•  Know yourself •  Be yourself •  Find out what works best for you •  Find out what doesn’t work for you •  Don’t imitate others

– Develop your own style •  Applies to STYLE and CONTENT

Third Rule of Engagement: Passion

•  Have some •  Care about what you speak of •  You all picked a specialty in medicine •  Draws people in and makes them naturally

Fourth Rule of Engagement: CONTROL your anxiety…

•  How do you do that?

•  Three ways…

Practice •  Again and again... •  Rehearse with a friend/Spouse •  Be familiar with equipment •  Control for length •  Blackberry or iPhone if no one loves you •  Work to control filler words

–  Get others to help and be honest •  Just like a procedure in the ICU

FOCUS on CONTENT •  Put effort into your content

–  It will save you •  Focus on contents of your message to

group •  Know your material •  While you speak focus more on what you

are saying and not as much on people’s reaction

Pick a person •  Speak to certain individuals in the crowd

•  Lessens anxiety

•  Makes speech more conversational and natural

•  Speak to 6 and you have spoken to 100

– Not an IMPOSTER – There is reason why you are there

•  People are always pre-occupied with themselves so therefore are not as judgmental as you think

Fifth Rule of Engagement: Have some STYLE in your

communication

Non-verbal Style in Communicating Effectively

•  Eye contact (engaging) •  Vary your tone and pace (humans tune out

to same sound) •  Appearance •  Posture •  Facial Expression •  Gestures •  Movement: “work the room”

•  Start active and assertive and maintain it

•  Don’t be passive and bored

•  Never Never Never read your speech word for word – Will always fall flat and fail b/c you eliminate

the natural conversational element

Verbal Style in Communicating Effectively

•  Content and style can be interwoven •  Humor

– Tell jokes about yourself •  Personal Stories

– Not other’s •  Anecdotes •  Metaphors •  Helps audience relate to you as a real person

Sixth and Final Rule of Engagement: Make the Audience your Ally & Friend

•  Get to know your friend before and during – Create an adaptive plan based on this

• Content and Structure •  Formality of style •  Adapt to the situation (like patients)

•  Involve your ally in the presentation – Allow them to engage you – Get them to identify with you and your message – Always have time for ANY questions

Power Point •  Less is More •  Use it to anchor your talk •  Use it to enhance your talk •  Font 24 or greater •  It is a cue, never read it •  Show data •  It can detract from your presentation

Extra Tips: •  Know the room •  Arrive early •  Test the A-V equipment before •  Have back-up memory for slides •  Relax •  Visualize yourself giving the speech •  Realize that people want you to succeed •  Don’t apologize: go with the flow
