GK-plus8 • LND 7317 • Geiger Counter by Atomic.dave [email protected] This is a one of a kind, custom hand-made Geiger Counter built by Atomic.Dave. This is the GKplus8- a replacement to the popular full featured Cadillac Meter. It is based on a kit designed by John Giametti (username: Brohogan) I have been building his DIY Geiger counters for over four years having built and sold over 150 of them. Much of the information for this kit is available at the developer’s website. This is more of a kit for someone who knows a little bit about electronics but doesn’t have the time or patience to build it, or would rather someone else do all the dirty work. Having been built by me, of course there may be some imperfections, although as minimal as possible. This particular unit not only has a wireless remote control for in field programming, it also has the very sensitive American-made GM tube, the LND 7317. Also provided on the CD is the developer’s User guide and assembly instructions for further information on this unit, its operations and functions as well as other troubleshooting tips. OPERATION Four Triple Pole switches- ALL OFF IN CENTER POSITION. With 3 tactile momentary switches above them. The middle tactile (LOG) is used to send current Log Data instantly to the SD card writer. A. PWR controls the use and charging of the battery. Up for ON, Middle OFF, and Down to CHARGE. When the battery is charging, the RED LED on the lower right side next to the USB port will remain constant RED while charging, and when complete, will turn BLUE. You can also power the unit with USB, bypassing the batteries for extended periods. PWR to middle position, and USB switch up. This will bypass the battery while using any 5v source. PLEASE NOTE: When using the battery, always keep the USB power switch in the up position as. B. GPS POWER SWITCH - used to help reduce battery life. BE SURE TO POWER OFF UNIT BEFORE using this switch. This is located next to the power switch. C. SND switch controls the Event speaker. Up for Click mode, Middle for mute, Down for Tone Mode. More information on Tone Mode can be found on the User guide pdf on the cd. D. ALM controls the Alarm LED and Piezo. Up for both on, Middle for both off, and Down for LED only on. This makes for a silent visual alarm. To temporarily stop the alarm when it is sounding, hit the SEL button. E. SEL - momentary switch does 4 things. Everytime you start up your GC (geiger counter) it will show you this so you will always know your current voltage. Third line shows the current alarm threshold, and the blue boxed area says Set Alarm? at that point you can push the Select button to incrementally change the Alarm threshold number by pushing down the SEL button. Once you stop holding the button and wait, it will be set to the current number shown on the screen and will stay there until you change it either again restarting and waiting for this part, or by using the included remote control to change it. You can also choose from units of measurement such as CPM or uSv/h for the Alarm with the remote. It also acts like a stopwatch starter for the scaler mode. It has two preset times of 1 minute and 10 minute averaging. You can change the second one only with the remote, or the sketch when connected to pc. The 4000mAh 3.7v lipo battery is boosted to5v with a pololu booster. Everytime you start up your GC (geiger counter) it will show you this so you willalways know your current voltage.

time without a computer and with the remote. At the bottom of the window is todays’s date and time. Thesystem now has an internal clock with backup battery, although the date and time will not be current until theGPS gets a fix which takes only a few minutes. So if you leave off the unit for a day, the date and time will notupdate until the GPS fix.

This select button can also be used as a mute switch when an alarm point is reached, and the piezo isblaring, just hit this select button once and it will mute the alarm for 30 seconds. Finally, it also acts as aEPROM reset button. At startup, hold down the SEL button and current EPROM info will be reset to default.

F. NULL momentary switch and works only when in Tone mode for the event speaker. When you are scanningin Tone mode, you can push this to reset the sensing to zero as you approach a sample.

LEDSRight away, you will hear the clicking of the speaker as your GM tube picks up radiation events. There are twoLEDs below the LCD. The Left is GREEN which is for radiation events and coincides with the clicking speakerwhich can be muted with the sound switch in middle position. The Right one is RED for the Alarm which willonly light up when a set alarm threshold is reached. It can be turned on or off with the Alarm switch in middleposition. Once again when there is an alarm threshold reached, you can alway hit the select button to mutethe piezo (for 30 sec) and shut off the RED LED if you don’t want to move the sound switch to middle position.

OTHER SWITCHES, BUTTONS, PORTS, DIALS USB POWER SWITCH - This is used for controlling the use of the USB 5v power that is coming thru this portwhen plugged into a 5v source such as a wall charger, solar panel, cigarette adapter, laptop, or computer.When up (ON), USB plugged in, and the main power switch in the middle, this will power the unit and bypassthe batteries. When down, and power switch is down, this will charge the unit’s internal 4000mAh 3.7v lithiumion battery. Just to the left of the USB port is the charging LED indicator. RED for charging, and BLUE whencharging is complete. Protective overcharge circuitry is built into the included Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.

MINI USB PORT - (lower right side of unit) used to connect to pc of mac for sketch editing via arduinoprogramming. It can also be used for radiation data logging, using Radiation Logger:http://www.rhelectronics.net/store/radiation-logger.html

AUD PORT - (on the left side of unit) used for Geiger Bot (with the included G-Bot cable). Just plug in theGeiger Bot cable into this with the 3 conductor plug, and the 4 conductor into your iphone or ipad. It alsoserves as an audio output for silent listening with headphones, or with a 3 conductor to 3 conductor M-Maudio cable, you can run sound based data logging software.

SD CARD WRITER - This meter is equipped with an internal SD card writer. Always turn OFF the unit whileremoving or inserting the SD card. The default auto write of all info to the card is set to 1 minute, but youcan change that easily with the remote control. When inserting the SD card, place the meter back down on atable, make sure the metal tabs on the card are up, and are going into the slot of the meter. Do NOT force itand gently nudge it in making sure you are sliding it in a horizontal motion. It will stop when the card is about3mm coming out of the slot. Never force it, or push it further than the front plate. The file that is written to thecard is saved as a .csv file which is Microsoft Excel compatible.

LOG BUTTON - Located below the IR window and betweenthe SEL and NULL tactiles. Push this and all info currentlyhappening will be written to the SD card. Otherwise, the SDcard writer has a set time you can adjust to record at intervals-info such as Time, Date, Speed, altitude, GPS coordinates,CPM, uSv/hr. Entries made with the Log button end with ** todistinguish them from automatic entries. You can push thisbutton with or without the boot on basically making it a hiddenbutton.

As shown in the diagram to the right, the file is brokenout into columns: Date, Time, Lat, Lon, Alt(m), Vel(km/h),CPM, uSv/h, Vcc. By copying a column(s) of data, you canmake any type of bargraph or piechart that excel is capableof creating.

TFT DISPLAYThree choices for the colors used in thisscreen can be selected in the menu. Othermenu options also affect this screen suchas update period, dose unit, graph type,bargraph max, etc. See Menu Optionsbelow.

With the default 5 sec. refresh, thegraph area shows about 13 minutes ofactivity. It then starts again from the left withthe lead bar separating the two sections of the graph.

The status line shows the max CPM since power on, and will also show the speed and altitude if a GPSis used. It will also show a LOGGED lit if the Log button was pressed for a manual log entry. If the batteryvoltage is low it will also display on the status line. The responsive bargraph at the bottom of the screen isanother way of showing activity.

STATUS LEDs – The 3 small colored dots on top right of the display represent the following:

• LEFT - blinks twice with every serial log and once with every SD log• CENTER - Only comes on when Scaler Mode is active• RIGHT - comes on red when alarm is sounding – flashes white when MUTING with the remote• Pressing the Select button (or the key on the remote) while in this screen will switch to the Scaler screen . . .• Two scalers are provided, each with its own period. The top scaler is fixed at one minute and bottom scaler is setto a programmable time in the menu.• Each scaler has two modes - counting and ongoing. The screen on left shows both scalers counting. A runningtotal of the counts is displayed, and the amount of time left for the scaler period along with a bargraphrepresenting the time left.• The screen on the right shows that the one minute scaler finished the counting mode and is now showing theaverage CPM and dose rate for the period. These values now become a moving average.• The bottom scaler can also be set to Infinity in the menu. This is a special mode that shows the total accumulateddose since the scaler screen was first started.• Pressing the Select button while in the scaler screen will bring you back to the main screen. However both scalerswill still be accumulating counts, so you can go back and forth between the main screen and the scaler screen andstill see meaningful data.• Counts on the scaler screen can be reset by pressing the key on the remote while in the scaler screen. Countsare also reset when the unit is powered off.• Note the alarm will not sound while the scaler screen is being displayed.• Pressing the key on the remote will switch to an “information screen” which will display the current date andtime, battery voltage, alarm setting, and speed and altitude if a GPS is used. Pressing this key again will return tothe main screen.

USING THE IR REMOTE:An IR remote is needed to access the menu system. Beginning with v2.0 of the software, the kit includes a mini IR remote that uses the NECprotocol. The remote supplied is “ready to go” without the need to pair the remote with the Geiger kit.

Function of Keys on the RemoteThe functions for the various keys on the remote are as follows:

Enters menu system. The current selection is highlighted and the selections before and after are shown. Pressingthe Menu key while in the menus exits them.

Moves down to the next menu option, or up to the previous menu option.

>> Increments the value already set for the current option or toggle the option.<< Decrements the value already set for the current option or toggle the option.

(Enter) Finalizes the entry in the current menu option.

Digits 0-9 – For direct entry of values (instead of arrows) – must use > after using digits.

Enters a decimal point when setting CPM->(unit). If C is used when out of the menu - it will clear the graph data ifon the main screen and clear the scaler counts if in the scaler screen.

(Mute) Silence the speaker - used when out of the menu.

(Select) Switches between the main screen and scaler screen - used when out of the menu.

Switches between the main screen and the “Info” screen - used when out of the menu.

Any other key – if in the menu system – the key code for unknown keys will display.

MENU OPTIONS:Initially, the menu options are set to defaults. Settings made will be stored in EEPROM on the ATmega1284, so they will be in effect when youpower back on. Pressing and holding the Select button at power on until the screen fades to black and starts up will reset all menu settings backto their default settings. Here’s a brief description of each menu option:

DISP PERIOD (MS) Interval between screen refreshes on the main screen, in milliseconds. Display counts are based on a running average.Settings of less than 5 seconds have not been tested. (5 seconds is a good setting) Default = 5000 mS

SD CARD LOG PERIOD Interval between writes to the log file on the SD card. Zero means SD logging is turned off. A file will not be created atstartup. Default = 1 minute

SERIAL LOG PERIOD Interval between writes to the serial port. Zero means serial logging is turned off. Default = 1 minute

CPM (unit) Conversion ratio from CPM to the selected dose unit. Set the ratio for the type of GM tube used. Note this ratio will depend on thedose unit being displayed - see DOSE UNIT. Note that 2 ratios can be stored. The second ratio can be selected by the DIP switch on the DisplayAdapter (or ground I/O pin 22). Depending on the position of the switch this menu option will set the value for either the 1st or 2nd ratio. 175 is thecommon default for the SBM-20 and 100 for the LDN 712. The decimal point or TV/VCR key on the remote can be used to enter a decimal point.Default = 175.43 CPM and 100 CPM to dose unit (uSv)

BACKGROUND CPM Normal background CPM for this tube and location. The background rate you enter is used if the DOSE UNIT is set to xBg.The background dose unit is how many times the current CPM is above or the background CPM you set here. So for example, if this is set to 30, at45 CPM, xBg will be 1.5. This value may also be used as a base for the graph if GRAPH SCALE MODE is set to Background. Default = 44 CPM

ALARM THRESHOLD Threshold above which the alarm is triggered. This can be either in CPM or thedose unit selected – see ALARM UNIT. Zero means the alarm is turned off. Unlike using the Selectbutton, any value may be entered. The alarm will stop when activity drops back under the alarmthreshold. You can also silence the alarm for 30 seconds by pressing the Select button when the alarm issounding. Default = 500 CPM

DOSE UNIT Unit for dose display. Choose between uSv/h, uR/h, mR/h or xBg as the dose unit that willbe displayed and logged. This will start a new SD log file. Default = uSv/h

ALARM UNIT Use dose unit for alarm setting. Typically the ALARM THRESHOLD is based on CPM,but you can base it on your selected dose rate by using this option. Default = CPM

SCALER PERIOD (MIN) Length of time, in minutes, for the scaler. If scaler period set to Infinite, theaccumulated dose rate is displayed on the scaler screen. Default = 10 minutes

BARGRAPH MAX CPM Full scale reading on rapid response bargraph. Also used for tone mode. Thisoption sets the sensitivity of the horizontal bargraph. It is also used by the GRAPH SCALE MODE if set to“Bargraph”. Also see the Tone Mode section for how this option affects tone mode. Default = 1000 CPM

SERIAL OUTPUT MODE Serial output in Default, Radlogger, GK-B5 format, or GPS NMEA output.Default sends all fields, Radlogger only sends CPM, GK-B5 only sends CPM, Dose, and Vcc. UseRadlogger with that app. Use GK-B5 if GKnet board is attached. See Logging section. GPS NMEAoutputs the NMEA sentences from your GPS. Useful for interfacing to mapping applications. (A GPSMODULE must be selected and connected.) Default = OFF

TONE SENSITIVITY Controls how quickly tone increases in pitch for an increase in CPM. See the ToneMode section below for details. Default = 4

GRAPH SCALE MODE Auto-scaling can be done based on the peak or average value. The two “Auto”modes mean that the entire graph will adjust based on the peak or average reading that is presentanywhere on the displayed graph. The graph is continuously updating its range, so it may become moreor less sensitive based on all values stored for its display. Default = Auto: PeakAuto: Peak - The graph auto scales based on the highest peak currently displayed on the graph.Auto: Avg - The graph auto scales based on the average of all values currently displayed on the graph. Bargraph - The graph is based on the setting made in BARGRAPH MAX CPM.Background - The graph is based on 3X the setting made in BACKGROUND CPM.

TIME SETTINGS Press enter to open the time settings menu. If you are using a GPS, the time and datewill be set when you get a fix. Otherwise, you need to set the date and time. The date-time is backed upby the coin cell battery.GMT OFFSET - Time offset from GMT. Press enter to toggle +/-. When using the GPS, you need to setyour time zone because the GPS provides time in UTC format. Default = -5AUTO DST - Automatically adjust for daylight savings time (US rules). Default = OffTIME FORMAT - Select the time display format. Choice affects data written to the SD card and output toserial. Default = 24:MM:SSDATE FORMAT - Select the date display format. Choice affects data written to the SD card and outputto serial. Default = MM:DD:YYDAY - Day of the month. (1-31)MONTH - Month (1-12)”YEAR (YY) - Two-digit year (00-99)HOURS (24) - Hour in 24-hour format (0-23)MINUTES + SET - Minute (0-59) Press enter to update clock. (The clock is not updated until Enter ispushed here.) MAIN MENU - Return to the main menu.

BRIGHTNESS - Adjust the backlight brightness. Note that high brightness uses much more power (see chart in theBuild Instructions.) Default = 7 bars (7/8th)

UNITS - Choose metric or Imperial units. Choice affects data written to the SD card and output toserial. (GPS feet / meters, mph / km/h, etc) This will start a new SD log file. Default = Metric

GPS MODULE - Choose a GPS module. Switching between any GPS and no GPS will start a new SDlog file. This unit is equipped with an internal (Ublox NEO-6M) With its separate power switch flippedup/on, it will automatically boot up when you power up your meter. When you see the Velocity andAltitude on the lower left side of the display, you are synced with the nearest satellite. And now I haveadded a green LED on the lower right side of the unit and will blink every second with satellite sync.Default = None

The GPS offers this type of information to your system. When turned off, this information goes away.• Latitude, longitude, altitude and speed will be added to SD log file and the serial output.• The Status bar will display altitude and speed• The exact time from the GPS will be used to set the clock automatically

SCREEN ORIENTATION - Select the screen orientation. Press enter to save.You can orientate thescreen 4 ways - portrait or landscape. This may be useful if you want to locate the SD card in a differentdirection. Default = landscape (no rotation)

DISPLAY SCHEME - Select a display scheme. You can select one of three preset display color schemes for the main display.

REG. VOLTAGE - This is the actual supply voltage for the CPU. Voltage is now displayed real time. Note that each menu setting has a minimumand a maximum setting. Entries that are out of bounds will revert to the minimum or maximum.

ABOUT DOSE UNITS:The menu allows you select the name of the dose unit that appears on the display. However, to be clear, there is no built in conversion

between them. Instead the CPM->[DOSE] RATIO is adjusted depending on the name of the DOSE UNIT selected. For example, 175.43 is thedefault set for the SBM-20 with uSv as the dose unit. Suppose you pick “mR” as the dose unit name, and want to measure in milirems. (“mR”more correctly abbreviates as milliroentgens but is used to save display space.) The rem is defined as .01 seivert. Therefore, to use the sameratio that was designed for the tube, you would multiply that ratio by 10. You would enter a CPM->[DOSE] RATIO as 175.43 x 10 or 1754.3.Likewise if you wanted microrems (“uR”) you would divide the ratio by 10 and enter 17.54.

If you do want to use roentgens (exposure- used in older instruments) a source states that they are .96 rem in soft tissue. So the CPM->(unit) for actual mR would be 175.43 x 10 x .96 or 1684.1. (for uR it would be 16.84)

TONE MODEInstead of the usual 'clicks', tone mode produces tones that vary in frequency with the current activity - much like a metal detector. There is alsoan associated NULL button (located below the SD card slot) that resets the scale to the current activity. Tone mode is very responsive to changesin activity, and the change in pitch is much more noticeable than a change in the rate of clicks. It was primarily designed for field surveying.

The sensitivity of the tone mode is set either by the TONE SENSITIVITY menu option or by adding a tone adjustment pot. See the wiring diagramin the Build Instructions for how to connect the pot. When using the pot you must set the TONE SENSITIVITY menu option to Pot. The displaywill show you the sensitivity the pot is set at in real time.

Sensitivity refers to the 'bandwidth' of the tone. When set to low numbers, say 4 (the default) only a small increase in activity is needed to producehigher tones. When dealing with more sensitive GM tubes, decrease the sensitivity by using a value of say 8 or 10. Experiment with values thatsuit your ear.

The BARGRAPH MAX CPM menu setting also affects tone mode by defining the CPM that will produce the highest frequency of tone. Normallythis is set to highest CPM for situation and tube being used.

In order to get the best spectrum of tones, tone mode is based on a logarithmic progression rather than a linear one. This fits with the fact thatradiation intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source.

The “null button” resets the range of tones so that the low notes are set back to the current activity. This is a useful feature when switching from alow to a high background for instance. The null button removes the higher background so increased activity may be more easily discerned.

SETTING UP TONE MODE1. Set the proper conversion ratio for your tube. With the proper ratio set, the null point will automatically be set when the counter is powered onso normal background radiation is ignored.

2. Place a sample of the mineral or other radioactive item you are trying to detect approximately one inch from the detector. Note the CPMreading after it has stabilized.

3. In the menu, set the BARGRAPH MAX CPM to the CPM value you noted in step 2. 4. Adjust the tone sensitivity setting to suit your preferences. For most mildly radioactive items (such as red Fiestaware), sensitivity settings from1-5 work well. The ideal value varies depending on the activity level of the target object, the tube, and the distance. Lower settings cause thetone to increase in frequency faster in response to smaller changes in the count rate. Higher settings cause the frequency to increase muchmore slowly for changes in count rate. When the sensitivity setting is 0, the frequency will jump very rapidly from the lowest frequency to thehighest one. This setting is useful to quickly scan an area to determine if there are hot spots. You will likely want to change the setting to ahigher number to help locate the hot spot.

LOGGINGLogging is provided in two forms - logging to the SD card and serial output. In the default mode, both forms have the same data output, and bothforms use comma separated values with the Date and Time fields as quoted strings. For example:

Serial output is through the built in USB FTDI connector at 9600 baud, N,8,1

Each time the kit is started a new log file is created on the SD card with the filename GKLOGnnn.CSV where nnn is a 3 digit sequence numberbeginning with 000. Therefore, 1000 log files can be created before the card must be cleared. Note however, that the more log files there are onthe card, the longer it takes at startup to create a new file, so it’s best to move old files off the card.

The first line of the file or serial output is a header line which names all the fields below. The fields output depends on some of the menu settingsbeing used. Note that the header is now compatible with www.gpsvisualizer.com an on-line mapping site.

If a GPS is not being used, the following fields are logged:

Note that second line in each example has been manually logged using the Log button which puts ** in the last field.

Menu options such as Unit (metric / imperial), and date and time formats adjust the header and data accordingly.

There are exceptions to the above depending on the setting of the SERIAL OUTPUT MODE menu setting:• When Radlogger is set, for the serial output only, no header is created, and only CPM is output. This setting is used when connecting theserial output to the Radiation Logger application.

• When GK-B5 is set, for the serial output only, no header is created and only CPM, Dose, and Vcc is output. This setting emulates the GK-B5 version of the Geiger Kit. It’s used when the GKnet board is attached to the Plus to send the serial data over the internet to monitoringsites. This allows for the same software to be used on the GKnet board for either the GK-B5 kit or the Plus kit.

• When GPS NMEA is set, for the serial output only, the NMEA sentences from your GPS are output to serial. (A GPS module type must beselected and connected.) The interface to the GPS is two way, meaning that you can send commands to the GPS. This setting is useful forinterfacing to mapping applications as well as debugging.

ARDUINO Software and Serial-USB connection information:ON the cd you will find the FTDI driver and Arduino program version 1. Install both and restart your mac. Copy the Geiger Sketch folder to thesame folder as your Arduino program is and remember where that is as that will be where you go to save your sketch everytime you make achange to it. There will also be a Library folder that will also need to be in the same folder. Just remember that the folder has to be the same exactname as the sketch name is. And also within Arduino, you will have to go to preferences and show Arduino where your default sketch folder is.Also, for the GKplus series devices, you must chose Mighty 1284p as the device Board, and figure out which serial port you need to connect to.

ARDUINO SETTINGS: Brohogan Software 1. Open Arduino2. Open the saved sketch .ino file, connect your Geiger counter to the USB with power switch off.3. Verify the file by clicking the little check mark icon.4. Click TOOLS, and Select Board type as Arduino UNO, and select serial port as the top tty choice.5. Click Serial Monitor (top right looking glass icon). Set Baud rate to 9600 and you should see the CPM, uSv and geiger counter voltage datacoming up once per minute.For more info go to website under Software section on the DIY geiger counter website.
