The apprenticeship system was first established and maintained in the City in medieval times by the 14 historic Craft Guilds, which united to form the Trades House of Glasgow in 1605. The goal then was to ensure high quality workmanship and customer service.

Running since 2006, the Trades House of Glasgow Modern Apprentice Awards showcases the commitment and capability of candidates who have chosen this route to further their careers.

The Awards will be held during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, the national campaign run by Skills Development Scotland to celebrate the benefits apprenticeships bring to employers, individuals and the economy.

Introduction 2014 Awards

I am extremely excited to be involved with the Glasgow Modern Apprentice Awards for the first time. After attending the Ceremony in 2014, I came to realise just how important this project is to the City and young people in Glasgow. We are delighted to be working closely with Skills Development Scotland this year and our 2015 Awards Ceremony will take place during ‘Scottish Apprenticeship Week’.

We are confident that this will be the most successful year to date and hope that a record number of apprentices throughout the Greater Glasgow Region will get involved.

Late Deacon Ken Dalgleish, Awards Co-ordinator

I extend my best wishes to everyone who has embarked on a Modern Apprenticeship with a view to developing their career.

In particular I hope that entering this competition will be a useful experience in career development for all our entrants, and that each and every one will, in the years ahead, look back on their

years of training, knowing that it set them on a path for life.

Bishop Idris JonesDeacon Convener of the Trades of Glasgow

The 2015 winner will be chosen from one of six finalists and presented with an inscribed trophy, which will remain on display in the Trades Hall, home to the Trades House of Glasgow. They will also receive an inscribed replica of the trophy and a cash prize of £500 for study. A second prize of £300 and a third of £200 will also be awarded. The remaining three finalists will each receive a certificate of commendation.

The Award is open to anyone working towards a Scottish Modern Apprenticeship in the Greater Glasgow Region or those certificated no earlier than May 2014. The closing date for entries is 26 March 2015 and an Award Ceremony will be held in the Trades Hall of Glasgow on the evening of Thursday 21 May 2015.

2014 Awards

The 2014 Awards Ceremony was a great success. All six finalists attended a presentation within The Trades Hall of Glasgow on Tuesday 8 April along with their training providers, family and friends.

BAE Systems employee, Stephen Deigman, was over the moon when he was announced overall winner, collecting a beautiful quaich engraved with the Trades House logo, a framed certificate and cash prize.

My apprentice manager first made me aware that the Trade House of Glasgow organised a Modern Apprentice competition and encouragement from my work colleagues and fellow apprentices convinced me to enter.

I was delighted to win an award with the prestige of the Trades House of Glasgow Modern Apprentice of the Year. It is great to receive recognition for your hard work and commitment.

James McGhee of ClydeUnion Pumps and Finulla McCloskey of Glasgow City Council Land & Environmental Services took away cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd place and all finalists received a framed certificate for their achievements.

Members of the 2014 Technical Panel, Maria Roushias and Linda McTavish were thrilled to play such a huge part in the Awards and Maria has agreed to stay on the panel for 2015. Joining her will be Late Collector Ruth Maltman, Bryan Buchan of Scottish Engineering and the Awards Co-ordinator Late Deacon Ken Dalgleish.

I thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony at Trades Hall and was interested to learn more about the history of the Trades House and the important charity work that the organisation is involved with today.

Winning the competition has provided me with additional motivation to continue to develop myself and become a well-rounded, competent engineer.
