunteer at 6am at the Sailing Center, if someone wanted to helpthere, too. We will be taking the tent down around 3-4 pm and taking it back to the Sailing Center. Again, volunteers areneeded. (Reminder – Volunteers will be able to enjoy a thank you lunch.)If you can help with the tent, please respond to this message to let me know that you can help. For the tent volunteers, you can park for free, but you have to go all the way around to the south side of the island. You

can do this by going down Erie St. to the river and turning left, following the river to the red lighthouse and continuing tothe State Park parking area. The tent will be placed on the hill above the boat docks closest to Discovery World.I hope to see many of you on Saturday the 10th and almost everyone else on Tuesday, the 13th.

Have a safe and enjoyable Fall.
