GlobeMed is a student-driven non-profit organization working to make an impact in the movement towards global health equity. We at the University of Michigan are one chapter in the network of 46 across the country. Here in Ann Arbor, we partner with two community health organizations: the Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation in Detroit, Michigan and Tiyatien Health in Zwedru, Liberia. We make frequent visits to Detroit for the Health, Eating, Activity, and Learning workshops, and last summer we were able to send two members to Liberia for our first GROW internship.

This year, GlobeMed at U of M’s fundraising project is supporting Tiyatien Health in a unique and pioneering way! Our goal is to raise $10,000 of unrestricted funds that can be used in a practical way that will help keep the program strong and advance health and social justice. The funds can be used to cover costs of gas for generators and vehicles, emergency money and traveling costs, just to name a few! Staff Retreats We have had two staff retreats in the beginning of each semester. With a game of Amazing Race towards Social Justice, we were able to have some wild bonding times welcoming our new members and exploring our Ann Arbor campus. In order to truly gain the heart of GlobeMed for this campus, we discussed reasons for joining GlobeMed, about our partners, and how GlobeMed can make a positive impact on our communities.

Tackling Poverty: GHU Global Health U

The new ghU curriculum is drastically different from the way the committee was organized in the past. The national office has worked tremendously hard to improve and strengthen ghU since the end of last school year and continues to provide support through today. With this curriculum, every week we have interactive discussions learning about GlobeMed’s values and the relationship between poverty and health. This January, we started track 2 of the program, which explores where poverty comes from and how it can be combated from different economic viewpoints. The goal of this track is to learn about the

causes of poverty and consider the ways in which poverty can be alleviated.

This new curriculum is more focused, organized and easily accessible to all members of GlobeMed. It also allows for more creativity on the part of ghU committee members, as they are given some direction with how to lead weekly lessons but still have the chance to try their own ideas for activities and discussion questions. The overall focus/emphasis is on the relationship that exists between poverty and health. It appears to be highly successful thus far, and we are confident that it will only get better and grow more over the coming years.

Mental Health Training It was a great opportunity to see the work that Tiyatien Health carries out on a day-to-day basis and to begin to understand how the GlobeMed at UMich chapter has been a part of it. -Colin Yee

Tiyatien Health One of our goals is to raise funds and awareness about the healthcare crisis in Liberia. To accomplish this goal, we have partnered with Tiyatien Health. Located in Zwedru, Liberia, this non-profit health organization provides free healthcare to the community. TH has an "accompanier" programwhich consists of community health workers who provide in-home care, helppatients travel to and from the clinic, and provide financial aid to patients. TH is important to the community because more than 60% of Liberia lacks access to proper health care. TH not only provides healthcare, but it also reduces the unemployment and poverty rates in Liberia.

2012 GROW Trip This year's GROW Internship will take place at TH's headquarters in Boston. The interns will have the opportunity to have a true insider's look at what it takes to run a non-profit, and to participate in the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the "sexy" medical relief projects that TH implements in Zwedru. Not only will they gain work experience, they will also have the chance to network with TH employees, including Peter Luckow and Raj Panjabi, and further strengthen Michigan and TH's partnership.  This year's GROW internship will provide skills and relationships that will last a lifetime.

Rebuilding health and hope in remote corners of liberia.

Heal Workshops

"I am continually amazed by the leadership at Joy-Southfield.  Not only do they embody the core values of GlobeMed and do amazing work in Detroit, but they actively try to find ways to mentor and guide members of our chapter."

-Aileen X

Farmers Market

GlobeMed has been able to continue helping our local partner at Joy Southfield Health and Education Center that provides health educational resources for families and students in the community specifically through HEAL workshops.

HEAL Reunion

This past year, GlobeMed helped plan a reunion for participants of the HEAL workshop. 6 months after each session of the HEAL workshop. We created activities for the kids and discussion questions for the adults in order learn what they felt really stuck with them from the workshops. Participants were also able to share the obstacles they faced after the workshops were over.  This valuable information was used to improve the workshops for future families.

2012 J-S GROW Trip

For this summer’s 2012 Joy-Southfield GROW internship, we’re expecting to hear lots of great opportunities and experiences! The market intern for this summer will be working closely with the leadership at Joy-Southfield and working on expanding the farmers’ market. Currently, there is a gardening program which will be expanding. We are also working on finding more plots of lands that students can work in. There is even a possibility of a hoop house (aka greenhouse). With the huge USDA grant we received next summer, there will be lot of positive changes.
