Developing a Project – Concept to Completion• Concept – ideas and aspirations
• Supported by the whole Club?
• Forming a sub-committee – mix of skills and experience
• Common project themes:
– Pavilion– Changing rooms– Fine turf – square and outfield– Non Turf Practice facilities and match play– Social provision– Machinery and storage– Ancillary equipment – covers, sightscreens etc
Developing a project – Feasibility Study• Producing a feasibility study is the best way to establish a plan for
the project
• A feasibility study will help with attracting funding
• It need not cost the earth but some professional fees may be required
• What to include:
– Aims and objectives– Basic design and costs– Project management and professional fees– Usage and users – community benefit, other sports, increased participation– Maintenance and sustainability– Potential funding – funds banked, funds to be raised, grants and loans– In kind contributions –labour and/or materials– Possible timescales
Specific feasibility issues• Non Turf Practice
– Read ECB ‘Guidance note to the provision and installation of Non Turf Pitches and Net cage facilities’
– Use an ECB Approved Supplier– Think carefully about location – orientation, slope, trees etc.
Raising Funding• Internal fundraising
• Grants and Loans– ECB booklet ‘Sources of Grant Aid and Funding for Cricket
Clubs’– EWCT Interest Free Loan Scheme– Lords Taverners– Sport England– Local Authority– Waste Management Funds – BIFFA, SITA etc– Coal Regeneration
• Writing applications– Consider the aims and objectives of the funders– Get pre-application advice if possible form the organisations– Sell the attributes of the project – community benefits, other
sports
Executing the project – issues to consider
• Project management – professional and from the Club
• Cash flow – managing sources of funding and contractor expectations
• Timescales – Planning Permission– Building Regulations– CDM regulations– Funding applications and restrictions on grants (spending
within financial year etc)– Seasonal construction requirements
Maintaining and Sustaining
• Projects need to be used
• Usage should not exceed carrying capacity
• Maintenance should be budgeted for and built into pricing structure
• Training for staff should be provided
• A sinking fund should be established for expected replacement
• Specialist contractors used where necessary
Case Study – Stones Cricket Club, Pavilion Extension
• The project took 2 years to complete in 2 phases
• The Club generated over £30,000 of fundraising through Sportsman's Dinners, Auction Evenings, Raise the Roof, Halloween parties, Bonfire nights, Xmas parties, Pig Racing, Band Nights, and Rambles
• A further £16,000 of grants were raised from sources including Ripponden Parish Council, Calderdale Community Fund and Calderdale MBC
• Over £35,000 worth of in kind labour and materials were provided – the Club involved the whole community
• An ECB Interest Free Loan of £15,000 provided the final funding
