As a part of the activities of Madhya Pradesh State Bamboo Mission, Government had approved for the conduct of its first landmark event “Madhya Pradesh Bamboo Fair 2014” at Bhopal Haat, Near DB Mall, Bhopal from January 26th to 28th 2014.
The second Bamboo Mart (Bans Bazaar) 2014 was organized at Urban Haat Bazaar, RTO Road, Near Lalbagh, Indore from March 8th to 10th 2014.
Highlights of the EventBamboo Fair, Bhopal Bamboo Mart, Indore
One-stop sourcing platform for showcasing and displays of bamboo artifacts from all bamboo districts of MP, including products by communities, private entrepreneurs, companies etc.
Demonstration of modern equipments / tools for bamboo applications including; this will include training of local bamboo artisans for new advanced tools and techniques.
Inviting Exhibition of bamboo artisans along with their products from bamboo excellence States, like North East States, Uttarakhand, Kerala etc.
Exhibition and sale of bamboo artifacts by artisans and entrepreneurs of MP and other States

The Hon’ble Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (APCCF) and Mission Director of Madhya Pradesh State Bamboo Mission (MPSBM) “Dr. A K Bhattacharya” inaugurated Madhya Pradesh Bamboo Fair 2014'on 26th January 2014.
The Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Anil Oberoi, inaugurated the Bamboo Mart on 8th march 2014, the 100th International Women’s Day.

In all, more than 30 exhibition stalls were set up to display various products made from Bamboo.
Individual Artisans, Master craftsmen, NGOs, SHGs, Small scale industries, Government controlled institutions, machinery manufacturers and organizations from outside the State and country like China working in the Bamboo sector participated in the fair and displayed their products.

A buyer-seller meet was organized on 26th January, 2014 as a one of the major activities during the fair.
In this event Mission Director and other bamboo experts like Mr. Kamesh Salam from World Bamboo, Mr. Sunil Joshi From Vedha, Nagpur, Mr. C S Susanth, etc interacted with rural artisans, entrepreneurs, etc.
They discussed about the challenges and opportunities in the bamboo sector.
A three day training program was organized for more than 350 women participants from bamboo rich districts of Madhya Pradesh by the bamboo jewelry experts.
Designers like Neera Sarmah from Kolkata and Khuku Biswas from Guwahati were special attractions with enthusiastic participation from the young and the old alike.

In this meet, presentation was given by Mr. Kamesh Salam and Mr. CS Susanth about the upcoming development in the bamboo sector.
Rural artisans and entrepreneurs also got the opportunity to interact with the experts and discuss their problems related the bamboo sector
Participants showed great enthusiasm during workshop and learned new designs of bamboo jewelries and artifacts from the experts.
Cultural Evening
Bamboo Fair, Bhopal Bamboo Mart, Indore Different cultural programs
were organized in all the three days of the event, all the groups were from different districts of Madhya Pradesh.
Bamboo based performances like Korku dance, Gedi dance, etc stunned the stage and audiences.
The main attraction was the international bamboo group from Kerala called Bamboo Symphony which used around 60 different musical instruments made by bamboo to produce the music of nature.
Another group from Meghalaya performed a cultural dance which is performed during the harvesting season to share happiness.
Cultural programs from different places of Madhya Pradesh like Bhagoriya, etc set the stage stunned during their performances.

competition‘Need to increase
productivity’
A bamboo artifact & design competition was held in which students from premier architecture colleges of Indore like SDPS and IPS participated to ignite their minds and skills to produce a better output in the form of bamboo artifact and jewelry.
The competition had two categories "Jewelry and artifact", in which groups of one student and one rural artisan participated.
Bamboo expert Dr Barathi gave presentation on increasing bamboo production in India.
He informed that in China average national productivity of bamboo is 3 to 4 tons per acre while in India it was only 500 gm from an acre, though ironically area-wise India leads in the world in area under bamboo plantation.
We can enhance productivity to even 40 tons per acre, considers Dr Barathi, through dripirrigation techniques, tissue culture, high density plantation and choice of proper species of the crop.

A unique bamboo structure has been made by women bamboo architect from Spain, Ms. Fatima Martin.
The structure was made at the entrance gate of the Bhopal Haat, so that all the visitors can view the unique bamboo arch design.
The structure was made up in less than 1 week with the whole effort of team from banskhedi under the supervision of Ms. Martin
Martin, who conceptualized and helped build the delectable bamboo canopy greeting at the entrance of the exhibition ground, said India was a huge market for bamboo products.

First time a unique bamboo cuisine was setup by MPSBM in collaboration with Institute of Hotel Management, Bhopal (IHM).
Objective is to introduce and familiarize the visitors with new recipes of bamboo prepared by lecturer and students of IHM.
Honorable Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh appreciate the innovative idea of setting Bamboo Cuisine.
A total of 10 recipes were prepared during the Fair.
Special bamboo recipes developed through the Institute of Hotel Management, Bhopal were also on offer for the gastronomically inclined.
Under the guidance of faculty Pradip Kumar, the students of IHM served delicious curries like chicken bamboo curry and prawn bamboo fare among others that titillated the taste buds, leaving them asking for more.

He observed immense response from bamboo artisans and entrepreneurs from MP and other states.
He advised that such Haats will provide exposure and provide market opportunity for the products of rural artisans.
Divisional commissioner, Indore division, Mr. Sanjay Dubey praising the event said that artisans and rural women should take full benefit of such Marts.
Dr. Bhattacharya appreciated the overwhelming participation and the enthusiasm shown by all the stakeholders in making the event a success.
