“And now we welcome the new year, full ofthings that have never been.” Rainer Maria Rilke
Welcome to our 20th Anniversary Season! Every year, whenwe come to this exciting moment, standing on the precipicejust as our concert season is about to begin, we feel asthough we are indeed about to see “things that have neverbeen,” discover untold stories, hear familiar melodies in abrand new way… How that feeling is amplified this year!
Had someone told us, 20 seasons ago, where Off Centrewould be today, we likely would have called them liars –presenting Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire? Stravinsky’sL’histoire du soldat? Not a chance… Well, here we are. Alongwith those two Master Works, we also celebrate therepertoire that has been with us all along: our 20th AnnualSchubertiad and a programme devoted entirely to musicinspired by the struggles of love.
In honour of our 20th birthday, we are also launchingdérangé, a new two concert mini-series that will celebratean even more “out-of-line” and interdisciplinary approachto concert-giving (held at Toronto’s aptly named The MusicGallery).
As always, we are so thrilled to be presenting some of ourfavourite Canadian guest artists in programmes thatpromise to be as off centre as ever. And we cannot wait toshare them with you, our extended musical family.
Inna Perkis and Boris Zarankin
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
dérangé –which derives from theFrench word for “taken out of line,” but isalso associated with insanity!– is a two-concert pilot project at the intersectionof Canadian Contemporary, Classical,Jazz and Folk Music celebrating a more“out of line,” interdisciplinary and
creative approach to performing this repertoire. In keeping withOff Centre’s tradition of creating dialogue between artist andconcert-goer, each dérangé concert will feature a kind of round-table discussion facilitated by Torontonian artists and experts intheir fields.
Dérangé concerts begin at 7:00 p.m. and take place at The MusicGallery (with informal pre-concert receptions beginning at 6:30 p.m.).There will be no intermission. Purchase tickets online or at the door.

ALL FOLKED UP February 12, 2015What is folk music? It is music that appeals to the most basichuman conditions: love, suffering, loss, happiness, and mostof all, the struggles the natural world presents to the human.Featuring Shepherds Heard (Joseph Brent, mandolin; NicoDann, drums; Rebecca Henessy, trumpet; Michael Herring, bass; Ilana Zarankin, soprano), Hobson’s Choice (FelicityWilliams, voice; Rebecca Hennessy, trumpet; MichaelDavidson, vibraphone; Harley Card, guitar) and pianist InnaPerkis, we explore the exciting musical possibilities born in themoment of arrangement - or derrangement - of folk material.Ethnomusicologist and guitarist Nate Renner is our host.
THE PARTY May 14, 2015The Party is a wistfully imagined meeting of our favourite and diverse composer friends on one programme. The RSVPsare still pending, but we have invited Classical composersChristopher Mayo (Toronto-born, London-based) and ShawnJaeger (Kentucky-born, New York-based), and Jazz composersAnna Webber (Kelowna-born, New York-based) and MichaelDavidson (Toronto born and based) to join us for an eclecticmusical celebration featuring new and old (but not too old)works by each of these composers. Keeping the conversationflowing (and the proverbial wine glasses full) is host andsinger Alex Samaras.
$25.00 GENERAL ADMISSION (includes one pre-concert refreshment)$15.00 STUDENTS & ARTS WORKERS (available at the door) “A new approach to concert giving…an offbeat format
for an afternoon concert…is what makes this salonseries so attractively different.”

Soprano CarlaHuhtanen, mezzo soprano Emilia Boteva and tenor Charles Syperform the glorious music inspired by the most tempestuousrelationships.
