ST. PAUL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH MANY CULTURES, MANY COUNTRIES, MANY LANGUAGES IN ONE BODY: ST. PAUL’S FAMILY

TODAY’S GOSPEL Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.

STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE

“I will be their God and they shall be my people.”- Jeremiah 31:33

What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us.

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would

aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

According to John, those following Jesus included both Jews and Greeks, that is, “the entire world.” Therefore, the passage begins announcing that some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast had asked to see Jesus. Perhaps they were Greek-speaking Jews, or Greeks who were interested in Judaism. In any case, it makes sense for John to use the Greeks to indicate that Jesus’ mission extended beyond the Jews to the Gentile world. The “hour” refers to the moment when God will manifest his presence in Jesus. This presence is nowhere more evident than in Jesus’ act of self-sacrificing love,

Jesus’ mission extended beyond the Jews to the Gentile world. The “hour” refers to the moment when God will manifest his presence in Jesus. This presence is nowhere more evident than in Jesus’ act of self-sacrificing love, for that is the reflection of God’s love for all. But this glory entails death, like the grain of wheat which needs to fall into the ground and die in order to produce much fruit. Jesus’ being raised on a cross and his burial are also his glorification. The world’s prince of darkness will be driven out by the light that is Jesus. Jesus indicated that only after the crucifixion could the gospel be available to both Jews and Gentiles. For Reflection: In what new way have I experienced God’s guidance this Lent?

HER ESSENTIAL WISDOM—A CALL TO

SERVE

“And today, it is the same Christ, the same Jesus, the same today in our poor people, who are unwanted, unemployed, uncared for, hungry and naked and homeless. They are useless to the state or to socitety, and nobody has time for them. And it is you and I as Christians who, worthy of that love of Christ, if our love is true, must find them. We must help them, they are there for the finding.”—Mother Teresa’s words.

state or to socitety, and nobody has time for them. And it is you and I as Christians who, worthy of that love of Christ, if our love is true, must find them. We must help them, they are there for the finding.”—Mother Teresa’s words.

LENTEN PRAYER Loving God, your son, Jesus was humble and

obedient. He fulfilled your will by becoming human

and suffering with us. I ask you for the desire to

become more humble so that my own life might also

bear witness to you. I want to use the small

sufferings I have in this world to give you glory.

Please, Lord, guide my mind with your truth.

Strengthen my life by the example of Jesus. Help me

to be with Jesus in this week as he demonstrates

again his total love for me. He died so that I would

no longer be separated from you. Help me to feel

how close you are and to live in union with you. I

ask this, through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.

Give up harsh words. Use generous ones. Give up unhappiness. Take up gratitude. Give up anger. Take up gentleness and patience. Give up pessimism. Take up hope and optimism. Give up worrying. Take up trust in God. Give up complaining. Value what you have. Give up stress. Take up prayer. Give up judging others. Discover Jesus within them. Give up sorrow and bitterness. Fill your heart with joy. Give up selfishness. Take up compassion for others. Give up being unforgiving. Learn reconciliation. Give up words. Fill yourself with silence, and listen to others.

Ayuno, oración y sacrificio camino para experimentar la gracia y el perdón del Señor.
