It is our goal to record the positive contributions GLBT people make to their community and the localcommunity at large. While AIDS and Hate CRIMES are certainly not positive things, we seek to draw thepositive from the negative. We hold up Paul Delph and Matthew Shepard and their families as models of howhuman beings should or could react to each other and how families should support loved ones whose livesare not in the box right wing religious zealots want them in. Delph, a multi-talented Cincinnatian, died of AIDSin 1996. His mother shut down her business to care for him. Shepard died in 1998, victim of a hate Crime andhis mother worked for years to get passed a national Hate Crimes Bill, which is now law.

PRIDE—PRIDE—PRIDE—PRIDEBy Worley Rodehaver

Yes, there are four PRIDEs in theheadline because we have fourPRIDE events in Greater Cincinnatithis year. Two of the PRIDE events havealready taken place and two arecoming up. On September 10th the Gay andLesbian Community Center is hostingits 14th annual PRIDE Night at KingsIsland, an event chaired by RustyLockett. Then, on October 3rd, a NorthernKentucky group will host its first Partyin the Park, (our front page story) ledby Patti Herrmann, who headedefforts to hold Greater Cincinnati’sfirst PRIDE Parade and Festival. In early August, Cincinnati’s PRIDEFestival was held downtown, afterhaving been in Northside for nineyears. It was hosted by the GayChamber of Commerce. In mid-August, Dan Wells, a North-side resident, led efforts to hold a day-long PRIDE event in Northside. The downtown event featured a

parade and a festival on FountainSquare followed by a banquet anddance. In Northside there were fourmain venues (inside on a hot Augustday) and featured a style show andentertainment. Entertainment and rides will befeatured at the Kings island event. In Kentucky there will be speakers, games and entertainment as well asbooths providing information aboutcommunity organizations. Competition? Too much PRIDE?Not really. Somebody said we shouldbe PROUD every day. Well, most ofus are but these events give us fourtimes to show Greater Cincinnati wereally do have PRIDE! There is nothing wrong with that!

Mother SaysBy Michael Chanak

Once upon a time there was asounder of pigs who lived in a sty. Itwasn’t the smallest of sties or the

Suffer the pig

largest of sties. It was amedium sized sty, althoughsome claimed it far larger. I am one of the pigswho lives in this sty. These pigs are fairlysmart but like all pigs we fight forscraps of food. Some of my pigsisters and brothers had loudersqueals, and some had longer tails butall were most certainly pigs. Pigs, it seems live to eat. We will doanything to broker attention whenfresh swill is slopped into the trough. So, it is in the pig world. All us pigs

wanted to be first to the feedingtrough. One pig just before mealtime, felt itwas ignored because its curly tail wassomehow different than the other pigs.

This pig doesn’t under-stand the difference, after all a tail is on thefar end of a pig. Butonce the squealingstarted about the food

distribution every pig heard about itthroughout the medium sized sty. Then, one pig decided it was timefor the entire sty to move elsewhere, which seemed to this intelligent sow awise decision. But, of course, somepigs found change distressing and theytoo began to scream so that everyother pig in the land heard the greatcommotion. Another sow sister decided thatmaybe two or three sties might donicely and began to grunt and snortthroughout the sty. Since all pigs canfly, one flew over the river, andanother landed on the fountain, andone just didn’t want to try her wings. But, then another sister pig could notreckon how the multiple sties would besupplied. There may not be enoughswill to split among the sties. Howwould all hear the cry of “sooey” atmealtime? Whatever is a pig to do? While all the pigs were stirred upwith the various dramas of the farm-yard, a wolf waited and watched forthe precise moment, and no one gotfed, but the wolf.

Lexington, KY — Kentucky EqualityFederation has expressed outragetoward the Cabinet for Health andFamily Services for discriminatingagainst a Gay male attempting toremove his sister’s children fromfoster care. Jeffrey Thompson of Louisville,Kentucky was visited by a socialworker who assumed he was Gay.According to Thompson, the socialworker never actually asked him. The most disturbing item on thereport is the social worker stating:“The relationship and roles of theadults (Thompson and his partner)are fraught with the possibility of long-term illness/disability and domesticviolence.” “This is absolutely outrageous,”stated Kentucky Equality FederationFounder and Public Advocate JordanPalmer. “The Cabinet is apparentlyassuming the couple will contractHIV/AIDS. This is a clear bias againstthe LGBTI community. The Cabinet

also pointed out that one of the adultsnot being a relative was also a causefor concern (Thompson’s partner)....well, in foster placement, theyare surrounded by strangers. I thinkthe Gay and Lesbian community herein Kentucky is getting pretty sick ofbeing discriminated against because ofhomophobia.” Palmer also added that the Ken-tucky Supreme Court has ruled onsame-sex second parent adoption, soThompson’s partner should not be afactor. Thompson and his partner have beentogether since April 29, 2008,” addedChairman Richard Jones.” Also,Thompson reports that neither he norhis partner have any health problems, and have never fought. Jones said, The actions of theCabinet are a direct result of biasagainst our community. I cannotbelieve the Commonwealth wouldrather have these children in fostercare instead of their Uncle Jeffrey. The ‘Overall Assessment’ stated in thereport is completely unacceptable, and

For four days in Augjust, CovenantPresbyterian Church on the outskirtsof Napa, California was turned into acourtroom. The Rev. Jane Spahr, 68, was ontrial, accused of failing to “further thepeace, unity and purity of the church”by marrying 16 Gay and Lesbiancouples in 2008 when same-sexmarriage was legal in California. Her judges were six mostly white-haired Presbyterian elders, who sat at

a table beneath a cross, listeningintently to the proceedings. On the fimnal day James Jones, themoderator of the judicial commission, stood and declared Spahr guilty ofmost of the charges. “We determinethat you are hereby censured byrebuke,” Jones said. “You are en-joined to avoid such offenses in thefuture.” Spahr, who has short gray hair anddeep blue eyes, slumped in her chair. Her supporters, including several ofthe couples she had married, brokedown. During the church trial, Bibles werethumbed, the Presbyterian Book ofOrder was often consulted andinterpretations clashed. The prosecutor, JoAn Blackstone, aformer lawyer with a white braidencircling her head, argued that Spahrhad defied the Book of Order, whichdefines marriage as “civil contractbetween a woman and a man.”Blackstone said that more study, notecclesiastical disobedience,” was theright path. “Our church is simply notready at this time to make changeabout the way it defines marriage,”Blackstone said in her closing argu-ment. A member of the panel, the Rev. TedCrouch, suggested that might take toolong. “Presbyterians love to formcommittees and study things,” he said, and the audience laughed.

I thinkthe cabinet believes that homosexualswill contract a disease or have domes-tic violence in their lives, which has ledthem to say there is “concern” anddeny placement.” Thompson continued: “I woulddescribe the demeanor of the socialworker to be very assuming; he willdraw his own conclusions withoutseeing or hearing the facts.
