The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Right Honourable Eric Milligan, (1995 – 2003) took Glenkinchie to heart as The Edinburgh Malt and took every opportunity to present it to visiting dignitaries, celebrities and politicians. On his travels abroad to promote the interests of the City of Edinburgh he always carried Glenkinchie as a gift to those in the ‘Airts and Pairts’ he had travelled to impress. One of the most famous recipients was Nelson Mandela, then President of South Africa, when given the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh by the Lord Provost whilst he attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in October 1997. More recently Nancy Sinatra was delighted to receive Glenkinchie as the result of a chance meeting/opportunity. Glenkinchie – The Prestoungrange Malt What is good for Edinburgh may not always be good for Prestonpans of course, but in choosing which whisky distillers to officially appoint for Prestoungrange there was never a moment’s hesitation. It is served on all baronial occasions and takes especial pride of place at The Prestoungrange Gothenburg on the shores of the Firth of Forth established there in 1908 with commendable standards of sanitation and hygiene for its customers to equal those offered to the staff at Glenkinchie as reported in 1911! 31 THE GLENKINCHIE STORY
