ISSUE 7 TERM 4 7 November 2012

We are now well into Term 4 and already many of our students have had their yearly examinations and assessments. This is an extremely busy time for both students and staff with end of year examinations and reports being finalised. Even though examinations have concluded students need to be aware the work they complete in class up until the end of the year will lay the foundations for the skills required in the following academic year as well as inform the classes into which they will be enrolled for 2013.

The 12 Graduation Ceremony

On 21st September, 2012 Glenwood High School held a heart-warming and moving Year 12 graduation ceremony. The years have slipped by so quickly and the Year 7 students of 2007 were very proud, accomplished young men and women during this momentous occasion which was celebrated with parents, families, students and staff. In a few short years Glenwood High School has built a tradition which ensures the graduation ceremony is one never to be forgotten with the whole school community supporting and farewelling are most senior cohort.

A special thank you must go to the Year 12 Year Adviser, Mr Vafa Fadaghi, the Assistant Year Adviser, Mrs Zehra Medhi, Head Teacher Science, Mrs Tina Hosen, SASS member, Mrs Laura Gleeson, and Deputy Principal, Mr Lance Berry, for organising a most memorable occasion for Year 12 and their families and friends.

Year 11 and so it begins for you …

This term our Year 11 students begin their Higher School Certificate studies in earnest. All class work and assessment from day 1 of term 4 contributes to the successful award of the HSC. Some students are taking up the challenge of Extension courses while others are consolidating their curriculum pattern and choosing courses best suited to their skills and abilities. All Year 11 must maintain their focus and work hard right to the end of term 4.

Early this Term, Year 11 students and their parents had the opportunity to sit in on a presentation by Margot Braithewaite from the Board of Studies (BOS), Ms Belinda Young, Deputy Principal, and Mrs Perry, our Careers Adviser. These ladies detailed how the HSC works and gave options on how to apply for University and TAFE.

NAPLAN Results

All parents of Year 7 and Year 9 have received the results for the 2012 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy. These were given to students to deliver to parents towards the end of last term so if any parents did not receive these results please contact the school. On the whole these results reflect steady progress amongst many of our students in literacy and numeracy. Students in both years are particularly skilled in the area of spelling with results well above the state and national average. Similarly, in the areas of writing and grammar /punctuation both Year 7 and 9 results were above the state average. In numeracy, Year 7 have shown a very pleasing improvement on last year’s results.

Although NAPLAN is only one measure of student ability the results give teachers valuable data to inform future programming. If you wish to discuss these results please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Staff Appointments

It gives me great pleasure to announce the permanent appointment of Mrs Belinda Davis to the Home Economics Faculty. Mrs Davis has been working as a temporary staff member at Glenwood for five years and it is wonderful that the Department of Education and Communities has recognised her work and appointed her permanently to our staff.

Similarly, Ms Rachel Powter has been selected on merit as a permanent member of the HSIE Faculty replacing Mr Dave Merrick. Ms Powter has been working at Glenwood High School as a temporary teacher for two years and is a very welcome addition to our permanent staff.

Ms Erin Cummings has also been appointed permanently to the English Faculty through merit selection after working here temporarily for two years. Glenwood High School is extremely lucky to have such quality teachers on staff.

FROM THE DESKS OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow, the important

thing is not to stop questioning” Albert Einstein

Wow the end of another year is fast approaching. As everyone starts their Christmas preparations (those who are organised) at Glenwood the staff and students are busy with final assessments, exams and reports. A busy time for all.

Year group updates:

Recently we have farewelled our Year 12’s although many having been visiting to obtain that last bit of advice and support from their teachers. As the HSC draws to a close it is nice to hear from Year 12 as they talk so positively about their exams and how well they think they have done. Most are relieved the whole experience is over and some are still apprehensive about the looming results day. Whatever they are feeling we hope they have a good time winding down and celebrating their successes and achievements safely. We know they are looking forward to their formal, as are the staff who will attend and who will delight at seeing their transformations from school uniform to glamour dress and suits. Their mixed feelings as they are sad at closing a chapter, but are excited as embark on the next phase of their life adventure. We at Glenwood wish each and every one of our 2012, Year 12 students the best for their future.

Year 11 have been passed the batten and have begun the final year of their HSC studies. They, like many before them, will find how fast the time passes. Our advice Year 11 is, to manage your time productively, don’t be idle and commit now. In this way you will reach your full potential and maximise your results. Year 11 received their HSC Course Assessment Booklets earlier this term. Whilst the key points in the policy were clearly explained to the students, it is expected that all Year 11 students will have carefully read the rules and procedures outlined in this. This is extremely important to ensure success. Parents and guardians are encouraged to make themselves familiar with this information, so that they can best support their child. The Assessment booklet can be obtained from the school website. This outlines when all tasks are due so students can be prepared. By now everyone of year 11 should have sourced this document. Our new group of leaders in the Captains and Prefects have quickly adapted to their roles. They have been exemplary and are proving to be outstanding role models.

Our current Year 10 students are finalising their year and are showing that they are ready to tackle the demands and rigours of Stage 6 learning. They are the first group of students to experience the path to a RoSA, however most will continue on to complete the HSC. For Year 10, any outstanding work should be considered due now and submitted to teachers in order to avoid an N Determination in the Stage 5 Course and a resulting failure to achieve the Record of School Achievement. Subject selections for Year 11, 2013 have been finalised. In Year 11 students at Glenwood High school must study a minimum of 12 units at school and in 2014 these students will be expected to study a minimum of 11 units at school for the HSC. Students of Year 9 have been challenging themselves in all areas of learning. They have shown that they have enjoyed the year doing elective subjects as well as the mandatory curriculum. Some outstanding work has been completed and we encourage Year 9 to continue to commit to their learning throughout the term. We are confident that all will achieve the results they deserve.

Page 5: GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL · 2019. 10. 16. · The 12 Graduation Ceremony On 21st September, 2012 Glenwood High School held a heart-warming and moving Year 12 graduation ceremony. The

The term is also marching on for Year 8. The elective subject selection process for Year 9 2013, has been very smooth, with the majority of students obtaining their first choice selections. Many have indicated that they ‘can’t wait’ for next year and are excited at the prospect of experiencing new subjects.

Year 7 recently received their NAPLAN results which have all been sent home. If you did not receive yours please contact the office. Students have worked very hard leading up to these exams and continue to do so as they experience for the first time high school final year assessments and exams as well as the rigours and demands of this process. They are definitely no longer small fish in a big pond as they have grown and developed over the past 3 terms.

Education changes:

With the current changes in Education such as the Australian curriculum many parents have questions as to how is education changing for their child. The Board of Studies website is a valuable source of information. This website has been designed to make it quick and easy to navigate and access support material anytime, anywhere on a variety of devises. http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au. There are many links to answer questions regarding the RoSA, HSC, and NSW syllabuses and how these address the Australian curriculum. The Board of Studies has developed new NSW K–10 syllabuses for English, Mathematics, Science (including Science and Technology K–6) and History incorporating Australian curriculum. For the first time the syllabuses are available in an interactive online format.

There are many items on this web site of particular interest to parents. The parent page is designed to assist you by providing direct links to the most recent and relevant information. Some are listed below:

This article explores questions about what to look for in a tutor, what you would want your child to achieve and tips on what to ask a potential tutor. http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/homework-tips/facts-about-tutors

Planning a Future:

Year 10 students have had to give their future some serious consideration with subject selection decisions for Years 11 and 12. Many questions asked along the way include ‘What do I want to do?’ ’Where will it lead?’, ‘Am I making the right choice?’

Also a reminder to all, the PE/sports uniform must not be worn to school. Students must wear their full school uniform and change for PE and sport. GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL AUTHORITY TO CHANGE STUDENT RECORD DETAILS

Dear Parent/Guardian

The need for our school to keep records up to date and accurate is extremely important, particularly in the case of emergencies. Please fill in the following change of record details and return to the school at your earliest convenience.

ATTENTION

If you have moved out of the Glenwood High School local enrolment area you need to attach a letter to the Principal outlining the reason for your move. The letter must also explain why you wish your child to remain at the school as a non local enrolment, instead of moving your child/children to their local High School.
