Every year, when we come to this exciting moment, standing on the precipice just as our concert season is about to begin, we feel as though we are indeed about to see “things that have never been,” discover untold stories, hear familiar melodies in a brand new way… How that feeling is amplified this year! Had someone told us, 20 seasons ago, where Off Centre would be today, we likely would have called them liars – presenting Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire? Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat? Not a chance… Well, here we are. Along with those two Master Works, we also celebrate the repertoire that has been with us all along: our 20th Annual Schubertiad and a programme devoted entirely to music inspired by the struggles of love. In honour of our 20th birthday, we are also launching dérangé, a new two concert mini-series that will celebrate an even more “out-of-line” and interdisciplinary approach to concert-giving (held at Toronto’s aptly named The Music Gallery). As always, we are so thrilled to be presenting some of our favourite Canadian guest artists in programmes that promise to be as off centre as ever. And we cannot wait to share them with you, our extended musical family. Inna Perkis and Boris Zarankin BOARD OF DIRECTORS dérangé –which derives from the French word for “taken out of line,” but is also associated with insanity!– is a two- concert pilot project at the intersection of Canadian Contemporary, Classical, Jazz and Folk Music celebrating a more “out of line,” interdisciplinary and creative approach to performing this repertoire. In keeping with Off Centre’s tradition of creating dialogue between artist and concert-goer, each dérangé concert will feature a kind of round- table discussion facilitated by Torontonian artists and experts in their fields. Dérangé concerts begin at 7:00 p.m. and take place at The Music Gallery (with informal pre-concert receptions beginning at 6:30 p.m.). There will be no intermission. Featuring Shepherds Heard (Joseph Brent, mandolin; Nico Dann, drums; Rebecca Henessy, trumpet; Michael Herring, bass; Ilana Zarankin, soprano), Hobson’s Choice (Felicity Williams, voice; Rebecca Hennessy, trumpet; Michael Davidson, vibraphone; Harley Card, guitar) and pianist Inna Perkis, we explore the exciting musical possibilities born in the moment of arrangement - or derrangement - of folk material. Ethnomusicologist and guitarist Nate Renner is our host. THE PARTY May 14, 2015 The Party is a wistfully imagined meeting of our favourite and diverse composer friends on one programme. The RSVPs are still pending, but we have invited Classical composers Christopher Mayo (Toronto-born, London-based) and Shawn Jaeger (Kentucky-born, New York-based), and Jazz composers Anna Webber (Kelowna-born, New York-based) and Michael Davidson (Toronto born and based) to join us for an eclectic musical celebration featuring new and old (but not too old) works by each of these composers.
