Our Lives Together for October 2016
GLADE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
GLADE TIDINGS
Glade UCC STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN
As you may have already heard, we are organizing a stewardship
campaign this fall. The theme is “Go and Do the Same,” which
is based on the story of the Good Samaritan. We are encouraged
to share what we have – whether it is time, talent, money, or even
things less tangible such as our enthusiasm, tolerance, and love,
for example.
We will begin a four-Sunday campaign beginning October 23,
2016, and will conclude with a “Commitment Sunday” on
November 13th. The Commitment Sunday will include a
catered lunch. A RSVP card will be sent to you in the mail in the
near future in order for us to know the amount of food we need to
order. Mark your calendars!
Watch the Sunday bulletins and your mail for more details – and
of course, we will be talking about this in church as the campaign
nears and begins, as well. We look forward to getting this
process underway! If you have any questions, please contact any
of the Finance & Stewardship Committee members. The com-
mittee members are: Adriane Wodey, Brooks Widder, Connie
Rough, Bonnie Ogg, Adam Frederick and Shannon Jordre.

Ponder with the Pastor
A Season of Taking Stock…
John Wesley wrote, “W hen the Possessor of heaven and
earth brought you into being and placed you in this world, He
placed you here not as an owner but as a steward—as such He
entrusted you for a season with goods of various kinds—but
the sole property of these still rests in Him, and cannot be
alienated from Him. As you are not your own but His, such is
likewise all you enjoy.” Wesley, no doubt, based those
words, at least in part, on Paul’s first letter to Timothy: “…for
we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing
out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content
with these” (1 Timothy 6:7-8).
Humanity, from the beginning, has been concerned with
“having enough.” But, in our own time, what exactly does
that mean? A “seventy-something” Illinois farm woman, who
is a friend of ours, once answered that question by
saying, “I had one lone dress that hung in my closet for
Sunday worship.” Spartan, to be sure, but it was “enough.” I
try to remember her words when I go to the closet, see a bunch
of clothes hanging there, and mumble, “I don’t have anything
to wear.” Most of us have more than “enough.”
Here at Glade United Church of Christ, we will soon begin a
stewardship campaign. Our theme this year is “Go and Do the
Same.” Though our congregation has been in existence since
1750, it has had a couple of different edifices in which it has
worshipped. And, throughout its history, it has experienced an
evolution in its identity; originally a German Reformed
congregation, it was one of several denominations that merged
in 1957 to form the United Church of Christ. If, by chance,
3
you are interested in reading more about the German Reformed
history of the UCC, you might find this link helpful: http://
www.ucc.org/about-us_short-course_the-german-reformed-
church. There have been quite a few faithful stewards who
have gone before us, and we pray that we might be such
witnesses to one another, and those who come behind us.
As we take stock in this special season of stewardship, we
recall all of the many moments and opportunities when Glade
Church has been the “good news” and shared the “good news”
with Walkersville, Frederick County, and the world. It is also
an occasion to remember all of the saints who have helped
make us who we are today. As we recount the congregation’s
many years, we recall the countless Sunday school teachers
who have taught the faith. Our souls are still stirred by the
thousands of anthems that have been sung. We gratefully re-
member every faithful pastor who has sought to lead through
both good and difficult times, and many believers who have
“prayed without ceasing.” From the middle of the eighteenth
century to today, Glade has been a place where strangers have
become friends, friends have become disciples, and disciples
have made up the body of Christ.
Today, like never before, the world needs to clearly see the
body of Christ in all of its wonderful fullness. Please
prayerfully consider growth in your giving in this time so that
God may be glorified, and a different pastor, a hundred years
from now, will be able to recount our shared commitment.
I hope to see you this Sunday at the “giving place.”
Blessings,
Pastor Phil

Hanging of the Greens Brunch
Please plan to join us directly after worship on November
27th for our Hanging of the Greens brunch. Egg
casserole dishes will be provided; kindly bring a dish to
share. Can’t think of a dish to bring...donuts, sticky buns,
fruit, Jell-O salad, potato items all seem to be big hits.
There will be a sign up sheet in the back of the church so we
can get an idea of the number of egg casseroles we need.
Have lunch, enjoy some fellowship, then hit the Mall to start
your Christmas shopping!

Minutes of the August 15, 2016, Consistory Meeting
The Pastor’s Report, and the Treasurer & Improvement Fund
Reports were presented and approved.
Church & Ministry—The membership data call was
reviewed and minor corrections were proposed. The data call
letter will be revised and sent to the members.
Finance & Stewardship Committee—The UCF Investment
Funds are having good success. Shannon Jordre is working on
the stewardship campaign and its goals. The church insurance
company had an inspector to inspect the properties for any
risks and reports we are in good standing. We are to hear back
from the insurance board if there are any issues.
Property—Rental House—Tim Dinterman made repairs and
painted the side porch.
Worship and Fellowship—Preparations were reported under-
way for worship/picnic in the park. The cost of a
subscription to www.workofthepeople.com (video materials
for use in worship and education) will be shared evenly be-
tween the Worship and the Education subaccounts.
Christian Education—Bonnie Ogg will chair the Christian
Education Committee. Lisa Byrd has proposed to hold the
Christmas pageant on the stage in the social hall this year.
Marketing—Lorijean Turner has volunteered to update our
web presence and update the photos.
Other Discussions—It was proposed we phase out the use of
non-biodegradable or non-recyclables disposable food serving
items, e.g., styrofoam products. It was generally agreed this
was part of our responsibility as stewards of the earth.

Have you noticed the new Cemetery tab on our
website: www.gladechurch.org?
Joshua Miller, a local boy scout, approached the Glade
Cemetery Board about an idea for his community project for
his Eagle Scout badge. He asked about identifying where the
veterans are buried. Joshua recently completed the project.
The veterans are identified by the sections of the cemetery.
Click on the Glade Cemetery tab, and after clicking on their
name, the link will go to www.findagrave.com. A picture of
the headstone with be on the website. When reviewing the
website, if you see any discrepancies, please contact Dick
Gilbert. This is an ongoing task we will continue to maintain.

THANKS CONNIE! For the past five years or so, Connie Rough has provided steady service as the congregation’s secretary. But, really, she has done far more than what we may understand, or expect, from a secretary. So, while we celebrate that she wants to do other things in life, we will miss her presence in the office.
In Connie’s resignation letter to Adam Frederick (Consistory President), she writes, “I am resigning as the secretary of Glade UCC. With accepting the position as Lead of the Finance and Stewardship Committee, I did not realize the time involved in working through the tasks at hand with that committee and there is an urgency to get those task completed of which I have not had the time to work on. Fulfilling both the secretary position and the lead of a committee, it is more time than I had expected. With a great deal of thought, I feel, I can best serve Glade UCC by continuing as the lead of the Finance and Stewardship Committee and step down as the secretary of the church.”
Thank you, Connie, for your faithful service to Glade UCC!
Dear Guild & Glade Church May 27, 2016
Dear Friends,
I am humbled by your generosity, love and care and I am so
appreciative of the way you recognized my twenty-five years
of ordained Christian ministry. The monetary gift,
commemorative plague, and the wonderful lunch were true
blessings!

Phil

communities by providing affordable housing
opportunities and supportive services to improve the quality
of life and economic stability for seniors, working families

Care Giving Ministry
H a p p y F a l l, Y’ a l l !!!
As I write this article, it’s the first day of Autumn—-the beginning of a new season (one of my favorites as I find it hard to pick just one). I enjoy God’s use of ‘painting’ gold, crimson, red, and orange on the hillsides...the crunch of colorful leaves underfoot...the cool nip in the air...leaf peeping...crisp breezes...sipping apple cider...munching on spiced treats...toasting marshmallows over a flaming bonfire…
Poet William Bryant referred to Autumn as “the year’s last, loveliest smiles.” It is, from my perspective, one of the most beautiful times of the year. And with the arrival of the new season, we are given the perfect opportunity to not only see and enjoy its’ awesome beauty, but we also are given the opportunity to do something beautiful.
Why not try kindness?! The world sure could use some kindness! - - -some love in action!
My eyes were drawn to a single sentence in a young woman’s obituary recently published in the FNP. It read:
“Please honor her dedication to serving others by performing an unexpected act of kindness for someone in need.”
How can you ‘color’ someone’s world by doing just that?! Blessings!

Fall Church Dinner
Fried Oysters Ham and Roast Turkey
November 4-5, 2016, Walkersville Fire Hall
We’re getting ready for the Glade Church’s largest fund
raiser—The Fall Dinner and Bazaar!
On Friday the 4th, dinners are served from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, the
5th, dinners are served from 12-5 p.m. All dinners are served
buffet style including lots of side dishes.
We need YOU to make the dinners a success! Donations of
crafts and baked goods (no cream fillings or buttercream
frostings) are needed for the craft and sweets table. We can use
seasonal decorated wreaths, knitted or sewn items, handcrafted
greeting cards, jewelry, or ornaments, for example. Baked goods
to sell will be labeled identifying allergens, such as milk, eggs,
shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybean, and fish. Rice
Krispy treats, popcorn, and chocolate covered pretzels are now
allowed. Fudge and caramel are considered to promote rapid
growth of bacteria and are not allowed. We also are in need of
9x13 cakes (no buttercream or cream cheese icings, please). Sign
up at church in October, or call Cathy Widder (301-898-
5558) or Ron Rough (301-639-3834) to volunteer. There is a
lot to organize. If you can sign-up early, it helps tremendously!
Food handlers are required to wear head coverings, such as hair-
nets or caps, and loves. No wrist jewelry is to be worn in the
kitchen or dining hall, and long hair must be worn up, or
tied back securely. Hands should be washed with soap before
working. Slaw makers & meat carvers are needed a few days
before the dinners. We set up the dining hall at the fire hall on
Thursday night. Lots of opportunities for all! Thanks in
advance! We appreciate your help with one of the very best
DINNERS in the area!

Mission and Social Action
New International Mission Project
The Catoctin Association has been looking for an international
mission project to substitute for Honduras since that effort was
concluded last year. It looks like they have found one. Here is a
brief summary:
Educational Assistance to Christian Syrian Refugee Children
in Lebanon—This educational assistance program will target the
education of young Christian Syrian refugees living in camps in
Lebanon. The on-the-round .effort is led by the Rev. Dr. Mary
Mikhael of the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Leba-
non (NESSL). NESSL is a Protestant denomination of Arabic
speaking congregations consisting of 38 churches, 4,000 mem-
bers and 20 pastors. NESSL is known in the Middle East and
throughout the world for their spiritual and service based work.
In response to the Syrian refugee crisis, called the worst such
crisis since WWII, NESSL has launched a series of programs
including providing basic supplies to refugees (food, clothing,
medicine, rent assistance, hygiene products) and a second pro-
gram to provide heat, gas and electricity and water so that homes
in Homs (a city devastated by the Syrian conflict) can be
restored.
Beginning last fall, NESSL began a new ministry to serve
school age children in Lebanese refugee camps. These children
can easily become a lost generation: they are begging in the
streets for food and easy prey for criminals or extremists seeking
recruits for various militias. Using former church buildings for
No Fall Dinner Guest Sponsorship—In light of our fall steward-
ship campaign, we will be deferring our guest sponsorships to
the spring dinner
17
the most part, NESSL has started 4
programs (2 in the Bekaa Valley, one in
the north and one in the south) serving
some 227 children.
The children are taught reading and
writing in Arabic and English,
arithmetic, science and ethics. They
are transported on buses and receive a meal. They are provided
with books and school supplies. There is a constant demand from
parents to expand the program. Kib Elias, one of the initial
schools that started with 50 children, is asking if they can grow to
sixty next year. As word gets out, demand is increasing for this
important mission.
Glade, through the MSA, will support this program. That will
involve a monetary contribution as well as other opportunities to
participate. We hope it will open our hearts much like the Hondu-
ras project did and link us with those in need in this
war-torn part of the world. We will continue to work with the
Catoctin Association to provide you with more information and
participation opportunities.
Glade UCC is walking “Out of the Darkness.” Our
church will be joining the effort to save lives and bring hope to
those affect by suicide. Becky Hommer will be leading the
team on October 8th. Contact her for more information.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is
dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected
by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental
health through education and community programs, develops
suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and pro-
vides support for those affected by suicide.
