It is our goal to record the positive contributions GLBT people make to their community and the localcommunity at large. While AIDS and Hate CRIMES are certainly not positive things, we seek to draw thepositive from the negative. We hold up Paul Delph and Matthew Shepard and their families as models ofhow human beings should or could react to each other and how families should support loved ones whoselives are not in the box right wing religious zealots want them in. Delph, a multi-talented Cincinnatian, diedof AIDS in 1996. His mother shut down her business to care for him. Shepard died in 1998, victim of a hateCrime and his mother worked for years to get passed a national Hate Crimes Bill, which is now law.

IRS even pays interest.However, you onlyhave three years fromthe date the tax isconsidered paid (April17th, 2012) to file arefund claim for 2011,so don’t procrastinate

short-term informalextension. If you needmore time, you canenter into an install-ment payment agree-ment by phone, online,or with the assistanceof a professional. With the new “FreshStart” initiative, IRSmay even waive somepenalties if you’reunemployed. But theworst thing you can dois ignore them. If you have multipleunfiled years and fearthat you owe a lot oftax – or know that youdo – it won’t go away.The balance will growwith penalties andinterest, and collectionwill get more aggres-sive. Call IRS and askfor transcripts, orcontact a professional.You have severalpaths available tosleeping better.Choose one. As with any com-plex tax area, do yourresearch (see theinstructions to Form4868 and/or 7004,

and IRS publicationsregarding penalties)or consult a compe-tent, experienced,licensed tax profes-sional. Someof us don’t receivecritical informationuntil the last minuteand can’t get it done.IRS has a form forthat! The 4868 grantsan extension to Octo-ber 15th to file a 1040,which would be duethis year by April17th. If you have apartnership or Sub-chapter S corporation,you file a Form 7004to get an extension toSeptember 15th. Notethat the SubS returnwas due March 15th,though. What are the penal-ties if you extend, or ifyou don’t? What ifyou don’t have themoney to pay? First, if you have arefund coming, therewill be no penalty.

too long,or you’lllose it! If you’regoing toowe tax,

you must pay theexpected balance due(or at least 90 percentof the total tax) by thedue date to avoidpenalties. Failure topay and failure to filepenalties are steep;they each run up to 25percent of the tax due– and don’t forget theinterest. Because of the pen-alties, it’s better to filethe tax return on time– even if you don’thave the money to pay.IRS will send a noticein a few weeks. My momis not around to watchme walk down thestairs in my gown togreet the nervousgentleman, my dad toask him awkwardquestions, ensuringmy virginal safety. I’llride there on a bicycle,loaded no doubt witht-shirts, swedish fishand grenadine. He’llarrive an hour tooearly on his motor-cycle, a bowtie thepride of his meticu-lous ensemble, a largeand precarious featherin his hat. We’ll meetfurtively on the stairsbetween arrangingchairs and taking pic-tures, perhaps even onthe dancefloor, sneak-ing moments togetherbetween industriousmerry-making. Icouldn’t imagine abetter date.

By Karen Allen Back in ‘97 when I was struggling witha Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis, I discov-ered Psalm 139. That’s where David wrote

that I would whine andshout bad words at thesky. But God also knewI would come to accept

homophobic churchthree years later when Iwould finally have toadmit to myself that Iwas Gay. Now, God has a senseof humor but this wasn’tsome sick joke or even atest to see if I couldcontinue to “play itstraight” in an effort toplease him. God knewthe exact moment Iwould start questioningwhat I’d been taught, theexact moment I woulddig into the Bible formyself to find out whatGod really said and theexact moment I wouldrealize that with his helpI was more than strongenough to get through alife that would be differ-ent and harder than most. You’ve been told thatGod hates you, thatyou’re an abomination.Please understand thatanyone who would saysuch things doesn’tknow God and they arecertainly not a Christian.

God sent his Son becausehe loves everyone, notjust some. Christians arecalled to share God’slove and mercy, not passjudgment on those whoare different. Goddoesn’t hate you; on thecontrary, God has plansfor you!God loves you and that’ssomething no one cantake away from youunless you let them.Don’t let them. Instead,know that we’ve beencreated strong and toughto handle a life that isdifferent and challeng-ing because God hasgroomed us to do some-thing so many Christiansdon’t do: Question whatis wrong, and then fightfor what is right.

Where your strength and courage come from

God knew all theamazing things David would do in his Allenlifetime as well as all the major screw-upshe would make. God knew every thoughtDavid had and every word he would speakbefore it even crossed his lips. And Davidknew that God loved him anyway. How coolis that? That Psalm made me realize that Godknew before I was born that I would haveMS. God knew that I would feel cheated;

and deal with mychallenges; in fact,God knew the exactmoment I wouldrealize that withGod’s help I wasmore than strong
