Glacial Movement

Glacial MovementWe created glaciers and investigated how these massive pieces of ice have changed the earth!

What is a glacier?A glacier is a large, slow-moving mass of ice.

We created glaciers by freezing small cups of water, soil, and rocks.

We placed our glaciers in the freezer over night. During our next science class our investigation continued.

Check out the layers!

We used modeling clay to create land. The clay was flattened and place in a tray. We placed our glacier at one end of the clay.

We slowly slide the glacier over the land. We noticed a lot of changes occurred! We remembered that although our investigation only took 1 class period, glacial movement takes 100s if not 1000s of years! We collaborated with each other, discussing our own thoughts about glaciers. We recorded our predictions.

After moving the glacier, we talked about what happened to the clay. We observed sediments that were left behind and noticed the rivers and valleys that were scratched into the earths surface. We patiently watched what happened as the ice began to melt. We recorded our observations.

Check out this cool video of how the investigation worked!

Our glaciers created some magnificent land forms!

Notice the sediments that were eroded and deposited!

Glaciers are awesome!

We had fun working together!
