Flowlines, Flexible Risers, Umbilicals, and JumpersAs the search for oil and gas goes into deeper waters, new technologies are required to produce these new fields. These new technologies include Hybrid Riser Towers (HRT), Turret Buoys, Flexible Risers, Steel Catenary Risers (SCR), Umbilicals, Jumpers, and more. Each of these new technologies requires some form of high-performance syntactic foam buoyancy to perform efficiently. Cuming Corporation uses the same materials for these new applications as we have for more than 30 years, and we have the experience and engineering resources to design and build unique buoyancy products for these new applications.

C-FLOAT Drilling Riser Buoyancy Modules are designed to be easy to lift, store, and handle, and they work in concert with other rig equipment. Integrally molded flexure lugs inside the modules isolate bending to avoid damage to the riser or buoyancy module. Built-in lift points mean safe, quick handling, while smooth outer contours with recessed hardware minimize the chance of hang-up. Unique self-shoring features prevent modules from rolling on the rig deck and allow safe stacking.

Construction OptionsC-FLOAT Drilling Riser Buoyancy Modules are built to take the daily wear and tear of shipboard storage and handling. All standard-FLOAT modules include our proprietary High Integrity “HT” construction with internal reinforcement for extra safety, even if the module is damaged. Additional strength, impact resistance, and longevity can be provided by ruggedized “RGD” options that incorporate aramid and/or metal reinforcements engineered into the module structure.

Attachment MethodsC-FLOAT Drilling Riser Buoyancy Modules may be attached to the riser in any one of several methods. Simple straps around the outer diameter are tightened by tensioners fitted into molded pockets. Internal bolted fasteners can be used to secure the modules to the riser. Aramid is normally recommended for straps, while type 316 stainless steel is usually the choice for the fastening hardware.

Hardware and AccessoriesCuming Corporation supplies a complete line of hardware and accessories for C-FLOAT Drilling Riser Buoyancy Modules. Stop collars, also called thrust collars, are normally required at both ends of each riser joint to prevent slippage and movement. Riser guards may be desirable to avoid damage to bare riser joints. Fairings and other VIV reduction devices are often required in high current areas.

C-FLOAT Drilling Riser GuardC-FLOAT Drilling Riser Guards make possible the safe and easy handling of “slick joints” (riser joints not equipped with buoyancy modules) onboard a drilling rig at sea. Strong, lightweight accessories that do not add or subtract buoyancy to or from the drill string, riser guards are designed to stack securely and prevent joints from shifting or rolling during storage and handling. Riser guards protect the riser choke and kill and auxiliary lines against damage while running or retrieving the riser, and they provide sturdy lift points for MUX cable clamps and other accessories. Designed with dimensions that match standard C-FLOAT buoyancy modules, riser guards are carefully vented and ported to ensure proper operation of dump valves, telescopic joints, and other special purpose parts of the riser string.

C-FLOAT Products

C-fLoaT sDfStandard Density Syntactic Foam

This epoxy/glass composite material has become the standard for the industry. Developed and refined over the last 30 years, C-FLOAT SDF continues to provide the best in versatile and cost-effective riser buoyancy.

C-fLoaT LDfLow-Density Syntactic Foam

This option combines all of the best features of proven standard construction with reduced density, providing more buoyancy in a smaller package. The result is a significant boost in efficiency with the reliability of conventional materials.

C-fLoaT ULfUltra-Low Density Syntactic Foam

When conditions demand the lowest possible density for the greatest depth, this material offers the highest performance buoyancy available. Special processing and advanced aerospace-grade materials combine to offer high strength and low weight.

Epoxy syntactic foam is the basic constituent of C-FLOAT. It is a rigid epoxy plastic filled with tiny (100–200 microns in diameter), hollow borosilicate glass microspheres. The components are mixed under a vacuum, injected under vacuum into the mold, and then cured under a combination of high temperature and pressure to form a lightweight solid. When this syntactic foam is used as an infill matrix around macrospheres (described below), the resulting tightly bonded composite is a “three-dimensional honeycomb” structure with very high strength.

Fiberglass macrospheres help lower the density of the composite system and increase buoyancy per unit volume. The macrospheres are thin-walled, hollow epoxy/fiberglass composite spheres, approximately 6 mm (1/4") in diameter.

Syntactic foam is inherently impact-resistant and damage-tolerant. C-FLOAT syntactic foam products are constructed with a tough integrally molded fiberglass composite skin. The result is a rugged line of buoyancy systems that function effectively even when damaged or abused.

Distributed Buoyancy Modules by Flotation TechnologiesDistributed Buoyancy Modules are a critical component of deepwater production systems and are used to maintain a pre-defined riser configuration such as a lazy, steep, or pliant wave in flexible risers, umbilicals, and SCRs. These configurations allow the vessel a full range of surface movement without putting undue stress on the subsea lines and to decouple wave action from the seabed. Made up of two major components, the internal clamp and the buoyancy element, distributed buoyancy modules are engineered and manufactured by Cuming Corporation to meet the stringent requirements of long-term service while minimizing installation time.

The internal clamp is the most important and complex component of the module. It securely attaches the exterior buoyancy module to the riser, resisting axial movement throughout all design conditions. It also transfers the buoyancy load to the riser. These conditions include loads from various sources as well

as expansion and contraction of the riser during service which may last up to 30 years. The clamp is specifically designed to meet these stringent criteria. The internal clamp body is made of high-density syntactic foam that is extremely resistant to creep and provides additional buoyancy to the module. All metallic components are made from super duplex stainless steel, providing superior corrosion resistance and high strength.

The exterior buoyancy element provides uplift for the riser system. Each half-shell is designed with an internal recess to engage the composite clamp. A tapered opening at the ends of the element allows local bending of the riser without contact with the element.

Buckle Mitigation Buoyancy Modules by Flotation TechnologiesAt higher temperatures and pressures, a pipeline’s natural tendency is to relieve axial stress by buckling. Left uncontrolled, this buckling can have serious consequences for the integrity of the pipeline. To control the formation of lateral buckles along the pipeline and alleviate stress on those buckles, we have designed the Buckle Mitigation Buoyancy Module, a cost-effective and efficient solution that uses buoyancy to decrease lateral friction and reduce the severity of buckle bending.

Deepwater BuoysCuming Corporation manufactures deepwater buoys of every size and shape and for every application. Very large buoys are made up of syntactic foam elements that are molded and tested at our factory prior to assembly. We can test elements to a service depth of 14,000 feet, and with proper design, 30 years of service life is possible. We also supply all hardware (CRA or coated steel) for buoys, including thru members, shackles, banding, fasteners, etc.
