2. GLOBAL VETERINARY ANTI-INFECTIVE MARKET
Anti-infective drugs are vital in the treatment of infections in animals which includes companion and
farm animals. In many countries, 50% of all anti-infectives production is for animal husbandry.
Antibiotics are added to animal feed (particularly that of pigs and poultry) for mass prophylaxis against
infections or for growth promotion, and to water to treat fish diseases. Anti-infective drugs are
considered important for sustainable livestock production and for the control of animal infections that
can be passed on to humans as zoonoses. Keeping the connection between animal health and human
health, certain anti-infective drugs administered to animals are also used for disease control in humans.
Due to these factors the global market for veterinary anti-infectives is estimated to be worth $4.53
billion in 2014.and is expected to grow at a healthy CAGR of 8.84%, the market is set to reach $6.92
billion by 2019.

3. MARKET DYNAMICS
3.1 MARKET DRIVERS
3.1.5 INCREASING ZOONOTIC AND FOODBORNE DISEASES
Zoonoses are infections and diseases that are naturally transmissible directly or indirectly, for example
via contaminated foodstuffs, between animals and humans. The severity of these diseases in humans
varies from mild symptoms to life-threatening conditions.
The number of salmonellosis cases in humans decreased by 5.4 % compared with 2010 and by as much
as 37.9 % compared with 2007.This could be possible only when there is sufficient awareness about
animal health and animal diseases which can get transmitted to humans.
A statistically significant decreasing trend in the European Union was observed over the period 2008-
2011. In total, 95,548 confirmed human cases were reported in 2011. It is assumed that the observed
reduction in salmonellosis cases is mainly a result of the successful Salmonella control programmes in
poultry populations. The number of listeriosis cases in humans decreased slightly compared with 2010.
A total of 5,648 food-borne outbreaks were reported in the European Union, resulting in 69,553 human
cases, 7,125 hospitalisations and 93 deaths. With increasing cases of zoonotic and foodborne diseases,
animal health is getting more attention in case of disease affecting animals, food safety and its linkage
to animal health.
