Three unique opportunities for social work students to gain:

Exposure to social work practice in different locations and culturesin Asia, Europe and the Middle East;

Comparative perspectives on similar social issues and how they are approached differently outside of mainland United States;

New practice skills and techniques used with individuals and communities;

Informed view of social support systems at both the family and societal level in Asia and Israel as well U.S. military bases in Europe;

Awareness of major policies and social service programs in three distinct regions of the world; and

Four units of credit

Participants

Each program is designed for a limitednumber of graduate-level social workstudents who are interested in:

creative practice,

cross-cultural training , and

client empowerment.

Each program is of particular value to students interested in communities and community organization, children and families, work with minorities and immigrants, group work and social

justice issues.

Global Immersion in Military Culture: U.S. Forces Abroad in Germany

A unique global immersion program in Europe designed to prepare students to meet the critical need for culturally-competent behavioral healthcare providers who work with military veterans.

A three-week interactive learning program that will take place at Los Alamitos Army Airfield in California and U.S. military installations in Germany including Ramstein

Air Base, the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the U.S. Army Garrisons in Baumholder and Heidelberg.

An immersion experience that will not only increase students’ military fluency, but will develop their deeper

understanding of systems of care in place for military personnel during deployment and the transition back home.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL GAIN

•Ability to identify the military’s emphasis on mission readiness, support of service, honor and cohesion, and how these influence social work delivery at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.

• Understanding of the impact of military transitions and stressful life events throughout life course of a military family.

•Knowledge of issues related to loss, stressors, changes, and transitions over a veteran’s life cycle as pertinent to designing interventions.

•Demonstrative knowledge base related to risk and protective factors associated with deployment, military service, and other aspects of life and role transitions that service members and veterans experience

Social Conflict, Empowerment and Creative Practice in

Israel

A unique program in Israel for individuals interested in Israel’s current and longstanding social conflicts andits creative problem-solving practices focused on community and client empowerment and social change.

An opportunity to explore Israel in an intensive two-week immersion visit that spans various regions, sub-cultures and communities including urban and rural, Jewish and Arabic, and immigrants.

An immersion into the social and cultural life of Israel through daily interaction with faculty and students at Tel Aviv University and others in Israel.

•Exposure to international social work through understanding social problems and social problem-solving in a different culture.

Modern Day Slavery:Combating Human Trafficking in the

Philippines

A unique cultural immersion program in the Philippines designed to increase participants' understanding of this form of modern day slavery and the global efforts underway to combat the problem.

An opportunity to take part in a three-week program will begin with pre-departure sessions on the USC campus followed by two weeks in the Philippines, where participants will be immersed in the social, cultural and political life of the country through daily interaction with faculty and students at the University of the Philippines and others.

An immersion consisting of lectures with faculty and guest speakers, discussion panels, experiential and reflective exercises, and group-based assignments. The program will also include site visits to social service, community and human rights organizations, as well as cultural excursions.

perspectives

Each of the three-week programs willtake place in May and June 2012and will be comprised of pre-departure sessions in Southern California followed by two weeks at the following locations:

Europe May 23-26 (May 27 – June 8, 2012)

Israel May 24 and June 4 (June 8 – 23, 2012)

Philippines May 14-18 (June 3-17, 2012)

Note: The above listed dates are tentative and subject to change.

Daily instruction will combine university faculty and guest speakers, discussion panels, and site visits to community organizations

Program Costs

Tuition: $5,680 + Fees ($1,420 unit x 4 units – SOWK599)

Program Fee: $1,950 + Transportation

LAX to Tel Aviv (Est. $1,300 - $1,900 round-trip)

LAX to Frankfurt (Est. $900 - $1,200 round-trip)

LAX to Manila (Est. $1,200 - $1,800 round-trip)

Program Fee includes: Lodging (double room occupancy, breakfast included), local transportation, weekday lunches, cultural activities, tours, and field visits.

Other Fees include: Required health insurance if not enrolled in mandatory USC health insurance plan. Participants are also responsible for their own visas (if required) dinners, weekend lunches, snacks, non-program local transportation and other incidentals.

Application Process:

Application and $250.00 non-refundable deposit are due by Friday, February 24, 2012. (Checks made out to the University of Southern California.)

The sooner you apply, the better chance you will have in being accepted into the program of your choice.

Program fee balance is due no later than Friday, April 20, 2012.

Note: You must be enrolled in SOWK599 in order to participate on the program.

Financial Aid

If you are receiving financial aid, you may also be able to use it toward international study. See the School’s Financial Aid Office.

Special note for 2nd or 3rd year students who are scheduled to graduate in May.

You will be able to take one of the three global immersion courses as

your last elective.

In doing so, you will be able to walk during the May commencement, but

your degree will not be conferred until August 2012.
