Introduction

This WANTED Analytics, a CEB Company, report highlights the most in-demand job skills and positions for some of the world’s five largest economies*: the United States, China, Germany, Japan, and the U.K. It is designed as a tool for hiring managers, human resources, talent acquisitions professionals, sourcers and recruiters to understand trends in the talent marketplace, and is based on WANTED Analytics’ competitive and job market intelligence data compiled from 1 billion unique job postings across 22 countries. Data presented in this report was com-piled from 1 July to 30 September, 2015 and compared to the previous quarter, 1 April to 30 June 2015.

*Based on International Monetary Fund’s Countries with the largest GDP.

Worldwide Executive Summary

Analysis of hiring demand across the world’s five largest countries reveals that there’s an increasing need for companies to be more consumer-centric as customers and prospective buyers demonstrate their influence and power. With the prevalence of social media, consumers have a louder voice and a receptive audience. Companies are taking note which is demonstrated in the broad need for quality and marketing skills.

Quality assurance leads skill demand in multiple sectors. Businesses want to ensure their services and products are meeting consumers’ standards so they can positively influence public opinion and reviews and discourage the spread of negative online exposure. An increasing focus on marketing competencies shows that companies are differentiating themselves from competitors in the market to solidify their positioning and maintain and grow their customer base. This is further demonstrated in a common and largely increasing need for professionals with customer relationship management (CRM) related skills. Demand for CRM skills is widespread, being required in industries such as finance and insurance, and the types of tools required are changing.

Bilingualism is an in-demand attribute in 4 out of 5 top countries, with the UK being the exception. Administrative and sales jobs have the greatest need for bilingual candidates. In the US, retail sales are responsible for the majority of hiring of candidates with bilingual-speaking abilities.

Tech positions continue to be in high demand across a wide span of industries, professions, and geographies. Java and Linux were required in the greatest number of job ads, with Java appearing among the most in-demand skills in 3 out of 5 top countries.

While certain market trends become evident with changing hiring demand, this also signals that qualified and skilled can-didates with these abilities will become increasingly hard to find and companies need to begin thinking about retention strategies to retain their skilled workforce.

Demand for technical and programming skills dominate China’s largest occupational category, but gradually give way to marketing related skills in both senior and administrative occupations. Of note, skills demand is rising in the majority of China’s occupational categories. Marketing and sales skills remain in heavy demand, but demand growth appears to be declining.

In China, hiring market data points belie reporting of an economic slowdown. Although marketing and sales skills show a steep decline in demand, the majority of skills and occupations within the People’s Republic show healthy demand increases from the second quarter of 2015, with technical and programming skills topping the list of the experience most requested by China’s employers. Of note, China’s demand for professional and technical workers in China is more than double that of the U.S.

German employers’ heavy demand for employees with quality assurance and quality control experience transcends occupational industry, even surfacing in the health care category.

The German economy shows a high demand for manufacturing design and process quality, with four of its most in-demand skills involving these areas. Computer aided design skills are in particularly high demand, most likely due to robust hiring for manufacturing occupations.
