Patient Guidance Program:

Guru Ram Das Hospital (SGRD), Amritsar,

1

Our pilot Patient Guidance Program at Tata Memorial Hospital (Mumbai) made such a tremendous impact that in December 2014, the Foundation eagerly launched a new Patient Guidance Program at the Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital (SGRD) in Amritsar, Punjab. We are working in the departments that need the most support including the Help Desk and Chemo Ward. At the Help Desk, our staff compassionately guides patients regarding procedures and financials. In the Chemo Ward, where many patients are

2

combatting the after-effects of chemotherapy, our staff is able to work one-on-one with patients regarding proper nutritional practices and effective coping strategies. Our support allows more patients to focus on their healing instead of the financial, emotional, and physical stressors of cancer; this type of supportive care has been correlated to increased patient survivorship and wellness.

Malnourishment Program, Chembur

“According to the

World Bank, more

than

75% of India’s

preschool children

suffer

from iron deficiency,

&

57% of preschool

children have

sub-clinical Vitamin A

deficiency”

(WHO, 2016)

With the intent to impact the health of pregnant and lactating women, and their newborns, we launched a Malnourishment Program in collaboration with the Central Government’s Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS Project). The Malnourishment Program provides pregnant and lactating women with resources that include educational information, testing, medicine, nutrition, and diet alternatives. The Foundation conducted sessions on ‘Specific Care and Nutrition During Pregnancy’ and ‘Fetus Growth During Pregnancy’. This year we have focused on two areas in Mumbai: Dharavi and Chembur. In Dharavi, our target-population was 30 women and in Chembur the target population was 50 families. We were able to reach 193 women through this initiative.

Cancer Detection Camps

The Indian Cancer Congress reports that in India, close to 70% of cancer patients find out that they have cancer after it has crossed to Stage III (2013). Getting screened in the last stages of cancer means it is often too late for any kind of treatment. In order to address this problem, the Gunvati J. Kapoor Foundation collaborated with the Indian Cancer Society to bring a mobile cancer detection bus to Dharavi and Chembur, Mumbai. Mammograms, Ear, Nose and Throat Tests, and Pap Smears were carried out in a mobile lab provided by the Indian Cancer Society.

Number of Women Screened: 120

Cancer Awareness Talks

This year, we conducted four ‘Cancer Awareness Talks’ in collaboration with ‘Sant Nirankari Mission,’‘Khidmate Hind Trust’ and ‘Children of the World Trust’ in the Airoli, Andheri Khandivali, and Chembur areas. ‘We focus on the importance of early detection and prevention for breast and cervical cancer. Attendees learned how to perform monthly self-breast exams, and the presenters answered questions that unmasked many common myths about cancer. These talks are especially important because they allow attendees to spread the word about cancer prevention and early detection.

The Savalambhan Program aimed to make women self-reliant, which is the translation of Savalambhan. Women living in Dharavi were participants in this project, and our Institute of Chemical Technology Scholarship recipients have assisted in conducting the sessions. Many of these women wanted to comprehend and be able to contribute to economic decisions regarding their family’s finances, but did not possess the education to do so. This program aimed to help these women thrive. The objectives of this program were to: • To build literacy (reading, writing, and

arithmetic)

2

• To create self-awareness, and confidence amongst the participants

• To create social awareness about social issues and problems amongst the participants and build their reasoning, thinking, and analytical capacities.

• To enable the participants to make independent decisions.

These women participated in focused group discussions where self-employment options, government schemes, and health discussions were elucidated. A total of 165 sessions were conducted over a period of one year.

Under the ‘Khalsa Fellowship Program’ until 2013, the students were placed in NGOs in Mumbai for a six-week internship. The Foundation realized that though the students worked with utmost sincerity, there were opportunities for growth with regards to developing skills that would aid them in forging ahead professionally. With the aim to further student’s leadership and communication skills, and nudge them towards proficiency, we partnered with PUKAR and launched the ‘Youth Leaders as Change Makers’ program. The Fellowship program runs for 11 months with Fellows partaking in workshops, which are aimed at the development of their skills,

2

while sensitizing the students on relevant issues affecting their communities. They learn to conduct community based participatory action research. Various workshops on self-transformation, Knowledge Production/Research and active citizenship skills were conducted by a team of experts and resource persons, which helped to build capacities of the fellows in various areas. This year, 19 students were selected, and the students were divided into 3 groups who were then trained to do research on the subject of their choice.
