ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear families,
Dyslexia Month
The month of October is Dyslexia Month. Please refer to the graphic on page 2 of this newsletter
for some interesting facts on dyslexia.
Regional Athletics Congratulations to the students who participated in the Regional Athletics last week. There were many personal best results and students represented Gisborne PS to a very high standard, displaying outstanding sportsmanship. Well done, we are proud of your efforts.
Planning 2018 We have started planning for 2018 and have appointed Michael Goodyear to the position of PE teacher for next year. Michael is an experienced PE teacher who is currently working at New Gisborne PS and has done so for a number of years. He is very excited about joining the staff at Gisborne PS and working with parents and students. We would like to acknowledge the outstanding job Jake McIntyre has done in the PE role this semester and are very excited to say that Jake will be staying with us to take up a classroom teacher role in 2018.
Oval Roster Due to cricket season starting, we have received requests from students to alter our oval roster to incorporate the cricket nets. Our oval roster has been in place for several years to ensure all students have a turn on the oval without the frustrations and safety issues that result from overcrowding. Unfortunately, the oval does not cater for 470 students at once and to help prevent injuries, it is necessary to have a roster. Also, to help relieve the congested yard, we have added indoor lunchtime activities to the roster. This will assist in safe play and extra space in the yard for all students.
Uniform Policy At our recent Education Sub-committee and School Council meeting, we amended and updated the Uniform Policy. Please find it attached to this week’s newsletter. A reminder that hair ribbons and bows need to be in line with the school colours of white, blue or black and subtle in appearance. Hair needs to be tied back and simple studs or sleepers are acceptable as earrings. Thank you for your cooperation.
World Teachers’ Day Friday October 27th is World Teachers’ day. I would like to acknowledge and say thank you to the
amazing staff we have at Gisborne Primary School. Our staff are very committed and work extra
hard to educate the students in their care and at making a difference in their lives.
Pre-Prep Transition Our Pre-Prep Transition program commences tomorrow. We will be holding two sessions, with Session 1 held from 9:10am—9:55am and Session 2 from 10:10am—10:55am. (Please check your transition letter or contact the school office if you are unsure which session you were allocated). Parent information sessions will also be held tomorrow in the staff room during these times. We look forward to meeting our 2018 prep students and families!
Regards,
Lisa Maxwell—Acting Principal

On Monday the 23rd of October, students in grades 5 & 6 had Alice from CERES come in and teach us about composting. She took us into the garden to look for worms and insects that she called level 2 decomposers because they broke down the food scraps. She also taught us that worm urine was good fertiliser when mixed with water. Kade A—5B

WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH We are nearly at the end of Week 3 for Walk to School month! Did you know that so far we have had 3,450 walking, riding and scooting trips to and from school! That is a great effort and with just over 1 week left of Walk to School month, see how many times your child can walk, ride or scoot to school.
Growing bodies need plenty of exercise to feel strong and energised, and to build themselves up for a healthy future. Children who learn to love being active are developing positive habits that will help them to stay fit and healthy later in life. So how much activity should they be doing? The Australian Physical Activity Guidelines suggest children and teenagers aged 5-17 should get moving for at least 60 minutes each day. However, recent reports show that just 20% of young Australians are meeting this recommendation.
One simple, fun and free way to help your child boost their activity levels is to encourage them to walk to school. Regular walking is great for maintaining a healthy weight, building strong bones and muscles, and improving balance and coordination. Plus, walking to school can help kids to develop their social skills and knowledge of road safety, as well as improving their sense of control, independence and confidence in making their way around their world.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY
TOMORROW we will be celebrating World Teachers’ Day Friday 27th October
to thank our teachers for the wonderful job they do. We invite students to write a card, letter, or poem; draw a picture;
bring flowers from the garden; bake something special; or just say
thank you to their teacher for all the hard work they do.
Any parents who would like to drop off a little something for our teachers for morning tea can
leave it at the office. Thank you.
Shopping Tour payments are due tomorrow!!
Payments can be made via the Qkr App or at the school office.
Please note that Qkr requires you to choose a student before making payment but this is just to enable the PFA to
identify which family has made the payment. You can make payments for multiple people once a student profile
has been selected. Please contact the office should you have any queries.
