Absolutism• Divine Right: belief that kings were
allowed rule by God (Mandate of Heaven?)
• absolutism: kings rule with absolute power
• The Prince: book by Machiavelli, should rule with fear, not love
• Examples of Absolute Rulers: Ferdinand and Isabella (Spain), Louis XIV (France), Peter the Great (Russia)
• England: Magna Carta – limited monarchy and created Parliament; English Civil War – Charles I abolished Parliament and then executed; Restoration – Charles II invited back, but brother took over (Catholic); Glorious Revolution – William and Mary (Protestant) took the throne but signed English Bill of Rights
