Talented winemaker Simon Nunns has a well-honed sense of humour. Nothing funny here though – this is seriously superb. No surprise, really, that it took gold at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Everything you’d look for in a Riesling: green apple, Myer lemon, a hint of white fl owers, all dusted with a delicate chalky nuance. The palate fl ows beautifully, with just the right amount of acidity to hold the succulent fruit together. Coopers Creek always did (and still do) have the know-how to produce a classicly elegant Riesling with the ability to age gracefully.

Although not quite up to the halcyon heights of the last one, it has been quite a decent summer so far, an ideal time to get out with the family and enjoy a barbeque or two. A month or so more of this fi ne weather to go, I’m hoping, so bring it on!

Our March wineletter is packed with loads of interesting stuff. Our featured Titanic Trio – Marlborough’s Isabel Vineyard, Jackson Estate and Lake Chalice – can all point to longstanding reputations for pioneering excellence within our primary wine producing region.

Just in time for St Patrick’s Day we usher in a brand-new Irish cider and an Irish whisky. It’s also time for the always-anticipated Penfolds Bin release, and they have, this year, something new to talk about. You’ll fi nd inside, too, Waipara Hills’ latest Equinox releases, plus our splendid collection from Burgundy; and by the way, I recently purchased a very special barrel of Tennessee whiskey while in the States!

And so we arrive at an introduction to our function spaces and catering services: The Dida’s Jervois Rd team have ramped up the catering recently, and for those in the know, we have a fantastic catering menu that includes everything from cheese platters to antipasto selections to crafted canapés, all available for your next dinner party at home, in the offi ce, on the boat or wherever. The Dida’s team also provide the catering for a selection of function spaces at Glengarry Victoria Park; whether your event is for 10 or for 200, we have a space to suit. Check out our website and the video on it for more details.

Nothing short of a Central Otago fruit bowl, this is highly seductive and wonderfully affordable; Akarua’s drink-now model is extremely user-friendly, notes of cherry, violet and rosewater wafting in its wake as it travels the Silk Road with its bundle of spice. When you’re looking for a price-friendly Pinot to quaff that ticks all the boxes, you really can’t go past this.

When you can get a wine like this, hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and with a barrel matura-tion component, all for less than a round at the Viaduct, you have to love the whole second-tier concept, dontcha? Slightly fl oral, ripe and rich with a creamy butteriness normally reserved for those with ‘reserve’ on the label, this is a superb introduction to the genius that is Craggy Range.

Australian winemaker Tim Adams created the Mr Mick range in tribute to his vinous mentor and Clare Valley pioneer, K. H. ‘Mr Mick’ Knappstein. PENFOLDSCELEBRATING 170 YEARS OF HISTORY

March heralds the release of Penfolds’ iconic Bin range. This year they also celebrate 170 years since Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold planted the fi rst vines at Magill. Today, Penfolds are lauded the world over for the quality and consistency of their wines. Former Chief Winemaker Max Schubert pioneered the innovative concept of multi-regional blending to create the legendary Grange, arguably Australia’s greatest red. This process gave birth to the Bin Series; a multi-regional and skilfully blended range using the best fruit from the fi nest vineyards to maintain a consistent, high-quality ‘house style’ for each category. The Penfolds Bin portfolio includes some of Australia’s most celebrated and highly sought-after wines.

CLOUDY BAYSPARKLING MARLBOROUGH PRODUCERS

It doesn’t get much more Marlborough than Cloudy Bay; with their wines adored the world over, these guys are still running hot, and they carve out a path of excellence that continues to set the benchmark. Cloudy’s sparkling tiara is the mighty Pelorus, which throws down its own gauntlet for quality and consistency. The rosé is a welcome addition, and the 2009 vintage lives up to expectations.

CLOUDY BAY12122 PELORUS NV

$29.99 One of our fi nest sparkling wines, and it has been consistently so for two decades, give or take. Glittering gold in the glass, dusted with fl orals, the refreshing fruit echoes with toasty touches as it reclines upon a divan of creamy, heady richness.

12121 PELORUS ROSÉ NV

$32.99 Like its stable-mates, this is a beautifully crafted wine. The nose displays spice-edged aromas of soft summer fruits, with a hint of toast in the background. A versatile, silky-smooth sparkling rosé that fi nishes on a fresh, elegant note.

12125 PELORUS VINTAGE 2009

$36.99 Can it get any better? It certainly can. The last vintage that graced our shelves was the 2007 (the 2008 was magnifi cent but scarce, so it didn’t hang around). Despite an initial delicate approach, this is broad and rich and skilfully crafted. Mightily complex and superbly textural, it boasts impressive length.

This vino successfully stands its ground against Pinots that sell for a great deal more. In the glass it’s soft and supple, with savoury mushroom notes sprinkled over rich, ripe fruit. That richness is neatly balanced by the natural acidity and a mellow earthiness. Drinking very well right now.

Hand Harvested, barrel fermented on indigenous yeasts, put through partial malolactic and aged for ten months in seasoned French oak. Cousin to the mercurial Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, also requires careful management in the vineyard, a concept the fastidious Isabels are more than at home with. MAR

One of Marlborough’s largest family-owned wineries, the Isabel Vine-yard was established by Michael and Robyn Tiller in 1982. The Tillers initially operated as contract growers supplying the likes of Cloudy Bay, but their inevitable progression into winemaking met with sensational results, their very fi rst release, a Pinot Noir, taking out a gold medal.

Today, Isabel is very much a family affair, with Michael and Robyn’s four children and son-in-law, winemaker Carlos Orgiles Ortega, all actively involved. With the vineyards managed on sustainable and organic principles, the Isabel wines are 100% estate grown and made with fastidious attention to detail, right down to the inhouse bottling.

The same philosophy is applied to their second-tier wines, which reside under the Dr Renwick label and are produced off younger vines. The winery’s entire range is crafted with extreme care, with all the wines tipping their hats in a terroir salute to their Marlborough origins.

ISABEL VINEYARD

This lively wine jumps in with a bright-eyed burst of fragrant gooseberry and passionfruit under-scored by herbaceous notes and a dash of citrus. Ripe, concentrated, the vibrant and juicy palate is underscored by a refreshing tang of minerality and a crisp, racy fi nish. Great drinking.

JACKSON ESTATE GREY GHOST MARLBOROUGH

BARRIQUE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2011

For more than three decades, the pioneering Jackson Estate has been recognised as one of Marlborough’s premium producers of both quality fruit and exceptional fi ne wines. The enterprise is a testament to the vision and determination of the Stichbury and Jackson families who have farmed the land in the Wairau River plains at Jacksons Road for more than 160 years. The giant gum tree, Grey Ghost, that graces the Jackson Estate labels was planted in 1867 by John Jackson’s great-grandmother, Alice.

The vineyards are meticulously managed via a sustainable, low-cropping regime to provide both optimum fruit and varietal integrity, augmented at the other end of the business by the installation in 2003 of a new high-tech winery that ensures control over all aspects of the winemaking process. Head Winemaker Matt Patterson-Green has guided the winemaking team for almost a decade now. He explains: ‘Our philosophy is to produce wines that truly refl ect the variety and the land that gave them birth.’

Evocative of its own vineyard and the southern Marlborough clays, the Widow is replete with riches. What can we say about Chris Gambitisis? One of NZ wine’s true characters, Gambo looms larger than life, and we reckon his favourite interests outside of wine are Music, Motorbikes and Talking, and not necessarily in that order. This gregarious former restaurateur and his ex-police detective windsurfi ng mate Phil Binnie have come a long way. Gambo: ‘Phil and I enjoyed drinking and exploring wine styles, but what we really wanted to do was make wine, so we decided to buy a vineyard.’

Aided by the talented Matt Thomson, Gambo and Phil went and transformed their initial 11.5 hectare investment, the Falcon Vineyard, into a sprawling enterprise involving a number of vineyard sites and boasting a legion of fans the world over. Gambo: ‘Our philosophy is to make the best possible wine, so our vineyards are sustainably managed and we adopt a minimalist winemaking approach to let the purity of the fruit shine through.’

An enduring fan of Jack Daniel’s, I have long harboured the desire to select

my very own barrel of this iconic brand. Last year, this dream was realised when

I travelled to Lynchberg, Tennessee to do just that. And that barrel – sourced from

the very top racks where the whiskey barrels are subjected to greater extremes

of temperature and accelerated ageing – has now been bottled and delivered.

Just one in every hundred barrels is selected for a customer to choose from.

Some careful tasting eventually unveiled the barrel I knew was to be mine;

I was after something big and bold enough to accompany a cigar, yet still displaying

a lingering richness and subtlety of flavour. I found it in barrel #13-6464,

the vanilla and caramel flavours building into a vibrant, complex, more sumptuous

palate from additional time in the barrel, with a delightfully creamy mouthfeel

enveloping the honeyed notes and long, sweet finish.

But hey, don’t take my word for it! Try it for yourself: I invite you to come and enjoy

the Jack Daniel’s family of whiskeys with me and allow me to introduce you to my

Stephen and Hayley Plowman named their brand in tribute to the Bavarian Hallertau region famed for its hops, but at that point, proudly bearing their Riverhead roots and a well-honed sense of humour, they veer off into exuberant Westie mode via their fearlessly unique, smartly-executed brews.

Staunch believers in purity of expression, the beer styles are about generous aromas, vibrant fl avours and enriching characters, meticulously hand-brewed from the purest natural ingredients, with all of the Hallertau models lovingly championed regardless of their commercial viability.

Here, we feature the famed First Four (sounds presidential), which began life as humble numbers; but fear not, those of you who suck at maths, they’ve named them too. You’ll fi nd the Kepplers Cider Company in the historic township of Midleton (home to the largest pot-still in the world) in Ireland’s County Cork. It’s a relatively young wee thing, having emerged into the world as recently as 2009, but the quality of Kepplers’ output has established them as one of Ireland’s premium cider producers. No apple juice concentrate here, folks, it’s all locally sourced, freshly crushed apples, an approach that provides that extra kick to accompany the singular fl avours.

A bright cider boasting a gentle effervescence and a fragrant bouquet of cinnamon-laced apple and smoky nuances. It’s a clean and balanced expression, the crisp, spicy fl avours brought home nicely by a refreshing aftertaste.

100% family owned and operated from Dublin by brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling, the Teeling Whiskey Co. are well-known for doing things a little differently, and their hand-crafted, small batch Irish whiskeys embody this entrepreneurial spirit, with no chill fi ltering or added colouring. Designed to be a bridge between standard blended whiskeys and the rarifi ed world of single malts, the Teeling philosophy is to create premium quality blends with unique fl avour profi les.

Rich, golden, with vanilla and spice circling the bright, ambrosial notes of rum courtesy of the cask it was matured in. The infl uence of the rum cask and higher alcohol (46%) creates a smooth, sweetly mellow, gently wooded marriage that sparkles on the tongue. Heartwarming.

The Marzotto family, currently led by Count Paolo Marzotto, have long pursued a passion to create premium brands encompassing the worlds of textiles, fashion, decor and wine. Their Santa Margherita brand is best known as a pioneer of Italian Pinot Grigio, now the most imported wine in the US, with their own expression its biggest-seller in the American market.

Santa Margherita also specialize in Prosecco, Italy’s light and aromatic, low-alcohol sparkling wine – often drunk as an aperitif – that has become increasingly popular globally in the last few decades. A carefully-judged blend of 75% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Nero and 10% Pinot Bianco, Ca’ del Bosco’s prestige cuvée is reminiscent of a blanc de blancs champagne. The fi nish is dry, the wine incredibly smart.

CHÂTEAU

ROUTAS

Château Routas is a spectacularly picturesque estate in the heart of Provence, lodged midway between the French Riviera and the foot-hills of the Alps. Overlooking miles of wooded hillsides and rivers, it is surrounded by tiny medieval villages hugging steep cliffs.

The soil can vary dramatically, resulting in small, randomly-shaped vineyards, some as red as crushed brick, others home to crumbling grey limestone mixed with bright red stones that bleach in the hot summer sun. At 1,300 feet above sea level, the elevation is among the appellation’s highest, providing cool nights that slow the ripening of the grapes and contribute to the complexity of the wines.

Farmed sustainably, the estate has 135 of its 642 acres under vine. Routas has always had a strong reputation for its Provence rosé, now complemented by a range of excellent red and white wines.

PERELADA

Castillo Perelada, one of the grandest landmarks of the Empordà region, has had an association with the production of wine for a very long time. The Perelada castle houses Spain’s largest privately-held library, within which parchments detail winemaking practices that date back to the Middle Ages. Perelada’s modern renaissance began in 1923, when Miguel Mateu purchased the property and revitalised its wine production. His legacy lives on today under the stewardship of grandson Javier Suqué.

This is one of Spain’s most signifi cant producers, the wines a scintillating blend of centuries’ worth of knowledge and cutting-edge modernism. They have, indeed, almost become standard issue at royal and government functions, such is their consistent quality and the esteem in which they are held.
