Writers of the Week Our final Writers of the Week winners for 2019. A huge thank you to all of the students that have submitted work for consideration over the year. Mrs McCurry has greatly enjoyed selecting winners this term and presenting at assembly.

Under The Sea

There was a shark, who was trying to eat the fish. The shark has the sharpest teeth in the whole wide world. The crab snipped the angry shark, he was disappointed he could not have his dinner. The starfish laughed at the shark, the shark got angry. The crabs snipped him again, the shark was never seen again. They lived happily ever after. The end.

Golf Holidays As I hit the ball off the tee it felt like I hit it so hard as it was going down the fairway. I felt so anxious and nervous because I didn’t know where it was going to go. The next hole I hit it onto the green first hit. Joke time! Q: What is the difference between a golfer and a fisherman? A: When a golfer lies he doesn’t have to bring anything home to prove it. “Is this sudden interest in golf just saying you want to be like your old man?” “No dad, it’s just me saying I want to meet people” OK, back to the story. I was there for a comp and it was windy and rainy. When it was windy and rainy I was thinking to myself OMG this is a bad day for golf! As I pull out my driver, I feel the sweat on my hand. I looked down at the water droplets dripping down my jacket. After all of those nine holes we had presentation and I thought I could have done better. I can’t wait until the comp on Sunday at the Royal Adelaide Golf Course.

Aussie Stars “You’re a cruel young man, but if I have no choice.” Those were the words of Boswell Carson. What has he done? What is he going to do? What will happen in this nail-biting performance? In the exhilarating play Aussie Stars, you will experience all the ups and downs of the lives of the 5 finalists. Unfair judging and haunting pasts. This musical is filled with fun, laughter, sabotage and revenge. Where there’s more drama off stage than on, and you never know what you might see or hear. Will there be blackmail? Will everything fall apart? Some people will do whatever it takes to win. Aussie Stars. Something for the whole family. A play performed and produced by Year 7 students. An exciting and entertaining play held in Glenelg Primary’s humble school hall. You will be blown away by the failed acts, judges and the 5 finalists of course. All this and more for only a gold coin donation! So come on down and have the experience of a lifetime.

Police Horses

In week 6, Friday, 22nd November 2019, Glenelg Primary School had very special visitors.

Two policemen (Fletcher’s Dad from Room 24 and his colleague) with their brilliant horses, Zeus and Chief, came to pay a visit to our school and talked about their jobs. They explained the students that policemen had ridden on horses for a long time. They even explained why police horses were grey. In World War II the soldiers needed horses which were black so that they could blend in with the background at night. Which left a lot of grey horses,

so the horses were handed over to the police. It is a tradition which is followed even now. They talked about how long the horses lived, how long they trained the horses, how long after the horses retire, how they catch criminals etc. The students of Glenelg Primary School enjoyed the visit a lot, and they also understand and appreciate the police and their horses’ jobs.

Staff vs Students Table Tennis competition

On Monday 18th of November we held the second ‘Staff v Students Table Tennis Tournament’. It was again an event full of excitement and highly competitive players. With the teachers winning the inaugural event, it was only fair to let the students win this time!! Actually, they thrashed the teachers!! It was a great lunch time for all involved. No doubt the students are looking forward to showing off their skills in the next tournament, while the teachers will need to start training hard!!

Performing Arts Showcase

Glenelg Primary held their inaugural 'Performing Arts Showcase' on 11th

November. It was an opportunity to showcase talented students in drama, dance and music. Students and parents enjoyed the opportunity to be in the Brighton Secondary School Concert Hall. Performances included the Senior Choir led by Ms Jo Brus, a year 3 'We Remember' dance choreographed by Ms Amalie Meaney, year 4s performing 'The Poison Cake' directed by Ms Tammy Robinson and many instrumental students including violin, clarinet, piano, guitar and even ukulele! The 260 audience members gave very positive feedback about

the high standard of performing arts presented by our students.

Strings Concert

On Monday 2nd December the students who learn a string instrument at the school performed for family and friends. They did a fantastic job and we thank Sandy for all of her wonderful work teaching the children.

Volunteer Morning Tea

On Tuesday 26th November we hosted a morning tea for all of our fabulous volunteers. It was great to recognise the value of our volunteers and what they bring to our school community. Allan Richards was recognised as our Volunteer of the Year for his outstanding work over many years. The school needs volunteers to help in all types of ways; volunteers

offer so much and create so many additional experiences for the students. If you would like to become a volunteer in 2020 please see Trea in the front office.

Polling letters – Materials and Services charge Thank you to all that recently returned the voting slip for the 2020 M&S poll. The vote came back overwhelming supporting the 2020 M&S of $360 per child being legally recoverable. Of the 116 respondents, 78% were in favour (91 for, 25 against). From 2020 onwards, the cost of an incursion in wellbeing, supporting our school program and wellbeing in the school community, is being covered.

OSHC News

In 2019, Happy Haven OSHC Glenelg will be starting a Giving Tree! Christmas is a time for celebrating, but for many families in need it is challenging, lonely and isolating. Over the next few weeks at OSHC, we will be discussing this with the children at OSHC and asking them to create Christmas gift cards to make our gifts extra special. This year we will be donating all gifts received to the Salvation Army which will give hope to many families in need. We are that the Glenelg Primary School community come together to support our wider community in donating any gifts they
